ABOUT NEW AMSTERDAM
In the wake of the ambulance crash that ended Season 1, medical director Dr. Max Goodwin grieves the death of his wife, Georgia, and learns the difficulties of being a single parent - all the while continuing his commitment to solve systemic health care issues at the hospital. Add in his new responsibilities as a father and with cancer still lingering in the rearview mirror, everyone around Max must wonder how long he can sustain this impossible load. Absolutely! He was fighting himself internally with what he wanted and what she needed. It was also a big moment bcuz he doesn’t know she broke up with her boyfriend, so he could be thinking it’s for them. 💔

It's interesting reading all the comments about them growing apart, however I didn't see that at all, the sitting arrangement was so intimate which was a sharp contrast to the conversation at hand. From where I sit, I think Max finally listening was a game changer for Helen, although she 'broke up' with Max by resigning from work ie retrieving her headspace back to focus on family, the break-up later on with Shinn retrieved her heart back. Even though the reason she gave to Shinn seemed legit, we all know it was a mirage .This is De Ja Vu, because she gave a smiliar reason to Dr Penthaki who saw right through it and called out Helen's affection for Max. Shinn on the other hand was blindsided by Helen's feelings even at the table conversation with Max last week he didn't catch on to the emotional conversation going on. I believe Max will finally have a chance with her because he chose to finally isten, and this was evident through the whole episode! Am excited for what's to come. I hope I've not read this wrongly. lol. Love this show!x

The writers have written the story between these 2 so well, delivering the "break-up" blow by blow from the time Max walks in on Helen-Cassian. He's had to quickly come to terms with his feelings and tries hard to hold onto her professionally. Now, even that is lost. In these moments, Helen has always given him the opportunity to own up but he can never come clean, preferring to talk in code. Played beautifully as always by Ryan and Freema. Ryan says so much with just his eyes. Oh and the music for this scene is spot on.
Yes, Ryan's eyes - the expressions were so well acted and genuine that you could feel the real emotions. Excellent actor.
Everytime they look at each other for more than 2 seconds it looks like they're going to kiss or want to 🥰🥰

Same for me. That close shot, with Max eyes changing every bit. Swallowing, probably feeling scared to let her go and not understanding her decision. Just amazingly WoW. I wish Helen could be slight more open with her expressions.

Max‘ expression of a beaten dog at the end, what did he think then and there. He just had seen her with Dr Shin, knew that she was wanting a family, did not know anything about the dead brother stuff… did he think she was going to focus on that, getting serious with Shin, getting pregnant?! His was was definitely saying SHE IS SLIPPING AWAY AND I AM DOING NOTHING! Love this angst
Better late than never! I was totally thinking everything in your comment. I could only imagine what was going on in Max's mind. I felt like any minute, as she walked away, that tears would start rolling down his cheek. When he said "ok" 3x's after she said she was stepping down as DMD to focus on other things, I could feel the hurt in his voice and see the sadness in his eyes; it was heartbreaking! Then, gorgeous Helen, lovingly smiles at him, and says "thank you for listening". All Max could do was stare at her as she quietly gets up and walks away. I'm sure at this point, he is thinking, "I'm losing her"...
They are so good together...miss their dinamic and good talks between them

Max needs to heal and find balance. Then he’ll be in a better position to be someone’s partner. There’s no space for anything romantic right now. He’s very much still grieving his wife’s death.
This whole episode was such an emotional one, but this scene, THIS SCENE.
This scene is just ... No words for it . Just amazing . And the writers of this show are the greatest .
It's has always been Helen doing the heavy lifting when it comes to her & Max, always ready to listen & be there for him. Helen is very observant especially when it comes to him, so she tends to know when something is on his mind or off with him.
Now when it comes Max he doesn't seem all that observant towards her. He sees her but at the same time he doesn't really see her at all, which is heart breaking. Yes when you're close to someone you sometimes miss things. However, because he has become so use to her being there he isn't picking up on the fact that she too has personal things going on, something he use to pick up on (just a little) in the past. Has he mentioned here, things are a lot easier knowing she is there but what about her?. Has he once ask her how she is doing/what's on her mind this season? If he has & I've missed please correct me. It's only the 6 episode plus another 2 seasons, so I think we are in for a long wait but at the same time I hope not.

You said it perfectly, I feel he'll finally be able to realise he's in love with her, and maybe even be able to move on from the death of his wife (taking off his ring) now that she's putting herself first. He's definitely going to feel the impact of her not been there all the time.

In this scene I felt them growing apart. Like she was letting go of him somehow but she gotta do what she gotta do and focus on what's best for her.
not quite, though earlier when he tried talking to her may have caused something in her to rekindle. Because of this, she needed to back away, which is also why she most likely broke up with Shin. Yes, her 16 year old niece is moving in, but that's an older teen, so obviously not someone that needs her full attention.
I felt that. She didn’t even tell him about her niece coming to stay with her. I feel like she would’ve done that ASAP before, but now she hadn’t, and ngl, that hurt 😔

I have noticed that she pushed away both of the doctors who were so into her. I think that she has don that for Max. I do not think that she is ready for Max.... She will be..... They will end up together eventually. At the moment, Helen has to work on her- her feelings, her feelings for Max, and her feelings towards what she wants to do regarding her life. It is funny loads- when she was ready for him, he was not! Now he is ready, he feels like he's lost his best friend
Max will get a full blown heart attack before he reveals his feelings for Helen.

Love New Amsterdam. The writing is so strong so relevant. When I re-watch an episode of New Amsterdam I always realize and notice that there was something that I missed seeing it the first time. I am surprised that the writers put an end to Helens and Shins relationship so fast. Think the writers should have had it going on a little longer so Max could really deal with his feelings toward her being with another man. Also wonder if Max thinks that Helen is stepping down to work on her relationship with Shin but eventually he'll find out if they're no longer together. Not sure how I feel about Helens niece coming to stay with her a teenager can be a lot of work. Is it me or did anyone else think that the actress playing her niece looks a lot older than 16? Can't wait to see what happens next. I'm in for the Long Haul New Amsterdam has been renewed until 2023.

I eventually do want Max and Helen to get together but if I'm being honest Dr. Shin was such a supportive guy, such a sweetheart to her and the reason for her breaking up with him was not well written at all!! She could have still raised her niece and be with him, the niece is a whole teenager and he was willing to help in any way he could. It just didn't make sense!

I think it's because of what her niece said about her not having time for family why Helen decided to step down as deputy medical director. I for one think the writers are doing an excellent job tums up to them.. Maybe we'll finally get to see and know more about Helen family.. She told him later in season 3 that everything she has done she did for him and this includes breaking up with Dr. Shin..but he was too afraid to express his true feelings. Until that last episode of season 3

This explains why Max was so desperate to deal with racism in this episode...and he has some good points.
How can the public show a sort of "look at how cute that little one is" towards a child like Luna and then, start telling a person of color to "control your child" in a similar scenario...it makes no sense!
Then again, things like racism or sexism never made sense to me. I believe all humans are equal (where it really matters,) no matter who we are
I don't think she dumped Shin for Max.. I think it has to do with her brother's passing and not getting to spend more time with him therefore she missed out on alot. Her niece told her her father said she didn't have room in her life for family. I think she wants to just slow down and enjoy some family time. It's her life her decision because we like Dr Shin for her doesn't mean she likes him for a long term relationship and it makes no sense being in a relationship and having feelings for someone else she needs to work out some things as do Max.. Let's give her space and time to do so.. #SHARPWIN

I'm glad Helen's character will have more stories aside from being the doctor extraordinaire that she is at work. As for Max, well, sort out your emotions so that you can pursue Helen with gusto. Remember how he chased after Georgia without holding back? I want that!! I want him to declare how he feels without stuttering!! In the mean time, we can see Helen outside of work being a parent dealing with a 16 year old.

I don’t think it was a “breakup” at least I hope not. I believe that this conversation changed Helen’s feelings towards Chin. Now she needs to get herself sorted.

While I ship Max and Helen, they need to establish healthy boundaries. Max is selfish. His relationship with Helen is similar to his relationship with Georgia in that he expects his partner to be there for him and what he needs, not taking what they want or need in to account.

Max and Helen it was so heartbreaking for me to watch these two people I don't think Max knows about the loss of her brother and taking in her niece I think he have a better understanding and Sharpe can take Medical Director place once she has things together like she wants cause her and Max really do care for each other and things at the hospital maybe can run a little smoother things will never be the same since to Cov-id. but we can make the best of it.

Oh no! Haven't watched the full episode yet but Sharpwin seems to be losing some of that intense chemistry and attraction that we have enjoyed on the earlier seasons. I feel like Helen's got so many of her own issues going on that she can't afford to have anything compromise them, even relationships.
But you're right; since the beginning, Helen's been the closest thing Max had to a second-in-command or a confidante who truly understood him in the hospital.
So, for her to act so distant with him when it looked like Max really needed help was...slightly damaging

Resumindo. Ele fala do racismo estrutural. E revela q tem sido tudo muito difícil mas graças a ela ele está bem. Por ela estar e o ajudar. Porém logo em seguida Hellen diz q não quer mais ser vice diretora porq quer focar em sua vida pessoal. Dai ele diz ok, mas fica destruido. I don't think Max was necessarily ignorant to it, I think he was ignorant to the fact that it influenced how he thought he could tackle issues such as racism.
I think privilege is to simple of a world it makes it seem like you think you're better than someone. In max case and in most people not just white people you becomes so use to things in life that as you get older it's like living in a cloud or on auto pilot. I will say not seeing the scene on the subway or ones where Luna was there I'd like to know if max had seen this guy on it before. My reason is just cause no one has cared when Luna does it doesn't mean this guy was there to see that. If he wasn't we don't know what he would had said most likely nothing but we don't know. I'm just thinking the impact would mean more if it was someone on the subway max sees regularly and likes it would had been more eye opening and impactful for max.

Agreed. I have faith that these writers aren't gonna pull a Bellarke on us, though -- the writing doesn't feel like it's purposefully dancing around with these two. The storytelling feels pretty organic. I like that it seems that they're growing apart because it's more or less inevitable that when they get close again, it'll be stronger than ever.

Ryan Eggold is a great actor in my view. Love seeing his work. You sometimes forget when you do see excellent acting that it is just that. ACTING. . I wonder how Ryan is in real life or in the real world in regards to the issues on race and inequality. It would be interesting to know. You have a few actors who are actual activist on bigotry , injustices to many groups and against global warming etc. Many can act a part but how many will do the real work needed for a better world, yet I am glad to know that the writer for this show is sending out messages to make people think on these things. Good job! Graciously thankful for him or her.

I think us viewers are a bit inpatients. I mean, S2 was about Max grieving, Helen said what she said in the latest episode and Max's responded her with the kiss (that didn't happen) but it was a sign that he feels the same way but he's not ready, so Helen decided to move on. In this episode, I don't think Max will open up to her quickly because of her relationship with Shin. Don't stop watching guys, be patient. I think the writers are making a good job.

A TV romance between these two is highly improbable, of course I could be wrong. Given the type of women who costar with Ryan/Max I just don't see it occurring. Thus far on New Amsterdam, interracial couples only have been shown with Helen and Cassian and or Akash. Max's character has not been able to communicate anything for over 2 years to Helen beyond his dependency on her professional skills that elevate his own. He cares about her, but I don't think in a passionate, romantic way. He may have been threatened by seeing Cassian kissing Helen because his professional dynamic with Helen would diminish. Max had no problems communicating his feelings and intent to Alice or Georgia. I don't think Max is sexually or romantically attracted to Helen. He may appreciate Helen's beauty but it seems like a closed loop. Also, Max is unpacking his grief as a widow, being a single father, dealing with remission and the emotional impact of it all. Helen was his doctor and that kind of intimacy probably ruined their chances of being a couple. I think NBC isn't ready for interracial coupling shown on screen specifically with a woman of color. I think NBC is worried about the ratings dropping if Helen and Max get together. If this show was on ABC this would be a different discussion.
I bet Max will be paired with Bloom or another new person entering into Season 3 just not Helen. Who knows though, I could be totally wrong. I've just watched the last 2 seasons and current episodes and just get the feeling that they are phasing out the closeness of Max and Helen. I just hope the writers give Helen good stories away from Max. He lost his chance and Helen shouldn't have to wait around for him, she has been doing a lot of the heavy lifting for Max, and she needs to focus on herself for a while.

@Glory Vaudan completely agree! It’s actually shocking to me that anyone could question if this was romantic. It’s debatable if they’d stay together til the end of the series but there was never any doubt to me it was romantic.
By mid season one they had a patient(the psychic) say to Max there was someone he cared about besides his wife and he was going to lose her & It wouldn’t work out between them then at the end of the episode she took it back and said maybe she was wrong about it not working out.
They threw in lines like:
“what If I want you?”
“Please please please take me back.”
“I can’t do this without you.”
Which all have romantic undertones.
This was meant to be a slow burn relationship. Max starting out with Georgia, he losing her, rebounding & healing with Alice before he’s ready for Helen. If I remember correctly the reason they had originally planned to kill Georgia sooner. Ultimately they kept her around to help stall getting Helen & Max together for a little while longer.

Used to like the show, but seeing how helen keeps throwing away good opportunities for boring immature Max isn't even worth it. I really like Dr. Shin for helen, they actually make a good power couple but she is so hung up on max is ridiculous. It reminds me of a relationship I had for almost 3 years with a man that couldn't make up his damn mind and kept me hanging. Finally I left him and guess what? He's still the same immature, mama's boy man. The writers truly are writing randomly and making poor choices.
But she didn't throw Shin because of Max. It's actually because of her niece. You can clearly see that in this episode she's choosing her that's why they're not as close as they use to since the beginning of this episode. You could barely see them sharing their problems.
Helen is losing her mind, quit, broke with Shin. I really annoyed her behavior.
I can't be the only one who was confused and thought this was High School Musical...and hella confused 😕 seeing other ppl
