I've always thought that if someone is willing to go to harmful lengths to "get attention", they're probably dealing with some pretty heavy stuff. Even if they're not depressed or anything, there's probably something going on.

      TW: mentions of self harm
I totally agree, girls at school used to claim that anyone who self harms only does it for attention and my response has always been "then give it to them!!!"
If someone is so desperate to get attention that they are physically hurting themselves and they feel they have no other way to reach out, then pay attention to them and hear what they have to say.
Oddly though, the girls who said that at my school ended up self harming, so I do look back and wonder if they were trying to make it more obvious that they needed help, but 13 year old me didn't know enough about the world to understand, I was trying to deal with my own stuff

@@SkywardGeek That's a big problem we can have(and by"we"I totally mean"me")...it's easier to empathize with fictional characters or people you only hear being mentioned than with people we actually know in real life because fictions are _built_ to make you empathize and you usually see _yourself_ in some characters or you get a crush on them etc so it's easy to feel sorry or worried for them if something bad happens(also because you can often see the full story so you know *for sure* something bad it's happening to them, you don't really have to guess)while with"real people"we tend to _actually_ see them as"someone else",someone who we can _choose_ to care _or_ not.

as someone with autism, I actually find emojis very very helpful. It's hard for me to sense tone in someone's message so having a happy face or something really helps. Might be interesting to analyse some scenes from Umbrella Academy. All of the characters are pretty messed up and traumatised because of their father's treatment of them but how that manifests itself I feel is different in each sibling. There's four instances in season 1 where we see PTSD flashbacks (not all experienced by the one character either, we see one character have one and another have three). Also the character Klaus is a drug addict who we see get sober and then relapse but only with alcohol (which I find interesting because other characters don't seem as bothered by him drinking as they are by him using other substances despite all of it being rooted in addiction). There are no therapy scenes but they all could definitely use therapy (one character does mention having seen someone in the past though).
Edit: Actually I've just remembered in season a character has to do court ordered therapy before she can see her child. Again though it is just mentioned not seen.

RE: your discussion of black & white thinking vs. "shades of grey"
For context, I'm on the ASD spectrum (also the ace spectrum, but that's not relevant), and I am often described as being very black and white. Which I think is, ironically, a very reductive description of me. I am aware that nobody, or no thing, is entirely black or white. Even Hitler loved dogs. But when I'm deciding whether to spend my finite time and energy on someone or something, I have to decide if that person or thing is worth it. So an entirely grey person still gets a binary amount of my energy, either some energy or none. So I look at the person as an aggregate of their various attributes.
So when I say that XYZ person, or ABC situation is "bad" and I'm done with it. That's not because it's entirely good or bad.... it's because it's 50.1% bad or more, while being entirely grey. Just because I don't enumerate a person's good qualities, doesn't mean I'm not thinking of them. It just means I've decided they aren't sufficient, and I'm summarizing my decision matrix for brevity.

I attended a really interesting training day recently about working with people who have personality disorders, and this group of people are often labelled as attention seeking. The trainer was able to really empathetically get us to think about what attention seeking behaviour is, and to look at what someone is telling us they need from it, and use it as a form of communication and understanding rather than see it as a negative. It's really helped me in my day to day practice as a nurse to reframe my opinion and understanding of the person's actions and behaviours in a much more helpful way.

Talking about controlling emotions reminds me of my mom & her 5 siblings. They were all traumatized by a physically & emotionally abusive dad with psychological issues & alcoholism resulting from his schizophrenia which he refused to get help for. It took a long time for my grandma to get support in leaving him & so depending on their age & basic personality they all handled their reactions to his abuse differently even through adulthood. One of the reactions was very obviously pushing down their own anger because they didn't want to be compared to him if they let it out. Also the older ones were told to "be strong" because the younger ones needed them, & so they sometimes felt unheard about how they were hurting & scared.

i think we have adequate insight of her thought pattern and personality. she said it herself, she's obsessive. it's the obsession, challenge and curiosity, that drive Wednesday the way she is. that's probably why she good at everything, and that's why she start to feel connection to people that can match her energy. AND she knows how society work and how it fails everyone especially minority like her and outcasts, so she's definitely not afraid of rejection and she's clearly not attention seeking.
plus, it's Wednesday who always present herself as who she is, and people always in denial or try to justify her behaviors based on society value (that fails someone like her), AGAIN societal peer pressure and they're delusional.

I later realized he got mixed up between my Asperger's inability to identify the emotions of others with the psychopaths lack of empathy with the emotions of others. Unlike a psychopath I have a very strong sense of justice and fair play, it just isn't based in empathy. Rather it's based on a sense that some things are the wrong way to do things while others are the right way to do things.

while its called a "court order" its almost always part of a plea agreement, so, in a technical sense, the patient has to agree to going and participating. by putting it in a court order, it also helps with funding, as the state takes on the burden of coast if it orders such. and with the American health care system, that's a big expense to shoulder otherwise.

When I asked for mega doses of Thiamine and Vitamin C the shrink, lied to me and said he found it worked better by adding a drug. He put me on a super downer. When I started forgetting to take it because of the drug itself. I realized what happened and walked away from shrinks. Plus the one thing I learned from them was I had to fix myself.

There is so much to talk about, unhealthy family dynamics, grief, anxiety, autism, queer coming of age, and the main character has some important scenes with his therapist in season 2. I think it’s perfect for your channel and it’s also just a really good show.

Always gets a little special when it comes to fictional characters, such as Wednesday.
As myself I have Asperger's, I can in a way, partially relate to such solitary individuals. Spoiler further down for those who haven't seen the last episode of Wednesday.
The problem is often that they end up wanting social company, which is tiresome to me. Yes, I have friends, but groups of more than 3 are too much.
So, even though Mr. Spock is exaggerated, it is a fictional character that I can relate to.
As an Asperger, I do not see people as either good or bad, but individuals who perform actions that can be considered good or bad (evil) actions. But that a human is not his actions.
Jenna Ortega makes a good Wednesday. She rarely blinks, but at the psychologist she does. There are also micro-expressions, and small changes in the face when there is something she doesn't like.

Wednesday may or may not be on the spectrum, but she is clearly suffering from early trauma. I suspect there is more to the scorpion story as the character does not share well, and she certainly left out what she did to the boys in retaliation--and you know she did something. Hugs are sometimes triggering to non-neurotypical people, but they can also be triggering to trauma victims. Of course, it can be a bit of both. Human behavior is complex, and there is a lot to unpack in what the writers did with Wednesday's character, which is what made the show so good.

The real question isn't what bad hypothesis have we rejected. The question is which of today's assumptions are completely errant and harmful that we don't know about. It's a mistake to believe that we are so much smarter than those that came before us. Every society has its blind spots.

I don’t know if I’m the only one who thinks this, but while watching Wednesday I thought she was aro/ace. turns out I was wrong. I wish they kept that since Wednesday is very adamant about not getting married or having a family and I felt like they made her say that in the show to make her contradict herself later.

Wednesday isn't "resistant" to the therapist, she likely simply thinks it's a waste of time. That this "authority figure" doesn't actually hold any authority. That submission isn't "weakness", but rather that it's illogical. "Resistance" is language from a one-side perspective. She doesn't want control, she doesn't wish to be oppressed.
The topic of black & white thinking was directed at the revelations of facts from two sources. Where there is acknowledgment that people will largely believe one or the other. That any nuance of gray DOES often get lost. It's acknowledged often that victors define history. And in such matters, you often accept a premise or don't, there isn't any gray. The discussion wasn't about "people", it's about the revelation of events and reality.
I'd also argue there is a difference between rationalization, and rationalization as a defense mechanism. This entire video is "rationalization". That doesn't make it so that you are deploying a defense mechanism.

I know it's not good for me but it's soooo alluring. For example, while watching this video I wanted to declare that every single psychology professional who was active in the era when harmful hypotheses like "refrigerator mother" were common and yet failed to see through them was a bad person.

I have to say, once one begins to think about it human - and thus societal - coping mechanisms can be at times rather cruel, for example the segregation and sequestration of people away from “normals” because “normals” either cannot or cannot be bothered to deal with the unusual when it is apparently much more convenient to just “out of sight out of mind” them, I guess.
This drive for “efficiency” I guess we could call it may have helped us along but it also made us sacrifice parts of us and quite willingly so…
