He's not blaming the van. Read: "From a defensive driving perspective." Defensive driving, and right of way / who's at fault, are two different issues. Just because the bus driver was in the wrong doesn't mean the van driver couldn't have avoided the collision.

Bus driver certainly to blame here, but van driver didn't start braking until a full 5 seconds after the bus started coming over. Surely anyone would notice a huge red vehicle right next to them coming over into their lane right away? Victim not to blame of course, but their sense of self preservation seems a tad...slow.

The bus had no indicator on and looked like it was going straight. It looks like the bus just failed to maintain their lane and came over into the car. Bus was completely at fault.

It's actually really dangerous to come to a complete stop in a lane of traffic to "let someone merge" for the same reason that you don't stop to leave a gap for someone to cross a multiple-lane road as we see again and again in these videos. The onus is on the truck to stop safely and merge safely when it is clear. The person in the lane of travel should not have stopped. We don't know the truck's dilemma so we can't blame them, but it would have been nice if they weren't stopped in the middle of the off ramp.

@@Extremaduur I doubt the insurance company would go after the drivers parents unless they owned the vehicle he was driving. But the cammer could absolutely seek punitive and pain and suffering compensation through a private attorney. I have a friend who was in a similar situation with an uninsured driver, and she won a $80,000 settlement. The lawyer took 30% off the top, and my friend has yet to see a dime. The local court collections will eventually send it to the State Franchise Tax Board if the person doesn't set up a payment plan, and then the state will garnish up to 25% of their gross wages every paycheck. But it takes a long time to get to that point.

OH NO NO NO! AT 5:45, the SUV was ALEADY in the lane. The LAW says that vehicles CHANGING STATUS (lane, speed, position, etc.) MUST YIELD to traffic already in the lane or on course. These laws have been around for 75 years at least. To claim ignorance is just stupid -- and illegal! Also, the bus DID NOT SIGNAL! Also illegal! No passenger vehicle can protect itself from such nonsense, especially with NO SIGNAL from the bus. Outrageous! And outrageous to question who is at fault -- the bus is at fault ! Traffic coming from right, which was near a big shoe company, so I kept an eye out just in case. But a woman who stopped at stop sign on left, figured she had time to cross over -- but didn't. Saw her out of the corner of my eye and braked. But it had just started to rain, so slight oil slick caused me to slide into her. Hit her just behind rear door, and her car swung into a minivan waiting at stop on right (woman driver of van cried, since it wasn't her van.) Radiator and engine were pushed back on left side, and my 1992 Toyota Tercel was totaled! Bought new, and just needed a $1500 engine job (at dealer) to be like new again. I got $2875 from insurance, and got an older used car for $3000.

At least in the video at 0:28, it looks like the cause was too much steering input. In slick conditions, turning the wheel past a certain point can cause the front wheels to start plowing ahead instead of steering you. Technically it can happen in dry conditions too, but the speed and amount of steering input required are so much higher that most people are unlikely to ever experience it.
