      Also, as a side note, my son and I were in attendance when they played their last game in Vancouver against Arizona and it was the most emotional hockey moment I’ve ever experience in person. My little guy was about 8 at the time and we just sat in the stands for 20 minutes after the game ended and cheered and cried along with 18,000 other people. Pretty magical!

      @@yoholmes273 of the tens of thousands of players who have struggled to make the NHL over the last hundred or so years a majority of them haven’t won a Stanley Cup. Most of them won’t win Gold Medals or the Hart Trophy or the King Clancy or the Art Ross or the Ted Lindsay but the twins did that. Everybody wants a cup but I guarantee they have no regrets when it comes to their career.
      Also, there was a time that they easily could have asked for a trade to go to a contender rather than round out their career on a bottom feeder like Vancouver at that time but they didn’t. That says a lot about their character.

No, he was always the best player at every level he played and people were already talking about him in bantam. Same thing for Gretzky. At 15 he was already playing with 20 year olds and averaging 2 points per game. It's very possible that Pollock saw him and made the trade with him in mind, considering he did something similar with Lafleur before and was way ahead of everyone else in terms of scouting at that time.

    The Sharks getting Brad Stuart after trading away the picks that ended up being Vincent Lecavalier and David Legwand actually benefited the franchise a few years later. They packaged Stuart, Sturm, and Primeau and traded them to Boston and got Jumbo Joe Thornton. Bonus fact: the Sharks also received a 2nd round pick in the same trade that had them trade the 1st round pick that ended up being Legwand to Nashville. That 2nd round pick was Jonathan Cheechoo, who benefited big time from having Joe Thornton as a linemate in 2005-06.

They had a Swedish exchange student that lived with them. A very nice young woman named Olga. Well she came home that night with her boyfriend Peter (also Swedish). He saw me watching the game and said “ my brothers play hockey, they’re really good. They’re twins”. I was like cool man that’s awesome. Peter said, “ no I don’t think you understand. They’re really good and are going to be drafted into the NHL.” The internet wasn’t as prevalent as it is today so I couldn’t exactly look it up. Well that was Peter Sedin, Henrik and Daniels brother. A few things that need to be said about the Habs stealing the #1 pick for 1980.
    1. The trade was made in 1977-78, not 1976.
    2. The deal was made when the NHL draft was in a chaotic state of flux due to the WHA raiding junior clubs of players as young as 15 as they had no age limits unlike the NHL.
    3. Like with Guy in 1971, Pollack had a player in mind based on the NHL's draft rules at the time. (They had lowered their age limit from 22 to 21 to 20 and now to 19. It would lower yet again after the NHL/WHA merger a year later.) The man he wanted was Soo Greyhounds' wonder kid Wayne Gretzky who would be eligible in 1980 and likely the consensus #1 pick if he stayed in junior in the event of the WHA folding. The problem was the WHA survived another year and they snagged Wayne when he was 17 meaning he would NOT be eligible for the draft so the Habs needed to start from 0 when that draft took place.
    4. Pollack's reign as Canadiens' GM ended soon after this trade took place and his successor, Grundman, trainwrecked the pick drafting for a need instead of the best player on the board.

    Nathan Horton and the Sedin twins were both instrumental in the Bruins' 2011 Stanley Cup win. Horton, after getting a severe concussion, became the guy in the locker room who would rally the Bruins to victory. Whether it be dumping Boston water onto the Vancouver ice or having his agent, Bobby Orr, waving the #18 banner before game 6.
    The Sedins just faded into the background. I remember one of them being punched repeatedly in the face by Brad Marchand and looking at the referee for a call. It was moves like that that caused Mike Milbury to famously refer to the Sedins as Thelma and Louise.

  • @RRaquello
    @RRaquello Před 2 lety +1

    The Penguins trading the Brian Lawton pick worked out for them in unforseen ways. Lawton was a surprise selection, Minnesota GM Lou Nanne being guilty of thinking too much. Lafontaine was long considered the consensus #1 pick in that draft. So if Pittsburgh kept the pick, they would likely have taken Lafontaine. Lafontaine was a great player, not great enough to have Pittsburgh vastly improved over the next couple of years, but good enough that they probably would have finished ahead of the Devils in 1983-84 and Mario Lemieux would have ended up a Devil instead of a Penguin, and the Penguins would be playing somewhere like Saskatoon or Hamilton today instead of Pittsburgh. On top of that, the Islanders were definitely going for Yzerman if Lafontaine had not become so unexpectedly available, so three very famous players, Lafontaine would have been a Penguin, Lemieux would have been a Devil and Yzerman would have been an Islander. But all because Pittsburgh traded that pick to Minnesota, it ended up different.

    A successful draft pick swap can make a GM’s career. Which is why they gamble on it. Obviously Craig Patrick was towards the end of the line when he got Fluery, having a couple cups already in the 90’s. But that kind of swap to land that kind of player, who pans out, is the type to spring a career. Not that it comes to fruition often, but that is the gamble the GMs are often willing to take. Especially when their team is bad. You are desperately looking for a cornerstone to build around. Because your days are already numbered with a sucky team. Why not full send it and try to get the Sedin Twins?

And while it wasn't the #1 pick the Flyers taking Mike Ricci ahead of Jamir Jagr in the 1990 draft was an exercise in stupidity. If the Flyers take Jagr in 1990 then Forsberg in 1991 they wouldn't have needed to trade for Lindros. Then say they still make the trade with Montreal that brought in LeClair, imagine a line with Forsberg, Jagr, and LeClair. It could have rivaled the line of Gretzky, Tikkenen, and Kurri.
