    ‪@CivilTutorHindi‬
    Whenever we need to construct a residential structure, the main things we need to focus on are the depth of the foundation and the size of the columns. If we don’t excavate the foundation to a sufficient depth or if we don’t provide the adequate size of the columns required for a particular number of stories, the structure would be prone to failure. Hence it becomes necessary to decide the size of columns as per the number of floors to be constructed in a building structure.
    The column is an important component of a building structure. The main function of it is to transfer the loads from the superstructure to the foundation.
    As per IS 13920, the Width (W) to Depth (D) ratio of a column should be greater than or equal to 0.4 and the minimum dimension of the member shall not be less than 200 mm. However, in frames that have beams with a Centre-to-Centre span exceeding 5 m or columns of unsupported length exceeding 4 m, the shortest dimension of the column shall not be less than 300 mm.
    The size of a column depends on its ultimate axial load-carrying capacity and the grades of concrete & steel used to cast the element.
    Before proceeding further, we must know what is Area of steel, the Area of concrete &, What is Gross area?
    By the term Area of steel, we mean the total area of cross-section of all the steel bars provided in a section.
    For illustration, if we have a column of size 230mm x 230mm provided with 4 number of 10mm steel bars, the area of steel for this column will be equal to 4 times the area of the cross-section of each bar or simply 4(π/4)D2. The Gross area is the total area of this section including the area of steel & the Area of concrete is the area of this section excluding the area of steel.

    Pu=0.40fck Ac+0.67 fyAsc For M20 and fy415 steel assuming 1% steel
    Pu=0.40 x20 (0.99 Ag) +0.67x415 x0.01Ag
    Pu=7.92Ag+2.7805 Ag =10.70 Ag.
    In this Pu=950 x10^3 =10.70 Ag
    Ag=950x10^3/10.70=88785.04673 mm^2
    Assuming square section side of column=297.97mm say 300mm
    We can Tabulate the various percentage of steel for M20 concrete and fy 415 steel
    pt=0.80% Pu=8.16
    1.0% Pu=10.70
    1.50% Pu=12.05
    2.0% Pu=13.40
    2.50% Pu=14.75
    3.0% Pu=16.10
    For economical max percentage of steel may be 2.50% may be adopted. This is for simplication.

    Sir, Please how did you come up with the "88785mm sq as the result?" Because the I add up (0.4x20x0.99+0.67x415x0.01) = 10.7005. thank you

    Sir, how we can decide the shape of the column in a location? I mean what are the factors that affect the decision of shaping a column whether square or circular?

    • @CivilTutor
      @CivilTutor  Před 2 lety +4

      For residential buildings where you need to do the brickwork between the columns its better to have a square or a rectangular section. If there are no walls then we can go for circular sections because they offer higher resistance to buckling than square or rectangular sections.

    sir my doubt is about column stirrup.
    recently I changed my massion bcoz of his poor knowledge work. my new massion suggested me to extend the stirrups bcoz of large column size actually my column size is 15×9 inch but stirrup dimesnion is 9×6 he suggest me to extend it to 12×6 but the problem here is to change all stirrups for total of 9columns . what will I do now. can I continue with old dimensions or to follow my new massion rules.
