As always John your channel is a joy to watch. Just a straight forward approach to everyday issues in the average joiners shop. No unnecessary frills, no fancy tools…just honest to God methods and outcomes! I know you run a very successful electrical business, and that must take priority in order to support your family. I just hope that you can make time again, to come back and give all of your viewers some more of that Eireann skill that you so easily impart in front of the camera! Happy New Year John….hopefully you won’t leave us again? Len (Devon 🇬🇧)?

Strawbyte workshop do some clips to attach the track saw cable to the dust hose. Doesn't solve the problem of them catching, but it helps. Bench is looking good and looking forward to seeing the plans for the new one in the future!

Just glad to see you back! I'm in the middle of a complete shop re-do myself. I have been in the exact same space as you I think. I was completely burnt out between my paycheck work and the remodeling in our basement to create a space for my wife's pottery studio, that I just haven't had anything left for shop work. Been about 6 months without touching a hand tool, honestly my bench hasn't even been useable lol....My space has been a 14yr work in progress using left over materials from odd jobs and other things, that lately had been an utter mess and not conducive to creativity for sure. I am finally in a place financially to make it right and so that's what I am doing (or trying to anyway). I m hoping that getting the shop as it should be will make it more inviting so I can get out an finish some projects I started for both my wife and daughter.

Nice job John. I have one suggestion when you do the permanent rebuild, make the end cap of your tail vise flush or extend past the edge of the MFT top by the thickness of the end cap. If you look at tail vise benches, the tail vise end is longer than the rest of the bench. Cheers

Hey John, I too have been thinking about combining a traditional hardwood with an MFT style. I really enjoyed you verbalizing your thought process as you were attacking the various issues.
As I haven’t built my MFT work bench yet I’m scouring the internet for good ideas, tips and pitfalls. My thought is to make two of the Ron Paul torsion tops with space for a stop gap in between. Then one side can be swapped out with a hardwood top that I don’t need to build yet. 3x3 made a pretty sweet (very upscale) version although I think hers is more work bench with an MFT portion. Just need to see what vises I might consider in the future to make sure I take that into account with my various part heights.

John, your timing is impeccable. I have to redesign my workbench as I've added a much bigger table saw to the shop and have less space than before. I'm loving the features you're experimenting with with yours.. I have already seen how I can make something similar to you for my needs and I'm just waiting for SWMBO's New Years work orders to end so I can get back into the shop to do things I want to do. Great video and I can't wait to see your final design. Happy New Years to you and the family.

The Sjobergs screw-type holdfasts don't need any depth at all; you might think of those as an option.

I'm surprised you didn't install the new section so the trim of the router section budded into the new section, it would of given you additional MFT surface and kept the width the same on that side.

Getting into turning and just got set carbide tools had set traditional gouges but they didn't work very well for me gonna try carbide then look into quality set gouges think maybe the quality and sharpness was bit of an issue. 👍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Don’t think there would be much wrong with shortening the holdfasts John. They’re only bending against the depth of the workbench.

nice upgrade. great way to recycle 2 benches. I am getting ideas for my work bench table i love the idea of the router at the end. but i have 1 question what do you think about the MFT top? compared to just a solid top? i loved the video gave me some ideas that's for sure. 1 thing i am going to do is make my dogs pop up dogs so they don't feel up with saw dust. i am sure they are very easy and are cost affective. i watched a video on doing them and cant find it now. but there are a ton of them.
