In the 1920s the economy is flourishing in the Dutch East Indies in , the profits are enormous, especially at the extensive plantations on Sumatra. That's where Hans Goedkoop's grandfather starts his career as a young lieutenant in the colonial army. The KNIL was also deployed during the first major political uprising in the colony. The local population no longer accepts the oppression by the Dutch authorities. Hans learns how Indonesian doctors want to cure their country of the disease called colonialism. He also visits the Ombilin coal mines, where forced labor was common. What did colonialism look like in practice?

My life path is indeed a bit similar to one of my great-grandfather "Hatta" Republic of Indonesia's first vice president from Bukittinggi, who has signed the independence agreement of Indonesia in The Hague The Netherlands (not by Soekarno as he's only an orator), my maternal family kingdoms region, birth place of my maternal family especially my great grandparents from mother side and my beloved belated Mother passed away in Bantam Java my birth place.
Me and Hatta we finished Elementary school faster than the average at just age 11 then international private boarding school then to The Netherlands.
And indeed we're a fluent multilingual including Dutch, Arabic, and so on aside Indonesian native languages.
