    I read my pharm book, had a lecture, and bought a pharm made easy book. None of which helped me understand the PNS, sns, the mimic's, and cholinergic's. I watched your 6 minute video and it clicked. Thank you soooo much.

    My GI prescribed me Bentyl, an anticholinergic, for IBS w/ Constipation. Ironically and inexplicably, it did help the constipation, however the side effects were UNREAL! My thinking was slow and foggy, I became socially awkward and uncomfortable, I craved chocolate like mad and then binged on it, had serious dry mouth, dry girlie parts, dry eyes, and a total lack of motivation to think, plan, organize or get up and move. This seems contradictory to me since it should increase brain activity and the desire to move ("fight or flight"). My theory is that the PNS could also be called "Fight, Flight or Freeze" and we all have a tendency toward one of these reactions over the others. For me, I believe I have a tendency to freeze, sort of like the deer in the headlights phenomenon. One time my friend's 2 year old fell into the pool and while someone next to me jumped in I stood there frozen, unable to even compute what was happening. I was so confused by my reaction and ashamed of myself for not jumping into action. I wonder if my PNS causes a freezing-effect within my body which causes everything in my gut to seize up. My stomach will turn into a rock and my entire bowel will just freeze. Strangely, this is triggered by carbohydrates, and the more complex the carbohydrate, the more severe my reaction. My daughter is the same. I'm fascinated by all this and can't stop digging to find the answers.

      Sorry, I meant SNS!

    • @hautemama85
      @hautemama85 Před 8 lety +1

      In fact, now that I think of it, as a kid I could sneak around almost anywhere because I could move so precisely and then hold deadly still whenever I sensed someone. Almost like how prey are in the wild. I've never been a fighter or a runner. The idea of running scares me, I've had nightmares of running from a threat. Freezing seems to be my initial reaction to stress.

    • @MHSMagicLuver
      @MHSMagicLuver Před 5 lety +1

      I would have thought anticholinergic would make you more constipated and cholinergics would make you have diarrhea or less constipsted

    • @merwiza
      @merwiza Před 3 lety

      @@MHSMagicLuver u r correct. Cholinergic are related to Parasympathetic (PNS aka parasympathetic nervous system). This is a system that works opposite of fight or flight (SNS). So whenever ur in PNS u are relaxing and digesting, therefore u secrete more juices or fluids for digestion. U r not afraid/stressed so u don't need much energy to survive so ur entire body is just chilling, ur eyes are not popped out to focus, ur brain is working and computing but not as fast as how it computes when u r in a stressfull or dangerous situation. So basically cholinergics are chill n relax drugs. Also Anticholinergics are not necessarily for the sympathetic nervous system. Sympathetic nervous system is adrenergic...and the opposite of adrenergic is anti-adrenergics. The reason why anticholinergics should not be confused as SNS is that there are specific organs and receptors that are affected by Adrenergic drugs and other organs and receptors that are specific to PNS and their cholinergic effects. It is important to know which organs are affected by PNS and which organs are influenced by SNS. Once u know those organs then u will be able to apply the concept of fight or flight vs rest n digest.
      It is a broad lecture that can't be taught in 5 minutes and it is very confusing the 1st time around

      luckylisa44 He isnt that smart. Whenever you talk about anticholinergics you should mention acetylcholine. Thats what anticholinergics do, they block acetylcholine from binding to receptors and cholinergics does the opposite. The parasympathetic nervous system is controlled by The Vagus nerve which uses acetylcholine a neurotransmitters to stimulate the digestive organs as well as the heart and lungs amongst other things. You block acetylcholine and the results is impairing cognition, slow motility, blurred vision ect. I have my BSN in nursing and I could've explained with way more clarity.

    Anticholinergic bronchodilators turn on the sympathetic (fight or flight) nervous system, not off. I think you misspoke in the beginning of the video.
