Helldivers 2 - Patching Out The Fun?

  • Hello and welcome back!
    In this video, I figured I'd air some of my frustration with the recent goings-on with Helldivers 2. I thought about making a video about the PSN debacle, but I think other people did it better. Then I thought about talking about the recent warbond frustrations, but didn't know where to start. In the end, I ranted out this video while walking my dog and hanging out at the dog park.
    Whether you like it or dislike it, I'd be happy to hear your thoughts!

    I wish they would buff up the garbage instead of nerfing everything down to it's level

      They are though...
      Honestly they shoulda just buffed bad guns and buff enemy hp and armor. End result is the same except people wouldn't be butt hurt about nerfed guns, even though it is actually a nerf

    Yea i wish they go the titanfall 2 route. When everything is OP, nothing is.
    Also give the exosuite a sword

    id argue the old eruptor was great for the game cus it gave you the freedom to run the heavy mg, the stalwart or the regular mg as a primary instead. weapons that are fun to use but lose their usefulness when compared to other support weapons.

    one does not need to know "how to make/create stuff" in order to give insightful feedback as a user... this seems to be a very widespread misconception that has been around since forever it seems... (tho, having the knowledge and/or expertise may improve your experience as a user)
    I'm an engineer and also a designer, and can guarantee w/ 100% of confidence that user will always have opinions and feedback regarding any give product.. most times, they'll not necessarily understand why, nor will know how to fix any issues they have, but even more importantly: many people don't necessarily the mechanisms behind things they like either (I know this sounds patronizing, but believe me, there are people who specialize in studying this)
    main issue w/ arrowhead's approach is 2 fold: Helldivers2 is not a "regular" multiplayer game but they seem to be "balancing" it as most other multiplayer games do (competitive/meta tropes), and 2nd, they change the balancing too often and too broadly and partially hidden...
    every game "needs" balancing, specially those where new items (weapons/gear/enemies) are constantly added, but I would argue that exactly because there's no competitive aspect to this game, same balancing doesn't need to be that accurate, nor constant, and above all more skewed towards "fun" rather than "fairness" or "realism"

    You’re telling me you can’t kill a Bile Titan with the cross bow? But I do agree I don’t see why they need to nerf all these weapons for a PVE game. Sure the eruptor could one shot the charger but that is because the charger is broken.

      really? i'd shot chargers multiple times in the abdomen and never once got a 1-tap

      ​@@jbmst1450legs, space between the legs and it's little mouth are it's weak points and weakest is the mouth I believe

    I really agree. After the tenderizer garbage stats I completely stopped playing the game. The gun's description is amazing but the actual stats are garbage. I don't understand why high caliber means 60 damage and light pen. Even my mum who never played a game would say a high caliber rifle must do more damage and other stuff then others.

      My first impression after looking at the Tenderizer's stats and trying it in combat: "This is just a shitty Liberator!"
      To be fair, it does seem to have almost no recoil, but that doesn't account for much when the damage and armor piercing is garbage.

      @@ShinobiNeon I wish they just realise one weapon at a time not 3 because clearly they can only make one good weapon per warbond and then the other 2 get no use or even get nurfed because like 4 guys play with it so it must be OP or something.

    (long post, tldr: enemy interaction and enemy variants FOR guns instead of over nerfing guns)
    i kinda do think every gun was good, just not for the enemies we have. if they introduced enemy variants that were weak/strong to different types of weapons then we'd be swell. imagine dropping with stalwart, eats, napalm, and a 500, just to spawn into a map that has fire resistant bugs, or heavy armored enemies with weakspots that do way more damage than what the regular enemies take but theyre smaller targets (like the sheild dudes in bots). if you happened to bring a sniper or dominator those enemies are a cake walk, but if you bring a sub machine gun your probably gonna be on mob duty.
    this would make going solo challenging as you only have your one loadout. no buddies less stategems to fight whatever variant is set to spawn
    waaay better then the very underwhelming weather affects that just make you play in a misty void, or dodge fire (woooow) or the stupid planet modifers that really only make the game less fun.
    i honestly think their enemy design outclasses their gun design by /LEAGUES/ and they're enemy philosophy is that no enemy is op, its the enemies teamwork thats op. hunters flanking you while your focusing on a charger, or a charger bashing you while your trying to kill a bilte titan, these are the fun situations that should be focused more on i think.

    yeah, tried out the tenderizer. took two and a half mags to take down one of the four brood commanders coming at me. thats not "balanced" which sucks, because it looks really cool and i want to use it.

    I agree, I have like 12 guns and I only use one of them like what the fuck. So many of the guns just suck or chew through ammo making them useless

    Sometimes you have that 1 gun thats above all else, nerfing that 1 gun makes more sense then buffing everthing else.
    However, the way they did it with the railgun ruined it until the buffed it to a mediocre level.
    Its should be simple, nerf the weapon in a way that keeps its core strenght while bringing it in line with other weapons. Increasing the charge up time for the railgun would have been much better imo. The weapon would have been much more of a "space musket" if it was still damaging yet slow shooting.
    Now same thing with the eruptor. Its supposed to be a bolt action grenade launcher, while not even beeing that good before the nerf. Now its just a slow shooting, low capacity jar 5 dominator with neglegable aoe.

    While I don't understand the game well enough to understand the balancing issues for the guns you're referring to here to have a valid opinion on it (I've only got about 50 hours in game), they drastically need to fix the horrendous networking issues the game has. Constant disconnects, bad error messages and hand offs, etc. Part of that is because of allowing the game to be peer hosted, rather than just having a bunch of servers, but regardless of the why, the ultimate outcome is about 1/5 games results in some kind of disconnect for me. There appears to be no rhyme or reason to it, other than restarting the client will sometimes help it happen less often, but that seems more placebo than anything. There's also a lot of quality of life features missing from the game, such as just simple messaging to better communicate when other players are disconnecting, joining/loading/etc. The chat feature is also pretty meh (and yeah I know everyone uses mics, but it still sucks), for example you can't chat on the victory screen once the pelican has reached a certain point in the animation....why? Why can't you chat? That's dumb. Reporting feature is also pretty bad and needs to be better for a game of this size. It also seems weird that warbond progression costs more and more medals, but the equipment isn't necessarily better. It would be better to have it be more of section of trees (such as a skill tree), where you spend warbonds to buy into the style of play/equipment you want and then buy the extra ones you're not as interested in later so you can try new loadouts/styles of play when you have extra medals etc.

    I understand how you feel because this game is not competitive, but in a game that has nine difficulties, The highest one shouldn't be something that's easy and able to complete without issue.
    I like challenging my games, And certain weapons are too strong and viable for what they are. The nerfs are not there to punish good weapons, they're to add difficulty back to the game.

      You're right. I don't want 9s to be easy, I want them to be hard. But I don't want the difficulty tied to the usefulness/uselessness of the guns. Throw twice as many bugs/bots at me. Cut the mission time in half. Give me less stims.
      But don't touch my guns.

      Do I understand your logic and don't necessarily disagree, but, I do think you're conflating things a bit... For one, since launch no gun has been OP, and 2nd tho this game is not particularly hard (by comparison) helldive(9) hasn't ever been "easy"...

      @@RoosterRampagei don't know the suggestions would necessarily make the game more fun, difficulty for the sake of it tends to not feel as fun... Difficulty also is very subjective, some people will always struggle, some will always raise above... But one thing is certain, the more you play the more experience and skills you tend to have thus perceived difficulty goes down and this a natural progression that is undermined by arbitrary modifiers...

    There are people annoyed at the "nerfed guns make game bad", me included for a reason. You mentioned that the game isn't competitive so why care about balance? Here is the reason, for some people it's about the challenge that makes the game fun. I want guns nerfed because if they weren't, the game would not be as hard and fun as it is now. Now maybe to sell it better, they could have buffed weaker weapons and buffed enemy hp and armor to make the weapons that was going to be nerfed essentially do the same thing. For example, consider a weapon that did 10 dps and an enemy had 100 hp. Instead of nerfing the weapon to 5 dps, they could instead increase enemy hp to 200. You would have the exact same gameplay except you don't have people being butthurt about the nerf. But do you see how people might think the opposite? If you want my honest take, "suicide" difficulty should be stupidly hard (it's called suicide for a reason).

      @@Chaunwilkerson which is why you also buff the weaker guns too. Basically instead of nerfing strong guns, just buff everything else so that the strong guns are essentially nerfed.

    Never understood why people nurf pve games its literally us vs the pc those things make it fun like i dont want to play a game that they force difficulty on by just over powering the enimes and nurfing me into the ground thats why their player count dropped people are over it

    It's the new monetization method. Sell cheap shit, let players play with it for a short time then nerf it.
    That way it's easier for them to sell new cheap shit.

    I think you guys are missing the point of difficulty if you are struggling on level 9 without using busted meta kits then just lower the difficulty

      I don't really understand your comment. Balance issues have been a thing since the game was introduced, and they just keep making it worse with each update. If the issue still persists, I don't see a problem with making a video about it. It's far from a dead horse.
