I saw a rig rundown with Nita Strauss that is changing how I look at modelers. She said that if you spend your time trying to get the model of a JCM 800 to sound exactly like a JCM 800, you’ll never get there, and you’ll just make yourself crazy and be disappointed with your sound. Instead, just find a sound you like, and don’t worry about what it’s supposed to sound like, just get the most out of how it sounds.

This is 100% how I feel about some of the content on That Pedal Show. Every once in a while they’ll get gear claiming to do the same thing as the original. Often times these products do a really good job, but they always realize it’s not the same thing by the end. Duh! A “not a JCM 800” or [whatever piece of gear your thinking of] will always not be the thing you’re wanting it to be.
I wish these demos would focus more on the pros and cons of the units instead of comparing to the original pieces of gear they are supposed to emulate.

Ironically, there's something in tube distortion that I don't like. A high end crackle or sizzle. Unfortunately all modellers add that in for the sake of authenticity.

    • @indagdnm

She's totally right. In the end if it's a usable sound that you like that's all that matters. I have been a pro guitarists for 30 years and I have guitars that I know I love and yet in one or two live venues they just didn't sound good. So now I just listen and tweak things until the sound is something I can use.

I sold my iridium and bought the ir200. Because the boss has an FX loop, extra foot switch option to boost solos and because it can be used as sound card device. The clean sounds are more varied too.

I would like to see a unit from Roland with Cab IR's and EFX only - for use with Preamp outs from Amps / Tube guitar Preamps etc . asba professional studio device with great reverbs and EFX and the ability to use 2 IRs simultaneously in parallel [ left and right with pan control ] OR in SERIES - because two IR's in series give additional filtering and smoothness which is needed sometimes.

I bought the iridium and started seeing all these comparisons to the ir200
I promptly exchanged it for the Boss and wow it’s fantastic! There’s nothing wrong with either one, but Boss offers a lot more for roughly the same price. I never thought I’d be able to get a live amp sound from my PA like I’m now getting. I love my amps, but for smaller rooms and/or when you need lower stage volume it’s the perfect solution for someone like me who’s heavily invested in pedals; making a kemper or Helix complete overkill. And I haven’t even begun to wrap my mind around all the ir’s and recording capabilities!

I use emulated sound in churches to FOH with my Bass. The main trick is using a Active DI to boost the signal to the board after you dial in your tone in you pedal. Sending a hot signal to the board help to get that moving air feeling that the amp produce. Also use a FRFR speaker combine with the FOH tone do wonders.

yes but you can't insert the reverb where it belongs with the iridium, in between the amp and cab. with the boss you can. also iridium does not have the option to combine different amps and cabs for two different stereo outputs. you're stuck with the same output L and R.

I’ve tried them all, all the latest floor modellers thinking I could replace my Marshall valve amp by plugging one of these digital boxes into a powered cab or pa. Unfortunately, they all suffer from the same thing when you turn up the gain ,a thin and buzzy sound that you just can’t dial out. I fell for the hype and bought a few of them but they are now collecting dust. On a positive note thought I would try just once more and bought a secondhand Kemper .Loaded it with professionally made profiles and haven’t looked back, nothing comes close for feel and sound, it’s not perfect but it’s the closest yet and it’s nearly 10 years old. Pete nailed it when he said they don’t really sound like the real thing, bravo for your honesty.

I owned the Iridium, returned it after about 7 days of trying to use it with my DAW, the noise was terrible 😞 so I returned it. I only liked one amp and cab sound sound that was usable with pedals. At $497 CDN you are better off finding a lunch box tube amp and use that with pedals

The Iridium has a fuller tone, which is fine for practice on your own, but is that really what you want with a band, or in the context of a mix? Maybe not. But, of course, you could EQ it out.

This is so difficult. I think Iridium sounds great, but as a tool for recording quickly and conveniently in a home setting, the IR200 has a lot going for it. It has a broader range of tone, and as for those scratchy presets, I just wouldn't use them. The effects loop is an important addition (eg for adding a spring reverb where it's meant to be - before the cab). And I'd def get a lot of use out of those bass amp models. I also think people forget what a mic'd amp actually sounds and feels like over control room monitors - those crapping on the Boss here might find that it's much closer to that experience than they realise. On the other hand, i just want to eat those Iridium sounds up. I'd have to sit down for a couple of hours and compare them side-by-side before making a decision. Or just hang on in the hope that Strymon have a more versatile, programmable modeller on the way. They'd be crazy not to have one in development, the question is how long you would be prepared to wait for a product that may never arrive?

I think you have to try these modelors or amp in a box pedals with a powered monitor (wedge) . Not studio monitors. Play them trough a powered p.a. monitor against a fender hot rod deluxe . So the feel thing and volume is there in both sitations. Put some room mics around them so we could get an impression on how it sounds and feels . It would be very interesting. Some people buy these units for silent recording or an ampless situation but there are a lot of players that want that volume and ampfeel in the room but don't want the hassles / problems of a tube amp or the "one sound" they give you . There are many video's of thes modelors straight trough an interface but there are no video's with the modelors / amp boxes through powered wedges. Please , make some sort of a video. Thanks, Mike

The way to fairly compare these modellers to amps is to run the amps into the Ox Box or something (when comparing in person, so the experience is similar). The presets of modellers generally always include the signal flow from the amp, speaker, mic, mic pres and mixer etc. What you hear in DAW using a model is meant to be similar to what you would hear in a studio control room when the amp is miked up in an iso booth. That is never going to sound like being in front of a cranked amp. I facepalm when people like Pete say it is not pushing air like an amp. He should know better.

The other parts of the device like connections, an fx loop and midi are great though and all of the cab sims should be looking to have these on their devices.
The one point that I’d note is that the ir-200 can’t separate amps and IRs like the iridium or a two notes cab m plus so you can’t use just one or the other on it’s own. That’s a bit of a deal breaker for my situation.
