      @@BudgetModelRailways We (me and 7 yr old Sylvia) are about to make a permanent layout and wrestle with questions like: how important is realism... weathering... a continuous loop of track... ? etc. I tend to think that the point is to create whatever gets your excitement going... Your videos are very encouraging!

    • @BudgetModelRailways

      @@mewsdo . Ignore all advice from the purists. There is a guy on Instagram who is making a pink and purple layout with mushroom houses and pink locomotives. It's what you enjoy, none of my layouts ate based on a era or region. Don't ballast track, use ballast mat, roofing felt is good, it's quicker, simpler and more reliable. I would go for a simple oval to watch the trains go round with a couple of sidings for shunting. I aim for a realistic look from a distance, not perfection. I think with a younger child speed of build is important to keep their interest. Get some track down so you can see trains running and then build scenery and buildings. Anything we can do to help just ask

    Your layout looks superb. It’s good that you focus on budget. Some of the prices now are ridiculous, and I cannot afford. I buy most of my things second hand from a great little Aladdins Cave of a railway shop near me in Ticehurst. I prefer it that way, as it retains the magic that we all felt as children, and I never know what’s going to turn up. All the best !!

    • @BudgetModelRailways
      @BudgetModelRailways  Před 2 lety +1

      @@BudgetModelRailways Yes indeed, I agree, and Richard is such a nice fellow. I feel my visits to his shop, I live in Tunbridge Wells, evoke the magic that I felt as a youngster. As I say, I never know what I’ll return with. The prices of most of the new stuff are beyond my pocket, and I seem to watch review after review of brand new models with bits dropping off, or not working properly. I love my trips to Ticehurst. Perhaps I’ll look for some buildings next time I’m there. It’s a lovely drive down there and I’m not always sure Richard will even be open. Even that adds to the magic.

    @PaulinesPastimes Před 2 lety

    The layout is looking really good and look forward to seeing it progress. I especially like the station precinct and also the hedge and cutting in front of the back scene, really adds to the illusion of depth. The loco is very good, I have admired them for some time. You mentioned the expense and it is getting worse. The postage from the UK to Australia has gone up even more and makes purchasing stupidly expensive. There are some sellers in Australia who profiteer from this. With the postage much lower within Aus, they inflate the item price to make more money, and it ends up costing almost as much as buying the same item from the UK. Talk about exploitation. Sorry, a rant 😄
