What should we do with the 6x6 Ford Ranger?
An rb26 swap since you have a 2j and a rotary
Name it Power Ranger
@@izmaelcamilleri2029 that wold be so sick!
@@__xavier it's already red too
@@GrindHardPlumbingCo you'll have the JDM engine trilogy
The subframes are from an m151 mutt. Old jeeps with independent suspension at all 4 corners. The jeeps were deemed unsafe for road use and all but a handful were cut in half. There are old surplus places that sell parts. There is an option for a mechanical locker.
czcams.com/video/ynmAnpheKs0/video.html
at 2:56 and 6:41 in that video we get a good look at the front diff and Independent suspension of an older m151 It looks very close but not exact. it also does not show the passthrough driveline. could be a revision. maybe An M151A1 or A2 were both revisions of the suspension
@@Turkrypty M151 have the same diff front and rear. So the have pinions and yokes on both sides. So this is front end of 3 M151's. The issue is the power to the rear axle is going though the pinion and ring gear of the center.
The Mutts were in use when I was in the Army in the mid to late 70s. The guys in the motor pool disliked M-151 because they were a pain to service, they were a far cry from the Kaiser built Jeeps that had been in service for ages.
You are absolutely correct about the M151 steer axles being used in the rear of the Ranger. I have a complete M151A2 and enough spare axle pairs to build 8 more. I also own 4, 800 series 5 Ton 6X6 trucks and have plans to build a tube chassis 6X6 Mutt.
That is awesome!! Would you please name one of the surplus places near PA if you know. PLease.
I stand by my comment in this video FULLY… This is the best thing we have ever just bought!
Bead locks and lift kit.... bananas
If you can't weld the diffs, just make chains.
The rear tires dont spin as fast as fronts ? What's the hearing on them difs ?
Trucky McTruckFace. Amiright?
@@feminazislayer they're smaller diameter wheels
Obvious upgrades for this one:
• Lockers
• beadlock wheels
•self centering rear stearing
• build good looking bumpers with high approach and departure angles
• light setup
• winch, this thing would be an awesome anchor
possible bigger engine better cooling and snorkel
Lockers, self centering rear steer, beadlock rims, and maybe a few more hp would really make this 6x6 shine! Nice find! Can't wait to see whats to come
Engine swap!
this would be an awesome platform for a alaska expedition overlanding tour. Lift it, lockers, beadlocks, diesel swap, rack with a tent in the back, bigger fuel tank
I think if they go that far they're better off building their own 6X6, I don't think this thing is worth upgrading that much. Not saying it needs to be a good investment my point is that for what it costs to upgrade this thing that much they can build something better for the same amount of time/money
With a lifted trailer,also 37" monster tires,to haul toys in,and on.2 layers.You guys can do it.Like a mini car-hauler.
so basically a whole different truck entirely
Definitely beadlocks and lockers. Diesel swap... Maybe a tdi or a 4bt?
overlanding is overrated and overdone as hell
WHAT in TARNATIONS is that amazing machine!?! I love it! That's gonna be a fun little truck!
"little"
Not quite so little anymore 😂😂
I wouldn't call it little.
I painted the mismatched hood for the "Old Man" who orginally built it in Soldotna Wonderful man, genuinely passionate of all things, especially those with motors and hearts! Hunter, fisher, outdoorsman and builder of all things cool. God bless his soul! He cared for many o' folks in his time on this earth, myself included. Having driven that 6x6 personally, the rear steer was a trip! I can still here him say "lets sit down and think about this for a minute ", as he pondered his next move over a hot cup of coffee and a jar of bartered pickled salmon! Many of wise men built that machine! God bless and enjoy! I guarantee hes smiling down seeing it pound ground and hit the woods.
Exoskeleton/cage to replace those boat anchor bumpers and some lockers would be fun. I’m looking forward to seeing what you guys do with this one.
I would consider bead locks on your front axle. Tandem axle rears make the front want to always go straight which means alot of busted beads..
Rear steer fixes that
That’s why it’s got rear steer
@@rustedratchetgarage6788 I think he commented that because of the bead breaking several times, Though it could simply be because there dropping the air pressure drastically and abusing it. Im sure rear steer helps but the second its off it creates issues so you might as well spend a couple hundred and not have to worry about it period
I would replace the switches with a joystick that is self centering and rework the steering so it auto centers with the joystick again so you can really use it dynamically while driving. can’t wait so see what you guys make out of the crazy beast!
using a retro arcade bidirectional shift knob 🕹️
There you go!😉
a recentering toggle switch would be sublime
big brain moment 🧠 diy recentering addon should simply take a capacitor without polarity charged by previous input (and protected from overcharge with a zener diode) to dictate direction and trigger a latching transistor reversing the motor until cut off through a normally-closed relay interrupted by driver input signal and a switch for when it's centered
I'd switch it up to work like the Deora 2. Have it be a toggle switch so that it works in conjunction with the front steering.
you could probably find diffs for it from something like a land rover defender 6x6. Ive seen that they made a fair few of those for civillian and militery use so if the current diffs dont come up anything, that might be the place to check for equivilent replacements
I’m so glad you guys bought this thing! I had seen it for sale a while back and was very curious but now I can learn everything about it.
Amazing! Don't weld all the diffs though, then most of the steering will be lost. Get some lockers 👌🏽
Lockers or a set of TorSen centres and a way to apply brake to any lifted wheel
@@Trialnerror The wheels turning at equal speed makes for loss of steering also on steering axles unfortunately. So the steering will be compromised on all three axles if they weld the diffs. If he chose lockers instead full steering can be maintained with the lockers off and make for a more agile vehicle👌🏽
I remember this truck being for sale in my hometown Soldotna, Alaska about 7-8 years ago tried hard to convince my dad it would be a great first truck ahaha really cool to see it end up with you guys! Thanks for appreciating her and can't wait to see what y'all end up doing with it! P.S. Soldotna would make a great name for it!
I love that town
I loved there in the early 2000s, great little town.
Use to live in Soldotna during that timeframe… also I think we might be kin… related to Rick and Thelma?
I recall it sitting for sale on Kenai Spur for a summer. I stopped and checked it out a couple times.
Lol i live in Washington and it was for sale a couple years ago in town lol
It would be outstanding if you tracked down 2 more of those " Military front ends" & used them to replace the front end 8x8 4 up front 4 in the rear or it could be a bad idea ?
Looks like a fun rig to have. One thing to keep in mind is the lift kit that might be on the front end. A few cheaper lift kits would have a brace that would actually punch a hole in the front differential on full compression.
would love to see some general maintenance on the truck. this build looks interresting but could propably do with some Quality control
Single handedly THE BEST thing you guys have ever bought! Shorten the bed, lockers, grind hard diet, and send it to the moon!!!! Love it!
When I posted images of that truck on Pirate 4x4 five or so years ago, several commenters said the axles were from a M151 MUTT. One guy posted images of his dad’s restored M151 and it seemed like a likely source for the rears and the drive system.
The complete rear suspension sections are the front suspension assemblies from a M151A2 MUT Military vehicle.
"The Danger Ranger" love the new truck keep up the good work
Yes! Love it
That may already be a Cleeter Trademark.
The stranger ranger
Well, strike a deal with Cleeter: You call it Danger Ranger AND come to his next ‘Danger Ranger’-event and demolish the loosers car with the 6x6......
Stranger danger via the lone ranger
that's an M151 MUTT differential. It's those little military Jeeps. I think they have a passthrough shaft so you could ad a driveline to your trailers when towing stuff off-road. I dont think anyone makes lockers for them since they're like 100 years old now. But dont feel bad about welding it, you can still find them on ebay if you blow it to pieces.
I initially thought that it might be for a powered trailer, too, but it looks like they didn't have one. The extra input flange to the pinion shaft appears to be so that it can be turned to a high-pinion position for the front.
I've seen this thing on marketplace quite a few times and was tempted but im glad you guys got ahold of it!
There’s a handbrake/sequential shifter from thrustmaster that’s all Hall effect, ran in sequential mode with the de-tint removed so its smooth both ways, you could run the rear steer off that (with a program to translate the signal though)
Bead locks and air lockers! Unstoppable! Hilarious truck. So awesome how it just works.
The fact that that still fits on a U-Haul Auto transport trailer is amazing
That thing is sick! That'd be awesome to see a turbo, or a diesel swap into it, maybe a snorkel intake for the big bogs.
It made me so happy to see independent suspension, I hope you guys perfect this beast and give er hell
Man that looks awesome and fun as hell. Maybe you can make some tracks for the rear weals and make it into a half track when you aren't using the back wheels to turn. I think that would be cool.
Wow that is a great idea!! I’d love to see a half track ranger, just imagining it is awesome haha
that would be badass!!
Seems like that pivot under the rear end to allow for rear steer should be asymmetrical. It looks like the middle tires turn just as much as the rear tires and you'd think you'd want the rear tires to turn a little sharper.
Ideally for Ackerman, yes.
But it honestly wouldn't be worth the effort to change it
Surely moving the pivot point closer to the middle tyres would achieve that? So just remake the pivot point, drill a new hole in the bar and you're done (minus all of the calculations obviously!)
Nope, you want all 4 to turn the same.
@@malbers35 Vehicles with professionally engineered multi-wheel steering (fire trucks, heavy haul equipment) use asymmetric bell cranks to maintain proper Ackerman geometry. Since making this original comment I went down the rabbit hole and researched this a bit.
Of course, maybe crab walking/dog tracking is what the original designer was going for in which case this design is probably better... But that seems like a lot of work for just that!
@@bradley3549 as you said, crab walking. That's why you want all 4 to turn the same
Tank tracks, yes you wouldn’t be able to rear steer, but a little tire deflation and they are off. Also double check the gearing for the ford front and military rear diff if they aren’t the same that could be the reason for different tire sizes
This ranger is by far the best ranger build I've ever seen. Did I sneak a peek of a Washington license plate in the extended part of the cab? I'm a Washington native and would be proud if something that crazy came from here. Really enjoyed the video. Thanks for the entertainment guys!
It was in centralia wa for a couple years.
@@travisstonebraker9884 you're kidding. I spent a year working on a project in centralia. I never saw it, too bad that would have been cool to see up close.
What an amazing machine. With lockers and bead locks it would be close to unstopable.
I'm so glad you said something about bumper upgrades 😂 cant wait to see the transformation!!
As mentioned, self centering rear steer, different bumpers and rock sliders… and one of those Lund fastback spoiler things and visor too
I have been watching all builds for a good few years now and this by far is the best platform.to start a real off road beast my opinion wants the middle axle removing and a big huge lift kit a monster of an engine crammed full with nitro and full send on hill climbs something tells me this would do numbers
Weld the diffs, remove the front bumper and rear box. Make a tube bumper and flat deck, also make a low sided "exo cage" that connects the deck to the front bumper which will reinforce the flexy ranger frame and also protect the sides due to having such along wheelbase while turning in tight areas
I have been suggesting to Matt’s off road to get one like that. Ideally a crew cab, long bed, convert to standard cab, aluminum tilt bed. Mainly to recover side by sides, but if one ton frame. Likely it could recover smaller non drivable SUVs without a trailer.
Edwin don't stop wearing the coveralls! I did concrete for the past 6 years and insulated coveralls were my go-to all winter long! The best, foreal!
Tracks on those rear wheels would really make it unstoppable! Awesome creation!
Thats exactly what I'm thinking. Tracks and bigger engine
I think you should replace the front and the front- rear differential to a locking differentials and try to combine the rear steer with the front steer for easer driving
Overlander / apocalypse mix would be awesome!
I don't mean going full madmax, more of something that would get you trough anything. Like bulletproofing it?
First thing I noticed from all the flat tires is that she needs is some beadlock rims. Definitely a front mount wench, and how cool would it be to be able to put a plow on the front to push snow and whatever else you crazy guys could think of!!
i can see this easily being the next channel favorite if you ask me, cant wait to see what you guys do with it. i can already see tons of room for improvement
I'm so glad you guys got this one. Let your skills run wild boys. I can't wait to see what transpires.
This is probably the best 6x6 or 6x4 video out there. Most of them are like "it's a 6x6 but let's focus on the cool paint!"
Bob the bed. With that rear steer the rear end swings around and bobbing the bed would help maneuverability.
It would also be amazing with rear tracks and a selectable locker for them.
Anyone know what diffs these are and where we could get lockers for them?
U have a whole spool of locker in your welder
Second steering wheel for passenger!!!
when?
I think they're out of an M151 Mutt Jeep. Apparently some people have modded Suzuki lockers for them, but there don't seem to be any off the shelf parts.
Lincoln Electric makes great lockers.
Ford M151"Mutt"
Ford 300i6 swap. I’ve got one in my ranger and it’s the best thing, being able to tow like a half ton with a ranger gives only the best looks. Not to mention the reliability and torque of the motor makes it a great off roader.
This is the content Im looking for. Hopefully you will restore its to its former glory and modify some parts to make it more powerful and cool looking.
For the winter you could lock out the rear steer and put tracks and skis on it. Should be a ton of fun on DEEP SNOW
Need to get some beadlocks to hold those tyres in place absolutely awesome rig though can’t wait to see how she does with those diff locked on the Rocks
Saw that on marketplace awhile back, so awesome y’all bought it!!
I am so happy we grabbed it before somebody else
@@GrindHardPlumbingCo the brave are rewarded, haha excited to see more content with it
I am so happy you guys bought this thing! I saw the article Jalopnik did on it and I said to myself "If I had the money...."
You can probably make a set of mini spools. Definitely open it and take a look. A mini-spool just replaces the spider gears. It's not like a full spool that replaces the whole differential.
I remember seeing this for sale and thinking nobody was ever going to buy it because of all its flaws, however you proved me wrong.
Its called "fuck you" money.
Nobody in thier right mind would buy it. Except somebody with fuck you money. Because "fuck you"!
Lol
That's a hell of a rig! Makes me wonder what the hell kind of ducks they have in Alaska. Honestly I'd build out the rear bumper to match the front--seems the front does its job, but the rear isn't protecting the tail lights.
Those axles are awesome! Most heavy duty military vehicles have the same axles front and rear to make repairs easier!
These are light-duty, from the M151 MUTT... but yes, same front and rear in the M151.
@@brianb-p6586 oh yeah, I know these aren’t hd, i was basing my info on my fire departments 5 ton, I believe even original hummers had a lot of shared components front and rear for the same reason
M151 mutt differential. I'm sure it'd be really hard to get any parts for those diffs. Nam era military vehicle. Very cool and interesting build. Weld em up and grind hard!
It would be sick if you guys made a body cage to go all around it love the content
I kinda like the clean ranger body
I’d say flat bed it so you take some weight off the rear and have more clearance. Also velociranger edit you could also use a multi hydro brake the goes both directions and modify it to use as your rear steer
It'd be cool to see you guys make an overland expedition rig, this would probably be a sweet platform to build a serious explorer.
I saw it FB Marketplace it sold before my father and I agreed on buying it! Glad it went to a good home.
This is really cool, unique for sure. Keep building it!
Can't wait to see what you guys do with this, so cool but a lift kit would be cool like a bigger lift than it has and a Mercedes Om606 power plant 🤣
I think you guys should do a prerunner bumper, skid plate and air lockers, or like cable ARB or OX lockers. Also need bead locks(came off the rim way too much!), matching 37’s(40’s would look sick, and like 12.5’s, those on there look like 14” wide boggers). Also need to change the rear steer to a auto-centering single switch, to toggle it back and forth for left to right.
Pretty slick new ride can’t wait to see how you guys make it that much better
Cool beans! First blush tells me that, you might consider a solar charger for the rear steer battery. It begs to be mounted atop a Super Bee style rear spoiler....because, of course, you need more rear down force at those speeds.
I think just a deep cycle battery and a split charge system is what it needs. A solar panel is never going to input what is being output to the power pack..
@@Alexx__xD Hahaha...yeah, it was a joke, just like the spoiler.
@@artthurman3446 sorry I missed the humor in ur bad joke.. 🤷
I’d love to see a barra swap with matching 37s on the front, beadlocks and a tow truck bed or something!
If it has the 4.0 OHV motor, they're known for cracking heads after moderate overheating. Absolutely work on the cooling.
Ditch the overweight bumpers, and maybe soften the rear suspension, it looked awfully stiff for the application.
Still, very cool find!
I actually was wondering what motor it has myself if in fact its the 4.0 V6 they should consider a V8 or 4bt swap this rigs much more heavy now
@@vee950 4bt would be cool, but stupid heavy in itself.
Smallblock 5l (windsor) is a near bolt in swap, but unless built barely has any more torque than the 4l, and not that much of an improvement on hp either.
Alternatively if they don't care about going fast, they could regear(or add a doubler) and work out the cooling.
Glad you guys picked her up!!!
Would love to see you guys do something with that front bumper! Lord knows how many lightbars and winches you would need to use up all that space though 😂
It’s literally to stand on
Probably used as a firefighting or hunting rig
Put 3 stingers on it
I think they should keep the bumper, but maybe add to it or modify it slightly, to stay true to the original builders vision
Now this is a work of mechanical art.
Can't wait to see all the upgrades you'll end up doing. Fixing those bumpers is a must lol
I agree with removing the funky bumper, then you should convert the rear steer to self centering, and see if you can run a hydraulic pump off of a pto system.
You guys should get diff locks for it for sure! (Y) 🙂
Looks like M151 MUTT subframes and running gear
Two M151 fronts.
That crazybumper it’s killing every chance of having approach angle
I was almost thinking the switches remind me of a plow controller...not quite, but that would make sense if it were since those run off hydraulics as well. Cool truck.
Love you guys! Thanks for the FAN FEATURE!!!
Hey thanks for submitting! Cool project!
@@GrindHardPlumbingCo YEWWWW

Love it when u guys post keep pumping the great content
Happy to hear it! Will do!
I would like to say I saw this on marketplace about two years ago good to see it finally sold
It's been on marketplace for a while! Perfect truck for your channel!
Damn that thing is badass! Looks like something from madmax
It is so cool!
Really curious to know how they split power to both rear axles.
Edit: Just watch the video longer :)
Nice find. Lucky guys, a little tweeking and that will be a beast, the rears ends are out of a hummer.
My 99 mountaineer has the same steering wheel controls. Left side dangles but you can like pull it back In place and it stays there for awhile.
This thing is amazing! 👌
It just seems too good to be true. I think we just stepped into another dimension or things like this exist on craigslist
So when can we expect to see long travel suspension and a motor swap? I don't think it's quite Grind Hardy enough lol
as much as i love all the small engine stuff you guys do (its why i follow you guys) i also love these bigger projects. and this has to be one of the best you've started.
it needs lockers, an LS, a th400 with a np transfercase and this thing will be pretty much indestructible.
TH400? Get with the times
6L90E or 4L80 at least.
Soft ground floatation! Parallel parking easy in space length of truck!!
Wow machine!!!!
I don’t think you need rear steering I something that small, but definitely locking differentials , maybe better tires and or Dually setup
Them bigger tires are a really good tire you can make paddles out of them just by cutting them up with a tire cutter awesome tire
RANGER POWER, also it needs to do moab
Absolutely!
This truck is amazing! Keep the content coming!
You guys should put 2 sets of tracks in the back!!! That would be the ULTIMATE RANGER
Definitely needs some kind of locks so all 6 wheels will actually spin instead of just 1.
Yeah. It has my mind headed to 8x8 truck trials racing. Which I can watch for hours!
you mean all 6 instead of 4 lol
Diesel swap for sure. Having lots of torque would help to swing all that rubber around!
Diesels suck off-road. Slow to rev and ultra heavy.
A 4 or 6bt Cummins would be all that truck needs, tbh
damn, i saw this on the cars section of apple news a month or two ago and i was just waiting for on of these brilliant fabrication channels to pick it up.
thats rad, guys.
keep up the hard work!
Can't wait to see what they'll do with this one ! OMG I just love it
