I forgot how graphically impressive this game is. One of the best-looking NES games for sure.
I Never forgot how good this game looks. I still play it from time to time. It's especially fun with the more energy from hearts cheats as well as the more ammo from pick ups.
The graphcis and soundtrack are easily some of the best from the NES. I still listen to this soundtrack pretty frequently after all these years
Good graphics, but the environments tend to look generic and repetitive as the game goes on.

Its kind of nice if you die at the joker and have to do that stage all over again you dont have to fight that first boss again. That stage leading to him though is frustrating.

I had this video paused and I was bored standing in line at the bank and when I unlocked my phone, it auto-resumed and said "JUST PUNCH THE SHIT OUT OF EVERYBODY". It was embarassing but it also felt like the evil conscience on my shoulder speaking out loud, so it was kinda funny too.

Stage 3-4 boss, at the start of the fight, wall jump left and up on the first ledge, take a split second to select the gun, then as the boss is leaping to the left side of the screen, you jump to the right ledge and then drop down on the right side of the screen. If done correctly, boss stays facing the left while you shoot from the right side of the screen. As long as you time your shots correctly the boss will stay stunlocked / attacking / jumping /facing the wall until death. If you don't time your shots right the boss will correct and continue the fight. You need to be almost full on ammo going in.
This game has one of the best soundtracks of all time and brings back so many great memories. I never beat the game as a kid, but later in life I was finally able to beat it after many hours of trial and error (Joker is a rough boss fight)
I remember being an 11 year old staying home from church to play this game, and getting so frustrated I was screaming at the TV and my Nintendo Power because I JUST KEPT DYING at the same point. I've since made this game my bitch, but man it was beyond me back then.

I remember getting every part of the game down perfectly, until the last boss. I always went in with full health. I thought of the boomerang trick to cause extra damage, but couldn't get the placement quite right to defeat the Joker...
omg well you was so stupid kid bc here we dont care a lot for the church to go we go super small times for that we just dont care about church but in the game if you die on the same point you are verry stupid bc this first is old game and sec thing is this game is not online to make changes she is just you playing vs like pc machine something like that for that you just need to learn in your head how the levels works in the game and to just not do the same mistake how you was that stupid noob

9:03 - Man, those big jumping guys are the worst. These levels were run killers for me and I was never able to beat the game as a kid. Unfortunately, I didn't learn about shooting them at the edge of the screen until much later.
Definitely walled me and my brother for a long time too. The first time we got to the sewers they destroyed us.

This channel is great, but I like the way Ryu talks, I can't put my finger on it, but the cadence is just very mellow.
As a kid I only ever got to the sewer level. It's cool to see what the rest of the game looked like.

That was an amazing playthrough! This game is an absolute gem! Too bad the sequels on the NES are nowhere near as good. As a kid, I only ever made it to the second stage, but I didn't realize this game was so short!
Man, I hope Ryu eventually tries out _Shatterhand_ on the NES! It is very similar to this game in that it starts decently challenging, but gets extra tough by the final stage.

The NES sequels were still pretty good, to be fair. I would say Batman Returns is the weakest one.
On the third boss, stand on the left edge of the upper left platform and just keep punching at him when he jumps. The guy can't even touch you.
This was the same tactic I used when the game first game out to beating him. I will also state, that is it made much easier if you use a controller with turbo functions.

It's been a long time since I played this great game, but I remember for the stage 3 boss you could wall jump up to the ledge and then stay on the edge closest to the wall and then just keep punching while crouched. You'll hit the boss whenever he jumps from one side to the other but will be just outside his hitbox so you never take any damage.
13:53 and the next thirty seconds are prolly the best gameplay ever recorded. I could even just say the start of this level until cutting to a new scene after trying like 9474997292 times to get full health. It had me dying.

As a kid i used to play this game at my friends grandma. Usually the old TV didnt work, so we used to hit on top of it. Once we got really scared when the batman jumped on the screen when it started working :D thanks Ryu for the trip to memory lane!
You were wondering about the colors of those enemies on the ceiling you farm drops from. The NES can only display 16 colors on the screen at once, so they have to palette swap bad guys sometimes so that they'll use some of the same colors from the backgrounds and/or other sprites in any given level. No surprise if they need most of the colors already for the beautiful backgrounds in this game!
This game IS a gem…. I remember it being difficult, but it doesn’t come close to touching Battletoads or bayou Billy.

So far this is the only game I haven't beat of the ones where you've debunked the difficulty. I've enjoyed watching the previous videos in the series for nostalgia and learning things I didn't know, but I think now it's time to get revenge on the Joker.

It's crazy. When the music started it took me back to Christmas morning as a kid. Triggered a memory I didn't know I had. Forgot how much I loved/hated this game. Sitting here watching it on my TV and my old systems are stored below the TV. I so badly want to hook up my old NES and try this game again. I could never beat joker though. He always managed to destroy me and my confidence lol. I really enjoy these videos
It sounds like a Castlevania 3 remix of that stage after you beat Draculas son. The one with the sword wielding skeleton and the dinosaur skulls.
It's a comfort to know that the point I could never get past is pretty much where every good player got stuck. That last stage felt impossible back in the day. It's odd that they changed the ending from the movie to Batman overtly committing murder.

What I like about these debunking videos is that you’re not even that good at them (no offense), not some sort of game wizard beating them, but you’re just an average gamer like me but you’re really good at breaking down games to make them extremely beatable. I love it.

This is such a good game that being a licensed title actually held it back. If you had the same gameplay but skinned as generic punching ninja dude it would have launched a new franchise.

@13:05 There's a trick to that boss. You wanna immediately wall jump from the left vert to the first platform on the left. You can pick em off when he jumps! Works every time.
there was also a way to glitch him so that he would get stuck facing one wall and you could just walk up behind him and punch him until he died

I'm almost positive that the ceiling enemies drop more health the lower on health you are, and drop less the more health you have. It's been a fairly common technique in gaming for decades. It helps keep things a bit more fair in a really clever and hidden way. Obviously I don't know for sure that's what's happening here, but I'd bet on it. I'm playing this right now and damn, it is so good. The movement, controls and physics are absolutely mind blowing for an NES game. You have a very high level of control over your movement, which is not common in this era of gaming. So impressive. Looking forward to trying Return of the Joker next.
i remember having this game. The best Batman game on the NES. I just recently found a copy to replace my missing one from childhood. I played this game all the time back in the day. Never beat it. Gonna have to give it another try now. thanks.
gosh this takes me back, my brother and I used to play the crap outta this game when I was 8 and he was 20. Mom and Dad noticed how competitive we were getting and started placing bets on who would beat the game first. Day before he shipped off to boot for the air force, I beat the game. 3 hours later he beat it. Mom won the bet but damn, 34 years later he has yet to let it go...
Love the series…even though it makes my rage quitting as a child seem pointless; if only I had stayed calm, cool, & under control.
Man, not only does the soundtrack slap, but I hadn't realized how many cutscenes and high res images they managed to cram onto this tiny NES cart.
cant believe the rich color in this game.....dark city's ...caves....water rooms....a very unique style for my days in the 80's....they did awesome with this one

As for a request, I'd like to see you beat Castlevania Adventure for the Gameboy (played on an emulator or Super Gameboy).
I feel like the “hidden moves” like the point blank wall jumps and the hit-box invincibility when attacking enemy’s so quickly represents what Batman is all about. Ninja like hidden moves used perfectly w the restrictions of the NES. Freakin’ genius.
as a child, the final boss (of course the Joker) looked hard as hell to me. many years later, knowing the right strategy, it looks very different. but i did love the challenge, i absolutely loved it. overall good game and i especially liked the OST.
this game deserves an indie follow-up. Inticreates should get a hold of it. the current mechanics are fine so there's no need to alter them. so add new features like flying in the bat wing, driving in the batmobile, use smoke bombs, use the grappling hook or various other gadgets. lastly have Batman fight more of his foes from the rogues gallery.

Dude the memories with this game! The music and graphics are still great today. And God do I remember that Joker fight lol. Never could beat him, most of the time I'd be on my last life when I got there.
I remember this one time I reached the Joker with a handful of lives left. I remember pausing the game as soon as it went to his screen, trying to mentally prepare myself lol. Just to get annihilated. Then my controller somehow exploded. Weird.

I remember I beat this game as a kid but it made me so mad I once cursed in front of my mother which got me into loads of trouble.
I'd love to see Snake Rattle 'n' Roll. Especially towards the end that game has some insane platforming and the isometric view was pretty unique on the NES.
Ooh, that was a favorite in our house back in the day... although nobody ever managed to get past stage 6 because we didn't know what the fish tail powerup did!
Joker being twice as big as Batman was foreshadowing the final battle of Arkham Asylum.
This game was definitely ahead of its time. A true gem. So valuable that any remake would only destroy its legacy.

This series is great. We all have memories of these difficult levels. The tight platforming of the later levels sticks in my memory on this one. Also the classic soundtrack.
I picked up the NECCA figure a few years ago at a comic con. It’s one of my favourite pieces of my Batman collection

Item drops as far as I know is dependenant on the CPU and frame timing, that's why speedrunners always reset the console completly every run so they are in the correct drop window everytime. I don't know the technical explanation but it's something like during the 60 frame window, health can drop at certain intervals, and speedrunners don't want health, they want ammo so they make sure that they start the game at a point so they are guaranteed ammo drops. So if you keep killing enemies in a rythmic pattern, you will kill them in the same frame window everytime, or close to, which means if you start getting health, you will keep getting health. Or something like that.
Could you imagine, that as a kid I played this game for years - and NEVER, ever figured out that you can switch from your fist to a weapon - I was so used to games that had no option - I just punch my way into the first boss and hit a roadblock - I spent weeks and weeks trying to defeat the boss with just my fist - and only managed to time it so that I hit him ONCE - just once I was able to punch the guy... and never again... so I never passed the first boss.... untill youtube that is.... it's sad, because I loved this game so much - the music, the custcenes, BATMAN was a great movie at the time - I loved it so much and never was able to figure out the weapons.....

Great game. My only slight irks are the falling physics, as you mentioned, and that little crouch he does before a jump. But they don't hamper the enjoyment. One of the best platformers of all time
For the first form of the final boss, instead of walking back and forth and absorbing his fireballs, you can stand right next to the wall and jump over each fireball and hit him with the batarang each time he gets close to you. For maximum damage with the batarang using this method, you have to time your fireball jumps early enough to hit him straight on with it. You can throw it on the way down from your jump, but it will basically only do 1 damage to him instead of whacking him for a ton of health if you time your jump just a little earlier and land before you throw the batarang. Using this method, I only take damage if I fuck up my jump.

at 3:05 if you actually activate that ninja without killing him, he has some really sweet and unique moves and attacks. But he is so easy to kill and that is his only appearance, that hardly anyone ever sees him in action or knows what he does.
The two games I could not beat as a kid were Rygar and Blaster Master on the NES... I loved playing the first two or three sections of blaster master over and over again...

For an nes comic book game, this was pretty darn good. It’s like if Castlevania, Ninja Gaiden and Megaman had a 3 some. And you know Megaman’s the one bitin’ the pillow in that mix.
Ill never forget the night i beat the game right before bed. I played that stage till 2am then beat it and bragged at school the next day.
