Savannahs: now is always my chance to escape.
Tegus: now is my time to be held.
Gilgamesh of Summer I love your name! We named our tegu Gilgamesh LOL. He's Gil for short
Tegus: "You see the bed I made, dad?"
Savannah: "Nice head, I think I'll take it."
Tegus: Hi hi! I ride on your head and give you scritches.
Savannahs: You live only because I allow it. By my claws shall you perish, human.
All of these reasons is why I think Savannahs are better. Closest things to dragons that I can keep

Don't feel pressured to keep you savannah monitor if you dont enjoy keeping her. sure you might get hate for rehoming her but she might be better off with a different owner. this tegu seems very friendly and you might have a better chance with it.
That thing was *vicous*
I agree. She deserves to be with someone who can give her the time, space, and attention she deserves. I'm shocked that he wanted for _two years_ before even thinking to test her for parasites!
@@WobblesandBean to be fair he most likely forgot about it since most of those are wild caught so he was probably trying his hardest to get the thing to like him as well as being handled by him to first since he originally wanted to keep her on top of other things
Bonnibel hates everyone. If she was rehomed it would be back to the wild.
Wobbles and Bean i think he got her tested for parasites almost as soon as he got her, I think it’s just that the footage he used was pretty old, and I think in a video a while back he said he got her all treated and that she’s parasite free, tho I could be wrong so please don’t judge me
My friend has a tegu named Andre the Giant and he likes being rocked in our arms like a baby

I love my savanna monitor and he loves me. Savannah motors are great and they can be really nice just need to spend a lot of time with them so that you can bond otherwise they don’t know you. Have a feeding routine outside of their enclosure so they never expect food there and will never confuse you with food. They are smart but if they just don’t trust you they will try and leave. You have to kind of force your friendliness on them until they trust you. Hold them a lot. When they’re trying to bite you or being aggressive, ball up your fist so that they can’t and show it’s who’s boss. Let them try, keep your fist balled up so they can’t bit you and try to pet them. Them keep petting them firmly so they know who’s boss. Let it sense that you can crush them at anytime and their attacks dont work yet all you do I love it. They will eventually be tamed and enjoy your company. Fall asleep while you carry them like a baby and give them kisses. Savannah monitors are the coolest. And it’s even cooler that you have to bond with them so much in order to tame them. Cause if you can do that you realize how smart they really are.
Tegus are like the dream lizard. I can't wait til I have to space to keep one.
My aunt has 3 cats, two dogs, a horse and a giant tegu. Guess which one I play with the most.
yeah me too!
Meh, I guess. I've own my Tegu for the last 22 years. Tila is alright, I wouldn't recommend her to anyone.
Their young adult stage is where they can be a bit of a stinker. Tila hated eating veggies and fruit. Child would throw the worst tantums over getting a bowl of it. Like flipping over water dishes, throwing her log about. Picking up the bowl and shaking it until all the fruit fell out. Following that up with standing tall, stomping around the cage and huffing.... Ugh don't even miss those days....
22 years later with her and yeah I wouldn't get another lol.
Dylan Dibben he’s probably a red tegu
Same!! ❤
You´re doing a great job as a youtuber. I have no interest in reptiles whatsoever and I still can´t stop watching your videos.
Same! I have never owned a reptile and yet I've been bingeing all of his videos 😂
Same. Him and Snake Discovery. My 2 year old is constantly asking me to watch “Goin’ Hupin’ and Emiwee wit da baby snakes!”
Same! I'm interested in them because he makes learning about them fun but I don't want reptiles as my pets.
Me too. I recently started working somewhere with exotics so I now call the bingeing 'research' though I barely ever handle those animals. Never had much of an interest (besides thinking some wild reptiles in my mother's house were cute) but now I kind of maybe want one?
anny boom lol
Bonnibell : I hate you almost as much as I did when you first got me.
Tegu : Imma gunna mlem this mater
I remember reading that a lot of monitors only seem ‘tame’ or ‘calm’ because they’re actually just unenergised and lethargic.

We had a sav for nearly a decade and he was the most amazing pet we ever had. He roamed around the house with our cats, was incredibly friendly and super easy to handle. He'd just open his mouth and let us put the food in when we hand-fed him. He was housetrained and incredibly clever and playful. We spent a LOT of time handling him and taming him. Savs can be incredibly difficult, some of them never like being handled at all. Ours was tame like a puppy, but that doesn't mean all of them get like that. They require a ton of effort and attention. Getting tailwhipped by one can be pretty nasty. Ours only ever attacked when he was a baby and then completely stopped, but I've seen adult savs, which didn't want anyone near them at all. My point is, savannah monitors can be incredible, they can be fun, tame, even social and playful. They can also be total jerks.
Berserkerkitten how long did it take for you to be able to touch and interact with it?
I have a juvenile savannah monitor and it tail whips, hisses and bites when I try taking it out of the enclosure, I’ve had it for about 5 or six months and I try working with my sav as much as possible. Do you have any taming and trust tips?
my sav is amazing, he is chill and sweet, but id never ever recommend a sav to anyone
Dan H yeah same
Aesthetically Kenz daily handling or every other day I got a 3 year old male had him since he was 4 months old and it took me like 7 months to calm him down I handled him daily every day he would show threats puffing up hissing tail smacking once I had him in my hand it was bitting pooping more hissing and puffing I just left him do all that stuff to me pushed through his threats every day and one day I went to get him out and there was no threats no nothing like it finally clicked in his head I was a threat he’s now my best friend every nite when I walk in to the reptile room when he see me he is trying his dam best to climb outta his cage I will take him out put him on the floor and let him roam around for awhile and when he’s done he’ll climb up my pant leg and sit on my lap til I put him back and he’s trained to come when I call him name
I love that lil tegu dude. I wish you could keep him, I need lil tegu dude in my life. Forever living vicariously through CZcamsrs 😶
John Ferrari ooo another Clint fan!
He deserves to keep that Tegu 😰💕
I feel he should have mentioned that Tegus have adapted to survive in Florida as an invasive species & they r a big problem. Very important not to release an unwanted tegu outside country of origin.
Nobody should be releasing captive animals into the wild regardless.
why is it that florida is the hotspot of every invasive species on the planet
Cuan Chulainn Florida’s climate is pretty unique compared to the other states, at least south Florida/some parts of central. Its humidity and year-round high temps (we wear long sleeves if it hits 70F lol) is pretty ideal for a lot of species that wouldn’t survive the, say, drops to 40F in Georgia or the extremely dry heats in other hot states. Plus, Florida Man will do what Florida Man does.
Same reason why iguanas have made an invasion too.
You say you can't keep the tegu...but what if you sold the Savannah monitor instead...
The savanna monitor is in bad condition. And is very hard to work with. He needs to keep the monitor because it will likely harm the owner.
I have 2 tegus, one red and one chacoan. They have been the best experiences I ever had with any reptile! If a lizard could be close to a dog, tegus would be that lizard! I love EVERYTHING about my 2 tegus! They have never pooped anywhere but their cage, and I've held them for an hour and a half straight! If someone wants a monitor, get a tegu instead! You might think at the time you want a monitor, but trust me, you want a tegu!
He wants to keep that animals out of another bad home because of the big fights about their care, he doesn’t want someone to do something wrong
@@RGBSupremacy yeah, I've had my tegus for about 4 months, and they are already close to 3 ft! They've outgrown 3 Cage's! I'm building a 8ft by 4ft enclosure right now, and will let them have free range of my room. They grow faster than even most monitors I've had!
@@Sam-ed3eb good for him too, hes taking care of her and not giving up on her. Thats great!

Go herping: *is a reptile channel*
Also goherping: *rants about how his savannah monitor is horrible*😂
Lizbeth Mendieta it’s honestly a good thing, because it turns away people who aren’t capable of owning a savannah. I honestly think he needs to rehome Bonnabel though. Moreso for his mental health and wellbeing than hers. Maybe to a zoo/rescue.
if you dont rant about how horrible savannah monitors are then you are a bad reptile owner and i literally own a sav monitor and love him more than all my other reptiles, but dont ever get a savannah monitor

I have a savannah and I love him, he’s amazing, but I would never recommend one. He’s a lot of work and the more we learn about them in the wild the more we learn that we can’t really give them what they need in captivity. I don’t recommend big lizards at all but if you’re set on getting one, go with a tegu or a pre socialized water monitor.
Brandon McGarity how old is your sav?

Very informative video.Thank you Alex.
The first time I've ever heard of a tegu was Winston the tegu off Facebook. Check him out! He's a very cute and charismatic reptile
I have an argentine black and white tegu. The basking spot should be 120 degrees, not 100-110. Just a little FYI. UV bulbs also matter, some brands are much better than others. I know you said it wasnt a care video, I just wanted to point that out if any new tegu owners watches this video.
My tegu story: I went through two countries to get my tegu. I was on the waiting list for 6 months, I was the first to pick one from the clutch. He's in an enclosure that is slightly bigger than 8x4x4 (its 250x125x125cm) and has his own room. I open the enclosure when im home and hang out with him. Great animal. But, he was a demon the first 6 months, so you have to be prepared for that (I honestly wasnt), but I never gave up and now hes as sweet as they can be. I do have a video with his growth over the months on my channel (I dont post reptile videos though, it was just a 100 subs special). I will gladly help if anyone have any questions 🙂
You got unlucky if your tegu was a work full in the first 6 months. That is most definitely not the norm. 120 is the absolute max you should go for a tegus basking spot and that's pushing it. Tegus come from a tropical climate. Their natural basking temps range from 90-110. And generally they spend most of their time burrowed. UVB is without a doubt, the most important aspect for most larger reptiles. Especially for a tegu due to once again, their tropical climate. Very nice on the enclosure size.
You’re the only CZcamsr I’m thinking of buying a membership for 👍🏻 keep up the good work
Haha omg I love this guy! This has been the most enjoyable tegu video I've seen. Just love it! Thanks for the great video :)
Before I even watched this video, I already knew I loved Tegus just by the tons of research I did. Probably not getting one any time soon -- I'll be investing into a ball python way before any of that. But, Tegus just not only look cool, but they just seemed like a way better pet compared to a lot of other lizards (especially a lot of other popular monitors). Tegus also get *so huge*! *Anyway*! Fab video~ ♥
Other people with tegus: giant enclosure
Me: ok lil guy once your a year old you're officially a house lizard
I couldn't stop laughing at the clips of you handling your monitor. The calm relaxing music while you were handling the tegu with relaxed facial expressions was just a trap to get us to let our guards down. Then the music stops and we get the audio of Bonabell struggling to be free with distressed facial expressions. It was beautifully and well made.
The intro was killing me 😂😂 love the duality 😘

Just saying I had a Savannah monitor and he was DOG tame
yeah but at the end of the day would you recommend anyone owning a sav? wouldnt it be better to keep literally any other monitor species? or simply a tegu?
@@danh7805 honestly I wouldn't recommend a Savannah monitor for any one unless you have a tone of time and a free room in you house because my Savannah was huge he was at least 4 feet long and he ate a lot and needed to be held at leas 2 hours a day to go play around and explore
Have I Ever Said How Much I Love Your Channel
This Tegu is soooo chill and I've seen massive ones that are super chill
Also remember that argentinian overo tegus are more chill than bolivian red tegus. And please put them in real sun sometimes, they love sun, and walking a bit, and chilling in some stone or hot dirt. They're not snakes that can be still for a year
Snakes won't be still for a year either of you give them to room to explore, they're mostly lethargic when kept in undersized enclosures as many people do.
@@cooperolm9687 yea I know, it's an exageration, also depending on the species and individual, like ball pytons and little sand boas behaving differently. Compared to most snakes though, tegus are more active.

I'm amazed how sweet he is after a human BURNED HIM. What a good boy. Protect him. ;u;
It just goes to show how sweet and precious tegus are 😭
it was more than likely a burn from a heat source, still could be the owners fault but i doubt the previous owner directly burnt him
Dude I know a tegu that got beaten by some dumba** kids because they thought it would be cool, then he was beaten by a dude while his friend held the tegu down by the tail with his foot, poor tegu had to rip off the end of his tail to get away (the reason why they were beating him was because they thought he was a Gila monster sml)

James Headley I have an ackie, he/she is alright...no good with handling right now (it is relatively young still tho) but yeah, it’ll try to bite me when I do, but it does at least trust me to where it’ll stay out while I’m in my room.
Ive been doing a lot of research lately I really want one. Most of the time keepers really like them.
If I got a tegu, I’d buy one of the ones wild caught from florida. feels like it’s supporting a good cause
Arnica Moana I know it feels like it, but it’s actually making things a lot worse. By buying wild caught it supports more wild caught selling.. which is overall not a good thing because of the risks that come with it. I definitely would go for a captive bred animal. This applies with any animal you can get that has the ability to be bought captive bred.. If you ever do decide to get a tegu keep this in mind
Alpha Wollf wild caught from florida. where they’re invasive and being killed en masse. that doesn’t affect the market of wild caught from their native country. it takes individuals out of where they aren’t supposed to be and supports those trapping them. where is the downside?
Yeah I'd say that's one of the good exceptions for buying wild caught
GoHerping it’s probably one of the only ones I can think of worth supporting tbh, at least outside of rehab or rehab/release
Oh well, I did not know that.. thank you for telling me. I still stand by the opinion to go for captive bred animals, but I have looked into and yeah this would be a good exception I believe.. thank you for informing me of this haha. Sorry for the criticism
I love your reptiles and your videos
At the store that I work at, we've had a gold tegu for the past year and a half. She is an absolute monster and acts more like bonibel. The Savannah Monitors we've had have been relatively rude but I've been able to handle them to a point of being nice. Interesting how lizard behavior can vary so much between individuals. Loving your videos, can't wait to see the next one!

Love the intro 😂 this was a great video
I had a Savannah Monitor and he was actually a peach outside of like a 6 month span. I haven’t had reptiles for quite a while. I’m planning for a Tegu eventually! I can’t wait!
Both are extremely adorable though! Even though Bonibel is a poopster.
As a tegu owner I greatly approve of this video! Savannah Monitors are just terrible pet’s: Being wildcaught, complex, and incredibly difficult to care for. Tegus. Are just AMAZING! 10/10 great video! And 10/10 that Tegus are awesome pets! (#tegusnotsavs!)
Idk there's just something about savs that are cooler than tegus IMO mostly the buff forearms and legs and dinosaur head, most savs do tame down quite well actually it's just most of the savs on CZcams are mistreated rescues who are traumatized. They are definitely more difficult to care for though but that much more rewarding because anyone can keep a tegu healthy but not many can keep a sav healthy
Wtf is wrong with you?
Thx for the care guide

Alex I've still got 17 ghost tortles and you're just over here talking about lizards UNSUBBED
Well Afro tamed down a wild caught Tegu so it shows you their ability to be tamed.
Yeah, even wild ones tame down great as adults. I've got a formerly feral Florida tegu- she's the sweetest reptile I've ever met. If you give them space, time, patience, and good care, they tend to calm down pretty quick.
I have a friend with a tegu who used to be feral in florida and she's as tame as any caplive bred one, they tame down so well.
I love tegus. They are so charming and can be so sweet if raised right. My local reptile store has a black and white tegu who just roams around the store sometimes (he isn’t always out, but he likes to take strolls lol). He’ll literally come up to you for pats and scritches. Super beautiful and friendly like cat.
