I've got a 2001 Silverado that I need to do this to. When making Formica countertops, I learned to place some supports across the subsurface to keep the mica from falling onto it. I used some 1/2" PVC pipe for supports. This should allow you to fold the glued material into place above the backer and rub it down little by little and pull out the supports as you work your way to the end. Looks like your method worked fine but I tend to overdo things a little when it comes to things I don't do often.
Can we buy the entire headliner already covered? Seems they can't be all that expensive since they are just a card board like material. Plus they made millions of them. Someone surely still has the mold.

Nice job and thanks for the heads up about the handles. It was interesting to watch some one else struggle with "you only get one shot" glue.

Sir you should of done the middle first then 5 inches at a time little by little you got carry away there by gluing the hole half that’s a big no no
