Romania Spends 1.1 Billion Euros To Acquire 54 M1A2 Abrams Tanks

- Romania on May 16 announced that it is negotiating to buy 54 modern M1A2 Abrams tanks from the US. These MBTs will help enhance the country's army power. Since the beginning of April 2022, the Romanian Ministry of Defense has started a plan to procure tanks as well as ammunition and training equipment from the US. The value of the deal is estimated at 1 billion euros (equivalent to 1.1 billion USD).

Romania has NATO bases on its territory,more exactly French ones, i live in Romania close to one such base, and see often French Leclerc tanks . We don't rush into strengthening our military because we are sure that we are defended by the French and NATO in general.
We have to strengthen our army tho. Because it will lead to quicker victory and lesser deaths.

@vadoc9330 Romanians did bought 78 leo 2 and 54 m1 abrams so they have now 689 tank if you count the t-90 and the t-85 and tr85m

They are the best modern tanks for stealth missions since they are very, very silent for a tank. It can come 50m close to an enemy position before being heard. By that time it's too late to even react. We choose the best.

trust me these will be the export version that iraq got too!! they'd be better off getting leopard A7's just on engine choice the damn Abrams cost around $300.00 with the 8 gallons of jet fuel it takes just to start the turbine!!

@annaparker8234woman, even the DOD is or at least was looking at a diesel powerpack to replace that fuel hog! it is NOT stealthier you can hear that bitch whining 5 to 8 times farther away than a diesel and for maintenance you need jet engine specialists a diesel any semi mechanic can work on it and the heat signature can be detected more than 3 times farther than a diesel engine's with ground sensors and 12 times with airborne sensors! it's only advantages are power output and not needing to warm up to operating temps in colder weather! besides tracked tanks are done anyway the future is big gunned 8x8's! there's less maintenance cheaper to buy easier to support in the field and move to the field!

Abrams not only is the best tank in the world who is battle tested but also could instill fear in enemy just by its presence on the battlefield.

Abrams is the best battle proven tank in the world and this puts Romania closer to US standards. NATO is not gonna come and save them if russia comes, NATO cant save anyone....it is the US the world calls when things go bad.
@@lgnfve you are wrong, NATO is already in Romania, we have French military bases here , i see often Leclerc tanks going from base to base. We have guarantee defense from France , North wing of the NATO is defended by Britain and US , south by Turkey, eastern (Romania and Bulgaria) by France

US has given over 125 billion to Ukraine to the EUs maybe 30 ? the world rises and sleeps under the protection the US provides. Ukraine war happened because the weakness of biden and his withdraw from Kabul.
noone needs to buy US tanks to get NATO protection, dummy. Romania got NATO protection anyway as a fin member.
onTopic: Plenty of NATO standard tanks on the market, several more modern and more capable too.
While not being bad per se, the Abrams is not the best choice for multiple reasons (short 120mm, no autoloader, old torsion bar suspension, etc.)
As for "battle proven" ... so are plenty of other tanks, including the often forgotten Ariete. That proof to smash some outdated russian tanks under the cover of overwhelming air superiority some ages ago is worth sh*t ... pretty much every western tank was capable to do what Abrams did.
And as we have seen exported Abrams blow up just like any other tank too, they aint magic plotarmor ... Even if there would be a silly thing like a "best MBT" it wouldnt be the export model of Abrams.

Yeah, we've seen in Iraq and Yemen against irregular militias and forget the export model lacks DU because there's only two front panels with DU and the destroyed Abrams weren't even hit in that part anyway!
