    First of all Becky, you look fantastic. I'm 58 and have been up and down in weight through out my life. I've used food for comfort and filling boredom. I'm now at 275 lbs and feel awful, tired, knees bother me, my back, feet. I'm ready to let it go and going to listen to your videos for help. Thank you

      Hi! At first I thought I had written what you are saying and then I looked at the name!! lol I was up around 225 for years!!! Lose a few gain it right back, lose my mojo and start again. I believe that after listening to helpful people like Dr. Becky and a lot of love and encouragement from my husband I am now at a place where I'm not in fear of not being able to control myself. I make sure I walk everyday (weather depending) and we walk on the weekends. Every morning at 4:30am, we practice our yoga for 20-25 minutes and start our day. I also do it on the weekends, once I cool down from the walks. This past Sunday, I weighed myself and I'm at 184 and my goal is to reach 140 by July 2020. One day at a time, one minute at a time if necessary. You have people who want to see you succeed, I'm one of them!!! Reach out if you want to chat! oxx

    So glad you are talking about this. I am 54 and very petite. Menopause has kicked my butt in terms of weight/health issues, energy, sleep and wrinkles to name a few. But I like that you said over 50 and needing to enjoy life. You will agree everyone is unique and each person should be experimenting with food to see what works. I exercise 25-35 min, never drink pop, or eat twinkies, I cook home made. What I eat is a constant challenge because I am a foodie and love creamy sauces and such. Never ending battle even though I do not crave pop or muffins, or candy. I do still crave chips & popcorn. But I live to fight another day! Thanks for your channel.

    Some people have died from these crazy diets and I made sure I stayed away from them. Unfortunately for me I have fibromyalgia and arthritis, and it's very difficult to exercise, and the medication I'm on contributes to weight gain. My genetic background with weight isn't good, especially on my father's side. I got tired of trying because it was too much work. But in order to go forward, we have to accept ourselves for the way we are first before we can make any improvements.

    I am 57 and I have been with Crossfit for 1 year and have lost about 10-12 lbs. I saw my weight going up and up. You are right in the first months of CF I was actually gaining and losing back and forth. I have Hypothyroidism and that makes it even harder to lose weight. I have gave up Sugar and Soda in the last few months. Also interestingly enough I am very low carb too which was not on purpose. But staying away from foods that are in the center of the Supermarket. However I have found one downfall the social area of my life has taken a hit. The going to breakfast with my friends, going to fast food with my co-workers and social events seem to center around food. Those moments have been difficult but the rewards are worth it.

    Hi Becky, I have a correction to make. Recently at my PC doctor physical I reviewed my chart. In sept 2016 I was actually 327 pounds, not 317. I was fatter than I thought. The great news is that since sept 2016 (16 months ago) I am down to 229 lbs. I have lost 98 pounds and have been keeping it off. My wife weighs 108 pounds, I lost almost her entire body weight. I would still like to shed a few more pounds but I can't complain. Good luck to all my brothers and sisters in the weight loss fight.

    Hello folks, I celebrate Christmas and for those of you that do I wish you all a very happy Christmas. Just an update on my progress since my last comment on 12-9-16. I weigh myself once a week, Friday mornings. Again, I don't get excessive with the weighing thing. Today, 12-23-2016 I weighed in at 268 lbs. That is a loss of 39 lbs since Sept. 29th. I know some will say so what, you're still overweight. You'd be correct. But I am DOING something about it. If you are reading this you probably have a weight issue. Whatever works for you please stick with it and keep trying. Go ahead and enjoy the holidays, I am. It is ok to take a break.

    I just want to say that in Dec. 2014 I was hit by a car while walking in a crosswalk. Long story short, I can't exercise other than walking. I had ballooned (no pun intended) to 307 lbs. After a good scolding from my PC doctor on 9-29-2016 I decided to make some changes. I cut out ALL bread, soda, coldcuts, snacks (except pretzels) and cut back on cheese and wine (that was hard). Now remember I said NO exercising. I eat Instant oatmeal with a hershey Kiss and some chopped nuts for breakfast. For lunch I have salad with hard boiled egg and cheese and baco's (yum) and top with dressing (no fat free, fuck that shit). Supper is whatever I want. NO dessert. Well as of 12-9-2016 I'm down to 274 lbs. That is I believe 33 lbs lost. I'm averaging two pounds a week. I ain't done yet. I'd like to be 180 lbs again but we'll see.
    My point is you don't need special foods or $5,000 equipment. Or to starve yourself. I do drink wine on Sat./Sun. just not Mon.-Fri. I don't feel hungry. What we ALL need to lose weight is the POWER in us. My wife is 108 lbs. and we have cookies, ice cream, potato chips and all kinds of goodies. I just don't eat them. Self control is the only MAGIC you need. All of us have the power. Good luck and Happy Holidays.

      Food addicts in Recovery Annonomous is a free 12 step program that helps a lot of people. They are set up like AA. They give you the food plan, a sponsor and don't eat flour or sugar and weigh weigh and measure food because portion size is critical they belive. I lost about 30 pounds in 90 days. I went from a size 12 to a size 3 -4 in 90 days. They help you keep it off too. And as you loose weight they actually add food. The meetings are very motivating if you can get past the opening mantra that explains the program each time. Its important to find a sponser thats a good fit for you. If you are a food addict, it would be good for you if you are not..you don't need it.

My head is clear; I am no longer panting when I walk; my head is clear; and after the first day it was not that difficult. Becky, thank you for your very well presented and helpful clear videos. I recently got to a point where virtually NONE of my clothes fit me, due to an alarmingly expanding waist-line. And staying in a robe all day makes me feel like a slob. Cannot afford to buy whole new wardrobe...decided to try 16/8 IF eating style, & cutting way down on yummy carbs. The big problem is I eat out of boredom & because I just love food, esp. carbs like bread & pizza. Because I retired & have fewer distractions & am sedentary, I tend to 'graze' all day & pine for foods high in fat & carbs. I open my fridge & cupboards constantly looking for things I do not really need. Most people who vlog about weight-loss are still working, & have many distractions & less easy access to food. What do I do? It is hard to find distractions, & eating out of boredom is deadly. I have a serious vision problem that prevents me from driving, so can't get out much. Help. How do I deal with the urge to 'graze'? I had few problems when younger, was actually severely underweight until 35 & went thru surgical menopause....yikes. all is abdominal, breast & facial fat.

      Hi Karen, foods that contain a mix of carbs (sugar), fat, and salt are addictive, so they will continue to call to you until you successfully break free from them. To do that, you need to focus on feeding your body healthy nutrient-dense foods. I have a lot of videos that talk about this, you might want to start with this one: Always Eating, but Always Hungry czcams.com/video/Ug1JVRt7z0E/video.html

    • @karenkaneshiro9861
      @karenkaneshiro9861 Před 6 lety +1

      Thank-you Becky. I watched the video you recommended. I had not thought of COMBINING fibre & fat together at same time; ...often eat something EITHER high fat OR high fiber, but new see the benefit of combining. (pizza still issues it's siren call to me, however!)
      By the way, I noticed so many people talk about body "set point/thermostat control' theories as being NEW...however when I took my university nutrition classes back in the early 80's, this was one of the theories we were studying when touching on weight-control issues. I am sure our campus was not alone in teaching this, so am surprised that so many think it is new!
      again, thanks!

    In my late twenties, I gained about 20 lbs and was never able to lose it. Suddenly in my fifties, though I was eating 600 calories more, my weight plummeted 20 lbs. The difference was that I intensified my work out, doing each work out activity till I couldn't do one more rep. In my twenties I did two sets of 25 to 37 pushups and abs and butt exercises and a 45 minute slow burn cardio session. In my fifties I do 220 burpies, three sets of 56 pushups, abs and butt exercises. In my twenties I ate 1 meal per day, of about 800 calories, but in my 50s I ate 1350 - 1450 calories per day to maintain the same weight of 110lbs. In my fifties, both the weight loss and maintenance was achieved with a diet of huge salads with dips and a tsp of olive or sesame oil (grocery store dips instead of salad dressing which are much lower in calorie, that is 25 calories per tablespoon as opposed to 80 calories), or a huge soup with a tsp spoon of oil for flavour, veggies and soup base, which add up to 220 calories and some protein with the soup or salad. Breakfast would be any combo of fruit, yogourt, oats and nut butter, coconut oil or coconut milk. I ate breakfast about 10 am and after work, I finished my last and 2nd meal by 1:30am, snacking on raw veggies and a bit of fruit or seaweed during work so I could save calories for dinner. Then I cut out all forms of sugar and sugary fruits. And I started to feel "dead" at work. Then I tried intermittent fasting, which I couldn't time the meals around my work out, nor my after-work meal. Then I started to binge. And I gained the 20 lbs back after over three years of keeping it off. I am convinced that low carb is no good for women or no good for women who exercise. And the 8 hour time slot means that I have to eat at work where I can't relax. But fasting all day till I get home, especially after my morning work out, makes me feel dead (and I'm too tired after work to work out). I started to feel deprived and hungry all the time. And as you say, willpower is a muscle that gets tired. Also, as you say, I care more about my health than I did in my youth which was my motivation in cutting out sugar and sugary fruits, as well as trying the intermittent fasting. But that is what seems to have messed me up, causing the binging. Recently, I started to eat 1 or two large bowls of oatmeal with dates and a bit of coconut milk or oatmeal with peanut butter, to stave off all out binges, which fill me up and limit the binge from 3-6000 calories to a mere 894 calories. And the weight has started to come off again. I think, as you say, to not make it so hard. Whatever hard is for you. Overall I found this video helpful. I would like to find a way to do intermittent fasting but I am struggling with my need to eat after a work out and still being able to have a meal after work. The other women I've spoken to, some of which are fitness instructors, also say that intermittent fasting makes them "hangry" and that low carb causes binging. The men seem to have no problem. Yet I feel like if I don't go with this no sugar, low carb, fasting thing, I will age faster and get sick. What to do? Sorry about all this detail. But I want to find something that works for weight maintenance and health and so far this low carb, fasting thing has ruined the results I was so proud of.

    I am all into intermittent fasting, and I am glad you focus on the needs of women over 50. I have two comments First: I am post-menopausal and I am most disturbed by my loss of libido. I don't believe in supplemnts and I thought healthy living would make a difference so now what? It is said 90% of sex is in the head and 10% is in the body.. I am not ready to give up sex and it is not my head that is the problem! Secondly: I am a runner for fun, 25 miles a week or more and training for a marathon. So far my longest run was 16.5 miles on a hilly trail. Althletes and fun runners nutritional needs are seldom mentioned. I am not laboriously running trails and hills for weight loss although it began that way, but during and after a long I am depleted. Any advice?

    One more thing. I'm not suggesting never exercising, just that you CAN lose weight without it. Exercise is important to good health. I plan to start as soon as I can. I'm 65 and my wife is 60, so we're not young. As Queen Gahwekazi said below, It's about life habits. Some of us can't lose weight for medical reasons. However we can all try. Again Happy Holidays 2016 to all.

      I understand the frustration. When we're younger we can make progress with just one element (i.e. diet or exercise), but as we get older, we have to have all of our ducks in a row to get the results we want. Make sure you're keeping your stress under control, sleeping, exercising lightly but regularly, and eating as I describe in the video and you'll start to get the scale moving again.

I've been on one of them for about a year with no apparent harm (I use it for 2 meals and have one usual meal a day). I'm pretty much menopausal and find it really convenient. Could it be an unwise thing to be doing??

I mean I have the exact same eating and exercising program all the time and my weight at age 48 goes out of my control it seems for months at a time and then back down to what is normal for me...I am sooo depressed and frustrated and it makes my life seem much unhappier ( sense of no control maybe)...can fluctuating hormones cause this much weight gain in some cyclical type of pattern ( up and down every six months with no reason in sight!)??,,,HELP!

    Hi Becky, I came across your videos and had a question. I'm chronically ill and have battled with my willpower AND my weight. Initially I was prescribed Prednisone for far too long. You can guess what happened. However, later on I found a functional medicine Dr and part of his program was an elimination diet, with the aid of HCG drops. Has the human chorionic gonaditropin (sp?) affected my metabolism going forward? I understand what its' purpose is, but is it harmful? The HCG definitely helped, however I was also on a very low calorie diet, so I'm not sure which helped me lose the weight, or was it the combination of both the diet AND HCG? Thanks in advance for your response and your channel!

    • @beckygillaspy
      @beckygillaspy  Před 7 lety +1

      Hi cbpapp, HCG diets are controversial because the drops or shots are not as effective without the very low calorie diet. I would recommend switching to a high fiber diet that's high in healthy fats for a permanent solution.

    I haven't finished the video yet but my mother doesn't enjoy the low carb food, due to her insulin resistance, even while eating on the low carb plan, she is hungry every 2 hours and thus either is miserable or give in and eats and so her caloric intake causes her to gain. It's hard for her to cook so it isn't easy. Fat does not make her full. I suspect that only happens when one isn't insulin resistant.

      Really should try I.F. or I.M.F. (Intermittent Fasting). After camping and binge eating, cuz when you are camping who wants to Diet 😎. I decided to start I.F. In the first week I dropped 5lbs ... yes it could be water weight. I am now on day 10.
      What I have noticed ... 1. Flatter tummy (no bloat) 2. More energy 3. WILLPOWER has returned.
      Like they say if you can break the cycle of doing something for at least 5 days you create a new habit. Thus you gain WILLPOWER.
      With I.F. you have to eat within a certain window and fast. Mine is 16/8. Research it, you will be amazed how easy it is to do. Sure some ppl are over the top with making it all about the Keto diet. Take it from me ... baby steps are the best.
      I will be 58 in Oct. Already through menopause and the Intermittent Fasting is giving me back my life. I am still at that stage where I have to eat some dark chocolate every day after dinner. So i grabbed chocolate covered blueberries in a serving size pack. It is the last piece of food that goes in my mouth. Day #14 i will try taking it out of my diet 3 days of that week and see how it goes.
      I'm about 20 pounds overweight. I need to incorporate a little walking each day. I do a mixture of Pilates and Yoga stretching each day due to have a back injury and other things that cause pain.
      What I am trying to say is ...
      You can regain your WILLPOWER. And i am glad I found this channel. I like listening to the advice given and feeling positive about it all.

      Dutches Dee Rae that's great! Your done with menopause though right? I did a lot of dieting at the beginning for me it was not the best thing to be doing . I've always exercised. I became so fatigued it all had to stop for awhile. I used plenty of willpower and then some. things need to be done a lot gentler for me now. I recommend anyone going thru the change to read New Menopausal Years the Wise womens way. The book I wish I had when I went thru really hard times not knowing what I was going thru. And I actually have done a lot of intermediate fasting last year. It seemed a lot easier at that time for me

      Hi sunsine2049, the meal plans I put together are not vegan or vegetarian. Grass-fed, organic meat is a good choice. I don't recommend a lot of meat because some of the protein comes from the plant foods (i.e. beans, greens). Same with grains, you can have a limited amount, but like you said, you have to balance the amount with your weight loss goal. Thanks for the comment!
