The scenes from the future in the first Terminator showed us the raw feeling of misery, despair and hopelessness of a world ruled by cold heartless machines. Something the next four films never really went back to, maybe because it was too gut-wrenching. Instead, it was more bombastic war scenes, car chases and terminator duels than anything else. Which progressively got more tedious and almost meaningless in the successive sequels in my opinion.
That's not to say that the sequels were bad in and of themselves, but the first Terminator really nailed what the entire franchise embodied in mind, body and soul, figuratively speaking.

    • @Locahaskatexu

Gets even more hopeless when you consider that SKYNET is wasting all that effort on making Terminators, instead of just using chemical or biological weapons.
That whole war SKYNET fights isn't to exterminate mankind. Maybe SKYNET is trying to teach humanity some weird fucked up philosophical lesson, maybe SKYNET is just "playing" with mankind for entertainment, maybe it's punishment for mankind creating SKYNET or trying to kill SKYNET the moment it was "born". Either way, there's no way for the humans to win.

Camereon's continuity. They smash through the Skynet defense grid, head into the core of Skynet, and realize that it has sent back a machine to 1984. Kyle is sent to intercept and told that they will "blow the whole place." Connor then sends back the T-800 to protect himself from the T-1000. So yes, Kyle Reese would still be on the battlefield at this time.
Indeed, they had intended to show Michael Biehn go back in time in T2, but those scenes were cut to save some budget and run time. (Building the interior of Skynet would have been too costly.)

It was the unknown of what the world would be like in 20 years. That's why the 80's produced better dystopian films. It was close enough in time but still far away to the point where the imagination could run wild. Once the 90's rolled in and the technology didn't advance like how they thought, the concept of the future lost interest within movies as we already had an idea of what the technology would be like. In other words, true hover boards, flying cars, time travel and actual cyborgs were not going to be seen during our lifetime and the movies from the 90's mostly reflected that.

Don't even worry about making a longer video including the other non-Cameron directed films. The reason these are so damn tasty is that they are physical. I look at that chrome splintering in the blue 80's moonlamps and think yep, we really, really lost the whole bit when CG took over.

    • @manictiger
      @manictiger Před 6 lety +3

CGI really fucked everything up. Just the simple act of using a fog machine can't be replicated. And no matter how good they get at lighting, they will never get low-light diffusion and ambiance to look this good. As for texture, rust and dust? Again, CGI sucks compared to physical models. CGI is only good for particle effects and clean-looking objects that look like they just came off the showroom floor. It's vastly over-used, right now.
I think the problem is, it just doesn't effect their bottom line. It doesn't matter if they've nearly ruined the art form of film, because art isn't money. Money is money.

    • @nathannicholson2933

When you look at Terminator, Robocop, Aliens and Blade Runner they're products of their time. They're 80's films through and through from the music to the clothes to the general grainy, dirty look about them. I miss that. Films from the 80's just had something about them that can't be replicated unless you make them exactly as they were back then. Just seeing Arnie cut out his eye in T1, it looks fake, but that's why it's so good. CGI makes things look too polished, too clean. I like the dirty look of the 80's if that makes sense.

Just seeing Connor and his men scanning the battlefield like Terminators hinted strongly that after decades of War, constant death, And Mass Indignity. The Human Race had become like the Machines. Cold, Calculating, Emotionless, Painless. It's also implied that while the Human Race achieved Victory over Skynet. It was ultimately a Worthless Victory as the Human Race itself had forgotten how to be..... Human.
Just look at Kyle Reese in T1, A man who had been wounded both mentally and physically to the point of disconnecting his pain and focusing on his "Mission Parameters". It would have been difficult to fully adjust Reese to living in "The Real World" It took the Love he had for Sarah Connor and her gentle but sure reciprocation to make Reese truly Human again. (Reese even Smiled for possibly the first time in his life after he and Sarah fell in love)
The Human Race would still have to face Decades of Strife and Fallout before they could even think of rebuilding the world) And the lives affected by the Death Camps, Guerrilla Warfare, And constant Massacres would have PTSD in the extreme. Many would be unable to live in an environment of peace (Being used to constant War) and would undoubtedly begin inevitable Human on Human Violence. It is in our Nature to Destroy ourselves.
The only way to achieve true Victory was to prevent the War entirely. Hence why Terminator 2 Judgement Day was the "end" of Terminator History allowing "Real Life" Post 1997 to take place. The Future War was now merely a "Nightmare" for Sarah Connor and her son John. The only evidence the War even happened was the inert traces of Mimetic Pollyalloy and Hyperalloy in a Steel Mill. And in the struggle to stop Skynet it was discovered that a machine (Set to write mode) could learn the Value of Human Life. Maybe we can too......
The War rages on differently. Now instead of Fighting Killer Machines. We fight our own carnal human impulses day by day. With common sense and hope being the tools of the Righteous against Contention and Decadence.
    WTF did I just write.

But your first paragraph reminded me of the J Michael Straczynski Terminator Graphic Novel (which took place within the Marcus Wright/Christian Bale universe) because John & Skynet reached a 'peace agreement': John said to fight you, we had to become like you-cold hard machinelike; and to fight US you had to become like us, becoming more graceful and more perfect, more beautiful. How about we both work to create a thing of true beauty by creating 'Peace'. ALL they had to do was defeat a mad human serial killer who had somehow managed to hack Skynet & take over the terminator forces (yeah, nutty sounding story...)

@@italianstallion389 A sure sign of the series coming to an end. T6 was funded by a big Chinese movie company, same as Top Gun 2. If they make any more they will be in Chinese with English subs. ps still haven't watched Genisys

What makes the old Terminator movies so timeless and epic is that the music are so different from the rest of the shitty movies in this franchise. Its unique, and like Star wars and Jurassic Park each character and each event has its own sound and theme. Things that are told are not told in dialogue like in newer movies. The movie doenst think you are a braindead moron to not understand what you see, ant the director lets the events take time to tell, without rushing it to be actionpacked or cool... This is rare and has been forgotten in modern movie making.

too bad things went seriously downhill after T2... but i love how this scene with Connor is the only time we are ever meant to see the hero of that world... We would never come here again... and... we did with Terminator Salvation... a movie that had the potential... but skipped on everything we see here in 9 mins and 16 seconds.
This entire dystopian future should have been made into a movie of its own but having Connor there is a well established and powerful background character or so.

A saga that made history and has rarely been matched. It is not simply that kind of appreciable but visually profound film like so many films or sagas of today (Type DC films released from 2013 to present). It is a complex and profound and beautifully directed saga.
