  • Our design team's design process consisted of extensive observation of the cardboard material that was required to use to complete the challenge. We brainstormed by sketching various designs for chair models of different styles that could succeed in the challenge. Through process of elimination of the various designs, we created two different chair leg prototypes. After testing the weight capacity of these prototypes, we determined our final design. We decided to refine our chair's back to be more supportive and functional. We used implementation within our design by keeping strong engineering principles key and continually refining our design. As we were building our chair, we looked to other chairs for aesthetic inspiration, with regard to height. Our final chair design accomplished its function of holding a two hundred pound person, by supporting this weight and not collapsing, it shows great durability. As we looked into different options for obtaining cardboard, we encountered our "cardboard buzz of the world" at a local craft store. He was an ASU Art Degree graduate. He encouraged us to use only recyclable cardboard, noting that it would be more durable than the cardboard that that store was selling. We used one hundred percent recyclable cardboard from consumer product packaging. Our team utilized the "less is more" ethic by using minimum amounts of cardboard to create our final chair. The weight of our chair is only 14 ounces!!
