Heyo! Somethings I wanna include or throw out:
- I hadda record this at close to 1am in the morning and then the second half the following day due to college and work!!
- yes I know that at 2:56 Steve Masons face is all wacky for like 1sec and it irks me too haha.
- Also, Mason actually declined his offer to play in the Younggun game due to an injury... So essentially, he got hurt and STILL won the Calder.. Beast.
Hope y’all enjoyed!!
Mason did play great in his Calder year but def was set up for success. Ken Hitchcock is known for a defensive system and their d core had been together for a couple seasons so were a good unit keeping a lot of shots to the outside.
Ahh yes Jim Carey. The net detective
Lol😂
😂😂
I remember all those '...ssssSmokin' quotes on SportsCentre like 3 times a week that whole season..
Let’s go avs
The Mask
As Cheechoo was on the decline, I remember Jumbo Joe working his magic and giving Devin Setoguchi a break out year that he never matched again. Playing with Thornton during his elite playmaking years was just a gift...
Andrew Raycroft, another goalie who won a Calder but then didn't do much else.
Well he did get Rask to Boston.
Andrew Raycrap
As a Columbus fan, calling the Blue Jackets “nothing but mediocre” after their first 8 seasons is putting it VERY lightly. We actually had some really solid goaltending from the likes of Tugnutt, Denis and Leclaire up to that point, but it was never enough to actually push us into the offseason. You highlighted the importance of Mason’s rookie season perfectly
Thanks sm man!! Many ppl just think it’s weird cause he began to fall off slowly afterwards, but the Masons rise to dominance that year reminds me a lot of Elvis this szn... Just so many similarities.. Hope you enjoyed!!
You are very right fellow CBJ fan
Jackman was not a point scorer, on the blues he was always one of the more defensive minded people on the D line. But he was consistently in the plus column while also averaging 17-23.5 minutes a game. Especially playing on the blues teams he played on who were usually average at best that’s pretty damn good.
I was going to say something about Jackman, but you summed it up perfectly.
He played with pronger his first year
Theodore and Jarome Iginla did end up tied for total points in Hart balloting, but the only reason Iginla didn't win outright was that one journalist from Quebec left Iginla off his top 5 ballot completely... this should really have been seen as more of a scandal than it actually was... but it did lead to a rule change in how awards were voted on going forward...
I saw every game of Theodore that year and he deserved that Hart fully. He is the main responsible for almost every win the Habs had that year. Just go ahead and take a look a this roster and you'll understand.
Zetterberg was completely screwed out of that Calder... BUT I'm guessing he never lost any sleep over it.
Not really considering he was 4 years older than Rick Nash and had 5 more points
I hate when people talk smack about honestly amazing players who were screwed over by injury. They deserved all of the hype, awards, and effort put into them, they just got screwed over by luck
Jonathan Cheechoo was a star in my books. I'm afraid the doctors screwed him over in San jose since he was Canadian
@@lordvasileLive lol what..? 17/36 players who suited up for San Jose in 06 were Canadian.
@@Igoruhandchu None of those players won a cup besides Bill Guerin
@@lordvasileLive what does that have to do with doctors doing their job?
@@Igoruhandchu Canada has free Health Care, So in the States some Canadians get screw over my team doctors etc.
Thank you for giving Jackman props and not just making it about points. Jax proved that defense was to be taken seriously
When jaime benn won the art ross that was strange, I think he had a hat trick in the last game to win it?
Thats a good one! Been was one of the lowest producers to win it. I believe with around 86-89 points!
87 points. He scored 3 goals and an assist (the assist came with 9 seconds remaining on an empty netter) in the last game of the season to pass John Tavares with 1 point.
@@robins5798 Close! 3 goals, 1 assist.....the 3rd goal was the empty netter, and he clinched the Art Ross with a second assist (the clearing attempt bounced off him to Trevor Daley, who passed to Eakin for the goal). It was a very, very crazy finish! If he didn't get that extra assist, Tavares would've won as he had the tiebreaker, which I think was total goals.
@@Stevo935 Take it easy. Calm the fuck down.
I’ll always remember Cheechoo. Sad his career declined, but he was super fun to watch play
Steve Mason had 10 shutouts in his rookie season. I think that's what really swung the voting.
You make too many great videos. I have so much binging to do lol
Thanks man!!
Eh I’m sure Zetterburg was much happier with how his career turned out lol
Theodore was the MVP that year. Everything before and after is moot. He carried Montreal that year without captain Koivu.
Zetterberg losing the Calder to Barret Jackman in 2002-03
Huge crock of shit!
Yesterday I found out Tom barraso did not get inducted into the HHOF so I thought maybe you should do a video on the best players that are not in the HHOF or players that should not be in the HHOF
👀
Didn’t Tom Barrasso come straight from high school to play in the Stanley Cup playoffs his first year? I’d say that’s pretty strange.
Other guys like Petr bondra Daniel Alfredson
@@AAbram-yt9de no playoffs but came into the NHL as an 18 year old out of high school hockey and won the Calder and Vezina in his rookie season. He was a 5th overall pick that year and was highly touted. This was amazing considering the fact he beat Steve Yzerman for rookie of the year. Overall Barrasso had an amazing career with two cups in Pittsburgh.
Maybe because no one likes him. He was known as Tom the Asshole. Or a jerk.
Some players like Dubnyk are given TONS of chances and finally stabilize their careers.
Saying a defenceman didn’t put up enough points, is often like saying a goalie didn’t put up enough points.
My one stat for a good defensemen is +/-
@@kushkingla7385 and even that is highly disputed. +/- is not a very reliable stat if look deeper into it
Steve Mason was a good goalie, he just wasted his career in Columbus
Imagine being a rookie defenseman and you have Al MacInnis and Chris Pronger as your mentors. Jackman's job was to shutdown the other teams best star every single night. I miss watching Jackman vs. Kane and Backes vs. Toews even though the hawks were a superior team.
So after doing abit of research the hart going to Theodore made sense all things considered since it’s given to the player judge most valuable to his team with a .931 save percentage and basically 2 GAA on a team where the best forward had 56 points he was likely arguably the reason the team made the playoffs that year so I think it makes sense he won the hart if you don’t just look at goalie numbers. Considering the back ups for Theodore had mediocre numbers though and compared to Roy who’s back up had better numbers then he had even (obviously with less games played)
I think it’s strange in the context that he took down such bigger names in order to win the award. No doubt his impact was greatly felt on that MTL team, but when ppl see that Theodore took down Iggy AND Roy it seems very strange to at least the average fan that is. Nonetheless, this comment further proves just how insane Jose was that season!! Thanks for stopping by!!
Goalies shouldn't get the MVP unless they do something historic. Theodore didn't do anything historic and shouldn't have won. It was east coast bias, clearly. If Theodore played in Colorado he may not have even won the Vezina.
Ok we have a paulafan who’s biased against goalies… sad.
But I totally agree with iTzMrBeau : Theo got it over Roy because… I mean, look at the team they each had in front of them. Theodore playing this way in Colorado that year, and he leads them to the cup.
And isn’t that the Flames team that would go to cup final and get (allegedly, up for debate) robbed by Tampa?
So yeah, Theodore did all that with a sub par (almost AHL team) in front of him.
Like, it was a worst squad than 2021-2022, and that’s saying a lot.
And don’t get me wrong, I’m a habs fans but I always hated Theodore. I was happiest when they traded him for David Aebischer.
Carreys rapid decline had a lot to do with scouting. Right around the time Washington traded him some scouts noticed he was very weak on side to side movement. Word got around and things went south.
Iginla was the first player to win the art ross since I was born in 82 who wasnt Mario, Jagr or Gretzky. 19 years. If that isnt Hart worthy, then I dont know what is
Loved the video, but I think it should be worth noting that Steve Mason had significant concussion issues since his time in Columbus that often would go unnoticed. His rapid decline can definitely be attributed to that
Same thing happened to Matt Murray here in Pittsburgh several concussions.
Yeah, that's how I remember Mason. Promising but destroyed by injuries. His last year or two in Columbus were always "Will Mason play?" questions
Bit harsh making the Makarov rule though. He was the oldest to win it, probably unlikely to be repeated so why bother? He was a rookie in the NHL, tore the league up. That's all it should come down to.
Yeah a rookie is a rookie I've never liked the makarov rule.
You deserve more subs
Thanks Elliott!! That means a lot.
I agree
Yeah
Wow Zetterberg got snubbed
Not really. Jackman was a defenseman that shut down the opposition. It's not like Zetterberg had 80 points. And Jackman had a decent career; just didn't elevate to Norris candidate.
Cheechoo was getting better every year but when he was paired with the passing machine Jumbo Joe his progress was doubled, maybe even tripled. It’s sad to see injuries take out potential. You have to give him credit though for trying to regain his previous form for so long.
Great vid! Bud
I would like to see some more hockey history👀
Thanks man. That’s what we always try to do here!!
Great video dude, this was such a great topic
Thanks man!
I got flashbacks with Theodore. When he was on he was great. When he wasn’t ooooffaaa.
As an Avs Fan...I hate Jose Theobore. Dude ruined the Stastny Avs that had a chance to be Contenders but never could with such horrifically bad Goaltending.
The GOAT with another vid
Thanks sm man!!
Tru dat
Anyone who watched Jose Theodore season that year is not shocked he has a hart trophy.
Agree with carey. He was the talk of the 95-96 season. He was awesome and it was so short lived. They're lucky they had kolzig. Cheech was amazing during the mid 2000s.
No sure why Felix Potvin didnt win the Vezina trophy 5 times.
The defining aspect for the reason why makarov was not brought into the NHL sooner wasn't just because he was Russian was the fact that he was part of the Russian military because for a lot of years the Russian team was called the central red army team. He would have had to defect which is what happened with Alexander Mogilny years later... Just a bit of information for that segment
Such draft single handedly destroyed the careers of Alexander Svitov & Stanislav Chistov in 2001
Hey it's me again. As a Columbus Blue Jackets fan you are very right about Steve Mason #1. I was in kindergarten when he and Jakub Voracek #93 came about. Although I always liked Voracek since I grew up worshipping him and Rick Nash #61... Especially since Voracek was one of the only handful of talented Blue Jackets players outside of Nash at the time sadly. Now Mason broke Ron Tugnutt #31 record of 22 wins in a season with 33 wins in a season. Although Tugnutt was 22-25-5 during the 2000-2001 inaugural season and Mason would be 33-20-7 during the Blue Jackets 1st playoff appearance. Tugnutt's stats with the Blue Jackets was 34-52-8 with a 2.62 GAA and Mason's stats with the Blue Jackets was 96-99-27 with a 2.90 GAA. Although I only say Tugnutt is better because his GAA was 2nd best with 2.62 but however Mason is only better in terms of winning percentage since he was 96-99-27 and Tugnutt was 34-52-8! But you are very right about Mason's rookie year it was somewhat unexpected.
I would say Jim Carey is the biggest mystery of all...craziest story...Brian Boucher as well from Philly when I was growing up was good, then fell off and disappeared until he had a random shutout streak then disappeared again lol
You have to give more credit to Theodore. The Canadiens stunk in those years. This comes from a Java fan who watched them closely during those years as a kid. I also played defenseman in hockey for years. Terrible defense. Patrice Brisebois was their #1. He probably couldn't get #3 on the top teams on the depth chart. Many rookie mistakes. Theodore made the Canadiens competitive for 2 years. I often wonder if he had a good team how his career could have been different. Similarly to Luongo.
Comparing Roy who had Adam Foote, Ray Bourque, Sandis Ozolinsh and Rob Blake. Talking hall of fame players.
Versus Theodore who had Patrice Brisebois has his best defenseman...
Another great one buddy. I even stuck around to enjoy the commercials, if you know what I mean...chaching!
😂 ay thanks Phil! I appreciate you man. Always nice seeing ya stop by!!
@@idontgivetkachuk I try to catch 'em all. Appreciate your hard work with your busy schedule.
Theodore had a good season but the Hart going to him was a joke. Lost all confidence in voters after that disgrace.
That Makarov Rule is horse hockey- how are we supposed to win a Calder now, my fellow Dreamers?
They have the Rocket Richard for most goals, the Art Ross for most points, they should introduce a new award for most assists to recognize the best passers and playmakers in the game. Those were definitely my biggest strengths when I played, and I don’t think that type of skill set gets enough credit. Name the award after Joe Thornton too, what a beast.
The Gretzky award.
1963 career assists.
The adam Oates award
Jackman would have been better if he didn’t get Bertuzzi’d. His concussions cut his career down a bit. I watched him play in juniors and he was a shutdown monster. It was like watching a man play versus kids.
could we get another video on the worst calls! Would really like a follow up to that video!
Also keep up the bangers 💯💯💯
Perhaps. And thanks Steven! Glad you enjoyed!
Goalies winning as rookies relies heavily on shooters not having a book on them, the sophomore jinx kicks in and the greats learn to adapt, the mediocre fall away. People forget that even Patrick Roy was benched in his 2nd season after winning the cup. He managed to overcome his fall back and have a solid consistent career, Jim Carey sadly did not. Jordan Binnington et al take note. Can go either way here.
So true about rookie goalies. Most of this was before advanced stats and in depth video. Also left handed goalies really seem to throw shooters off.
@@AAbram-yt9de Its a similar phenomenon to boxing. Left handed fighters still cause even experienced guys problems because your brain makes assumptions. In a fast paced sport like hockey a split second delay is all a goalie needs to make a save. Come the next season there advantage has gone, NHL shooters are just too good.
Theodore was awesome
Theodore’s Hart trophy season was aided by the fact that Lemieux, Thornton, Forsberg and Bertuzzi all missed a significant amount of games that year and Iginla’s team missed the playoffs, he was quite solid until after the lockout when they put restrictions on goalie equipment size.
Iginla should have gotten the Hart Trophy. Rumor was that a reporter in Montreal didn't put Iginla in his voting (you voted for top 5 in that category).
He had a great year but I disagree with awarding the Hart to a player who misses the playoffs, McDavid, Benn and St Louis all won Art Ross trophies in recent years without making the playoffs and they didn’t win the MVP either.
Iggy and Theodore had the same amount of votes but Theodore had 26 1st place votes and Iginla only had 23
You are right points don't always matter, however Zetterberg did it all, not just score.
Many times mental attitude and the way the training staff treats a player can in some cases change his career that’s why so many players when they leave and organization many times don’t do as well sometimes they completely crash and burn
I woulda loved for Iginla to get that Hart trophy but when they both get the same amount of votes you have to pick the guy who got his team to the playoffs. Iginla unfortunately could not.
Great video dude.
2:30 nice fkn hat it's hard to find a hat that can hold the tortilla in a taco shape whiles you fill it
Cheechoo was slowly rising for years before that record year. Its just outside of San Jose, nobody really noticed.
Also, there's a funny story on how the Sharks drafted Cheechoo. The Sharks had the #2 pick in the NHL draft. Tampa had 1. Tampa blasted to the world that they'd take Vincent Lecavalier. But Sharks GM Dean Lombardi insinuated he was taking David Legwand, doing things like walking out of a GM meeting telling everyone he was going to interview Legwand (which was true). Legwand himself was convinced he was going to the Sharks. On or near draft day, Lombardi approached the GM for Nashville (then an expansion team on thier first draft) and offered to swap first round picks (Nashville had #3) for Nashville's second round pick. One GM told Nashville don't do it, but he did. Nashville got the second pick and immediately grabbed Legwand. Then without missing a beat, the Sharks grabbed Brad Stewart. And that's when a bunch of people looked at the Sharks' scouting records and player interviews and realized Stewart was the target the whole time. The whole insinuation about Legwand was just to throw everyone off.
Oh, that second round pick the Sharks got from Nashville? They used it to draft Jonathan Cheechoo.
How was Tim Thomas not on this list? Lol
Bro Chechoo what a legend
All aboard the Cheechoo Train 🚂
Chechoo "one hit wonder "... goes on to name a several good seasons he had haha. These lists are tough though .. still a decent video.
as a Caps fan, i do not know why Carey was traded away. the only thing i can assume (yes, i am well aware what it means) that Kolzig was ready to usurp Carey's starting gig.
if my memory serves me right then the Caps-Bruins trade wasn't so odd. both teams were floundering at the bottom of the standings at the time of the trade. the Caps got Adam Oates and Joe Juneau in the swap. to add insult to injury, the Caps would play and eliminate the Bruins in the 97-98 playoff season.
Could you do One hit Wonders
For example Steve Mason
It’s similar but not exactly
The Florida Panthers are OHWs too, thanks to Vanbiesbrouck.
I have a signed Steve mason stick from his rookie season
That’s awesome!!
Not the same as a lot of these guys, but pronger should not have a hart trophy. It was pretty much solely because of his +/-. Lidstrom had a better year production wise. Jagr was a force.
You deserve 50k subs

PK Subban winning the Norris despite not playing any defense?
Theodore's Hart Trophy win was 2002. In 2001 the Hart Trophy winner was Super Joe Sakic. In 2000, it was Chris Pronger.
All I remember Steve Mason is for having sick masks and being average for the Flyers and sometimes blowing games.
I remember Steve Mason constantly beating the Flames every dang time Id be at a game 🤣
@@idontgivetkachuk The Flyers finally got their franchise goalie we were waiting for. I hope Carter Hart is the hype that he is worth. Also do a video on 47 picks before Carter Hart.
Some of this weird stuff can be attributed to the goalie pad restrictions and the introduction of one piece sticks in 2002-2003.
Well it seems that both times goalie gear has been shrinked, it has had next to non effect on scoring. First was 2005 and second 2012 or 2013.

And I hate ppl that say because A defender doesn’t have a bunch of points and isn’t a liability defensively lol means he isn’t good...the guy is a defensman not a forward! Only ppl that don’t actually know anything about hockey would say something so stupid...Its the defensive defensman that make it a possibility for these offensive Guys to even excel..I think Sergei Gonchar is a perfect example of a d man that put up a lot of points but that didn’t make him a good d man, cause he was horrible!
as for Makarov , you are new in the league well you are a rookie in the league simple as that for me .
