- The Norfolk Railway Station that Refused to Die #disused #abandoned #railway
In this Disused Railway Walk Video i continue my journey through Norfolk along the line from Norwich City Station. Picking up from where i left of at Lenwade, i visit Whitwell & Reepham Statio and the little Heritage & Preservation Society.
From there i push on towards the Themelthorpe Curve.

We really enjoyed this, thank you.
The railway are desperate to expand towards Lenwade, but are being held back because ironically, they can't get permission to lay track on the original trackbed, partly because it's now used by horse riders!
I think the local Council are missing a golden opportunity to increase tourism to the area here.
If anyone is interested in the history of the Midland and Great Northern Joint Railway, may I point them towards the M&GN Circle. Founded just after the line closed in 1959, we have been researching and recording it ever since.
CZcams don't like website links, but Google will find us quite easily. Thank you.
The closure of the various railways in Norfolk put the county back 100 years, funny sort of progress!
I've watched these in the wrong order, but I've thoroughly enjoyed ot Ant. It is great that the volunteers are keeping history alive. Thanks for sharing.
The bridge in the field where the two railways crossed at themelthorpe and old boy I worked with used to plough it and said even years later it would stop the tractor because of the hard ground.
There is a few M&GN Boundary markers near Lenwade station the rail type ones.Love the blog well done for a great upload. The original station at Aylsham where the Bure valley railway is now the sheds were demolished by Fred dibnah in the late eighties.County school station is another good and well preserved station.
Lovely, thank you. Hits both my loves - old trains and Norfolk!
Thanks Angela 😁
We holiday in Norfolk every year and never realised this railway was there......This will be on our visit list ..Thanks for the excellent upload
It is stunning ! Cycling is encouraged on the path and the surface is good, so maybe hire bikes (you would get to see more of it !) Plenty of refreshment options enroute. Reepham is a pretty village and recommended. Hope you get to enjoy it soon !
🤞The heritage railway manages to bring back some magic of the line with that 7 mile trackbed. Thank you for sharing another really interesting video.
Went to Norfolk last summer I went on a lovely preserved railway between Holt and sheringham, lovely place
Welcome back to Norfolk and on my birthday too! Had a ride in one of the wagons last year it is a great little hidden gem, didn't realise they were planning on connecting the two Reepham stations with track again, would be lovely to see. Look forward to you completing the Marriots way to Aylsham. Be ace if you could get over to County School Station too one day that's another hidden gem well worth going to. (Broom Green to N Elmham with County School in the middle is a fabulous walk with lots to explore)
A great historical video. Very interesting and informative. Well done sir. 👍🚂
Another superb and very interesting video. Love the preserved Railway with all its various stock. Love the rural ness of the lines, and how they cris crossed the countryside.
Glad you enjoyed it nick thanks very much
What a beautiful place. Outstanding scenery on your walk. Filming amazing. Great explore. Your enthusiasm draws us in. Loved the before and after photos as well. Another fabulous video. Well done Ant. Thank you.
Another cracking video Ant, i biked to Whitwell last Sunday, and yes it is a lovely little station . Looking foreward to the next one .
Thanks very much Alan. Part 4 is almost ready 😊
some picturesque views and a lovely piece of history of a once great railway well done for sharing xx
Thanks Jan I hope you are well 😊
There are some great pubs along the route. Drayton Red Lion and the Parson Woodforde at Attlebridge to name two I frequent. Great video!
A pint of Wherry at the Parson Woodford:
If only I didn't live 250 miles away...
Thank you for another excellent video.
Very kind thank you ☺️
Thank you for the video Ant, and WOW what a video it was, amazing, cheers, Pete.👍
Lovely video Ant. We have nearly done all Marriots Way on our push bikes. The last time we called at Whitwell & Reepham Station for a snack, they were hiring out the room for weddings etc. We will be calling again in September when we go for our hols.
Really looking forward to your next one.
Ignore the Numpty who mentioned your accent, they need to get a life.
I hope you have company when you're producing all this great content for us.
Brilliant video Ant. My neck of the woods, walked it many times and the Whitwell and Reepham railway is well worth the visit. On the opening photos of your video I think the 4th photo is of Aylsham GE station (now demolished and base of the Bure Valley railway) not the M&GN one.
The signalbox at Whitwell and Reepham is not the original but a recent replica. I took a photo of the Thelmelthorpe curve a few weeks after the last train (a weed killing train ) ran over the curve and before track lifting back in 1983.
Happy to send to you to use. Cant wait for the next instalment (sorry about the Norfolk gales, not many hills to stop it)
Whitwell Station,my neck of the woods, they have a bike night there every Friday, 500 plus bikers come from all over East Anglia, Cafe has a licenced bar and serve good value for money food.
@@Paul_Wheller_with_an_h Paul do the bikes meet there all year round? We are next down in october. Hubby is a retired biker (ill health) and he would love to see all the bikes
@w.dossett3332 yes, the place is open all year, but the number of bikes dwindle as it gets colder. If we have a warm October there should still be a turnout.
@@Paul_Wheller_with_an_h thanks paul, I thought it would be like that. Fingers crossed for a warm october then. We will come for food anyway
Another fantastic video brought back memories I made and fitted the engine shed doors and windows along with other fixtures and fittings with my colleagues at reepham top man made my day 👍👍🍦
Another well documented and very informative video Ant 👍🏻always a pleasure to watch and I had no idea the preservation society existed there,(I did notice one of our secondary delivery trucks delivering beer from the Ariel footage ) so it must be licensed…definitely going to have to visit..looking forward to the next one now.
Shame that whoever erected that signal got it so wrong! It's an upper quadrant home signal but has been fitted as a lower quadrant one. Mounted like that the lamp would be showing through the red glass in the "clear" position and through the green glass in the "danger" position 😮
Lovely green walk and great to see the splendid restoration work by the preservation society at Whitwell. Thank you.
Thanks very much for watching Malcolm
Fascinating vid Ant , is amazing how the lines in this area are relatively unspoiled due to the lack of urban sprawl .
Looking forward to the next one .
It's good to see (when walking / cycling along disused Railway Lines) Clues to it past like Signals, Stations, Level Crossing Gates etc - A nod to the past 😉😊🚂🚂🚂
Great video as usual
Thanks very much David
Another great little wander, always wondered if there was any sign of that curve left today, thanks for the dronage to see how it fitted in. Armchair booked for next part👍👍👍👍👍
Nice to see a 4CEP coach from the SR lurking behind the brake van :)
Travelled over a lot of the M&GNR lines as a boy. Sadly most of the M&GNR system went for good around 1959.
I've cycled some of the route of Marriotts Way last summer and hope to do some more in September if all goes to plan.
An awful lot of work will be needed to re-lay those 7 miles of track with 88 lengths of 60ft rails and 24 sleepers to each length plus a foot depth of ballast! An awesome amount of cash and a lot of hard work too.
It would be a great little journey from Whitwell and Reepham to Reepham!
Thanks for the interesting video, specially for the look at the bridges and culverts on the route which you miss unless you stop to see them.
The Ruston locomotive shown at 20:00 looks like the one saved from scrap by the LMM CZcams channel. 😎
There are two of his locos here ! and you can see many of the locos run on Lauries latest videos, Yes LMM stuff that works !? lol
@@simlife2995actually, there are four!
@@Retirement_LifeHe has 4 engines? I knew of the "scrap" ruston but what is the other one?
@@yuraku123zhe there is a Ruston 48 in our engine shed having the water pump repaired. There is the Ruston 165 in the yard. There is another Ruston 48 in bits in the yard and a Whickham Trolley in bits in the yard also. Seems like Lawrie wants to take over!
nice to see back in Norfolk. I have ridden along there long before Whitwell was restored
Nice one i hope you enjoy the video
Another good vid ant 👌, interesting place that Whitwell, Reepham.
Thanks for watching Matt
Contrast Norfolk's attitude to these routes and how they are preserved and re-purposed for the benefit of all to enjoy, compared to Cambridgeshire where over many years questionable practices and attitudes were rife. The result, well very few amenities such as this live on today, a handful of rich (perhaps public servants who knows or could prove) people of course. We need them now, but no inquiries would ever be made and nobody brought to account. Excellent video, looking forward to the next one.
I think you forgot to mention they've a bar inside Whitwell station too 🍻🍺
Great video Ant, that bridge 270 maybe the original deck as the M&GN were pioneers in cast concrete
Themelthorpe was 10mph similar to Syston in your area. The track between Foulsham and Reepham was lifted after closure in 1952 and I believe the land sold off. BR had to re buy the land and relay the track as far as Themelthorpe
Cheers Russ
Very interesting..well done
Thanks for watching Mike
Agecroft No 3 steam engine seen at 20.14 , I think this must have come from Agecroft collery Manchester which has closed down a long time ago.
❤❤❤❤

😊
They built a curve at Themelthorpe so freight trains didn't have to go all the way via Sheringham ! This was only to get freight 2 miles from Norwich Thorpe to the MG&N good yard on the west side of the city !! Later the freight trains only went to Lenwade ! Not a lot of people know that !
I read a really interesting article in the EDP last month saying Norwich City and Thorpe stations were nearly linked in the late 1800s early 1900s a couple of plans one involving a 2500 yard tunnel!! and another a viaduct near Pulls Ferry! Plus Central Stations for both plans. The Dean of Norwich Cathedral objected but the council were all for it at the time.
Wouldn't the muddle and go nowhere make a lovely 150mile heritage railway network.
The image at 3:00 looks like prefab bits for the post war public housing programs on the rail flatcars.
Thanks Ant.😂
Laurance goes loco owns 2 locos here, that grey Rushton is on is youtube channel
Is this going to be part of the loop programme?
Did you go to Wolverton defo worth a visit. You probably have 🤷♂️
Village names in Norfolk always sound to me as though they've been made up by writers of The Archers.
F1RST.
:)
Ok...... I really like your videos: excellent quality, always informative and very interesting: apart from one thing.... your voice.
I have to watch with the sound off and the subtitles on..... and it's hiarious to see what the subtitles make of the way you
prounounce some words. I mean, Femelforpe........ really? If you have some sort of genuine speech impediment/disability then
I humbly apologise but if it's just a lazy local accent then do yourself a favour and invest in some elocution lessons PLEASE!?
Btw...... to show my good faith I've just subscribed. Very best wishes to you anyway!
Yep I have hearing issues. I hope this helps.
As a Norfolk native, the pronunciation of Themelthorpe sounded fine to me. Pay the pronunciation police no mind, Norfolk is full of places where the name sounds nothing like it is written.
@@IanM1 thanks very much Ian. 😊
I have never had any trouble with understanding your narration , and would not have guessed you had any hearing issues . Keep doing what you do best , you have a natural ability to be informative and interesting and this was a great example of good quality entertainment.
@@helenangell4443 Very kind Helen thanks very much 😊
