8088MPH Final Version IBM PC/XT Real Hardware 60fps Demonstration

- A true demo for my demonstration series! I decided to record the 8088 MPH demo because I wanted a slightly different recording than other recordings already available. Here I am using a true new-style IBM CGA card and recording the PC Speaker directly from alligator clips. The result is a bright sound but there is a hum where there should be silenced. Compared to the filtering of a Sound Blaster's mixer, I believe the tradeoff is worth it.
I hope to have a capture device capable of capturing truly stable video from an old IBM CGA card soon. When I do and if it works out, I will try to record the party version of 8088 MPH, which was designed only for that card.
Best I have ever heard the IBM PC audio sound! Demo is amazing and proves the PC was capable of much more graphically than what anyone ever realized, if the time was taken to coax out the capabilities.
Capable? Yes. While running game logic and similar? Probably not.
The best use of PC Speaker was Pinball Fantasies, which played MOD files in the background ON PC SPEAKER while running a scrolling VGA pinball game.
Pc speakers can in theory play any 8 bit 11khz sound, but the issue is that the interupt is reallo short, so the cpu need to be fairly high clocked for it to work well. Also the sound loop ned to be the one with most priority. I seen pc speaker play just normal CD audio (but in 11khz).. but thst was on a 386
The issue wirh the 1k color more is that the resolution is very low.

Amazing job on the demo, and good job on the capture, but next time you capture PC Speaker audio, could you downmix it to mono before uploading please? The audio only comes out of the left speaker, which is going to be torture for headphone users!

How was there more than 4 colors in low res mode? I had a handme down 8088 w CGA and it was either a select 4 colors or another select 4 colors, 16 colors was for text only. Either way this is so cool, my old pc couldn't do shit with the 256k ram and 8mhz. I could play phantasie series and lands of lore. I was so happy to get a 386 in 1991 thing had cdrom, 2 typed of floppy drives, hard drive, sound blaster 1mb ram and 256 color vga. I upgraded it to svga 1mb vram, and 4mb ram. Loved that system.
The low resolution 160x100 "pixel" mode is an 80 column by 25 text row mode with the text adjusted to 100 rows. Each 80x100 cell uses a half pipe character which allows one foreground color for the left side of the pixel and one background color for the right side of the pixel. 8088MPH has higher memory requirements than most of the games of the time which used the mode.
That picture at 7:01 is only that tall because of the 16K VRAM limitation, right? Would it have been possible to use an artificial scan line effect and only draw every second line, i.e. skip every other line, and thereby get a taller picture out of the 16K VRAM?

how do you get past the "which cga am i?" screen?
The screen is on a timer, it will progress to the calibration screen automatically. It may break on less than accurate hardware or hardware which has faults.
