I am Dyslexic and struggled a ton in school. I didn't know it was dyslexia when I was in school. But I have realized while homeschooling our five children that each of them have some degree of dyslexia. We're halfway through level 3 with my oldest and it has already helped him a ton!!

It truly is a game changer isn’t it? I am too, just on a lower Spectrum. It makes so much sense once I found out. It shows that particularly in my spelling, and how I pronounce certain words from time to time. Even at my age, I catch it.

I rarely comment on YT. God bless you!! Thank you so much for this! Great information. I am married to a severe dyslexic. Our daughter is dyslexic and we have known/suspected since she was 3. But since discovering Barton and researching with people like you, I have never felt such peace. I love your emotions. I feel like we would be good friends if we knew each other. God bless you and your family!

Thank you for posting this. I really appreciate the honesty. I, too, am homeschooling 5 children. I have been using Writing Road to Reading and supplementing with Reading Eggs. I have just decided that this hasn't been working with my 3rd grader, and I need to move on to something else. I haven't gotten a dyslexia diagnosis, but I highly suspect it. Our progress was very slow, and in the last couple months it seems to have hit a wall. I have a meeting scheduled with a consultant and a tutor next week to discuss next year, and I am just a little hesitant about the Barton program. Thank you for explaining it all to me so well.

I have tried many other curriculums (with some success) that incorporate the Burton system but for whatever reason my kids are not catching on. Your review has given me hope to just buckle down, learn it myself and teach my kids with the original curriculum. Thank you so much and I look forward to following!

Hi Diana! Awesome video!! Two questions: 1. When you contact the office to "switch over" the box from one owner to the next, is there some reason for this? What additional benefit is it to register with the company? Also, how did you go about the process of getting your student evaluated for dyslexia? My son is now in middle school and I've been suspecting it for some time. I'd like to make it official so I'm not guessing.

Lisa, I missed this message, I apologize! You only need to switch the owners if you plan to buy the digital tiles. You can’t buy the tiles if you don’t own that kit level. I’d highly recommend Sally Shaywitz book Overcoming Dyslexia! You don’t need a test necessarily if you read/listen to it.

Hi Joan, I am on level 6 right now , level 4 was brutal! Outside of level 4, they all are pretty good, I’ve done some research on 7-10, they all seem to be fine. I’m not sure if there was a better way to teach the concepts in 4 (the material is just challenging for anyone) but it took us MUCH longer and I needed support to get through it. But we did it, and everything else after that was a breeze… kinda 😅. -Diana

Hi, Diana. I appreciate your straightforward commentary! My daughter is dyslexic and years of advocating for her led me to become Certified in Orton-Gillingham and open a tutoring business for dyslexic students of all ages. I've bought Level 1 and am waiting for my first new student to begin so I can use it! (I have another student, but am using a different OG progression with him.)
I completely agree with you about the expense. It kills me to think of paying extra for Whizzimo after the expense of the Level materials! Have you tried the new version of Whizzimo? I've read that it's full of problems, so I haven't bought it yet. Will you be doing a video about Whizzimo?
Thanks and keep up your great work! If you reply that it's ok, I'll post my tutoring website here (in a follow-up comment). If not, that's ok, too; just let me know! Happy New Year 2022! ;-)

    • @Homeschoolific
      @Homeschoolific  Před 2 lety

Hi Kea, I am not using Whizzimo, only because of the amount of set up I would need to do ahead of time was a bit much for my purposes. (at least that’s what it appeared to me). However, you’ll have to consider that I’m not tutoring other children, I might feel differently if that was the case. For my child, the Barton app is working just fine. He’s much older, 14, and before this we did Angela, which some parts of it works well with dyslexic children, so I didn’t need anything extra up front, maybe later. I may consider checking it out again and do a review at some point in the future. I do try to keep it as simple as possible far as schooling, too many running parts get mama overwhelmed 😅. Thank you for stopping and commenting, I went back and checked out some videos about Whizzimo again. I forgotten all about it.

@@Homeschoolific, 🙃PLEASE correct your statement: "the test only checks the minimum IQ is required for the program to work." It's EXTREMELY important for people to know that dyslexia has NOTHING to do with intelligence and IQ! I'm sure you meant the following:
The Barton Screener indicates whether a person is ready to begin at Level (Book) 1 with Barton. If not, the person needs an appropriate phonemic awareness program (such as Foundation in Sounds, which is aligned with Barton). If the person makes 0 errors on the Screener, a more in-depth assessment should be done to ascertain whether the person is dyslexic at all.
Thanks for understanding and, I hope, taking my suggestion. I hope all is well with you and your tutoring!

That is an excellent question, and ironically, we experienced the same thing in Clark county, Nevada. There’s nothing for dyslexic kids there. Nada. Fortunately, for me, one of my friend’s mother was a dyslexic specialist, she got certified…I don’t know forever ago. I’m guessing in California, because that was where they were from. It was through my friends mother, that we were able to find out that my son was profoundly dyslexic. If we wanted it in writing, we had to pay $1500 to go to a special location to have him tested so that he could have accommodations in college. I would look up dyslexic specialist in your area to find one..
But I have a few resources for you. Susan Barton mentioned in one her videos to have your child’s IQ test. That’s an option. If your child’s IQ is not to low, then the dyslexia program that she offers, The Barton program, will work. Another option is the fantastic book overcoming dyslexia. In this book, Sally Shaywitz give you a list of telltale signs to let you know that a child is dyslexic. It was amazing how much I found in there. I was able to trust the specialist findings after reading that book
Honestly, I think both are a great resource. Here’s a link to the audible book, but you might want to get your hands on to the physical copy. www.audible.com/pd/0593149238?source_code=ASSORAP0511160006&share_location=pdp

According to the Federal law, IDEA, a school district is REQUIRED to evaluate a student if the parent or teachers notice problems and request it. Be aware: They often push back, delaying and even refusing to do it! Make your request and all related correspondence in writing (e.g., in email) to the teacher, copying the principal and the Special Ed director at the district. Sometimes they finally do the evaluation, but not a good or full one, and sometimes this forces the parent to get a private evaluation done with either an educational psychologist or a neuropsychologist.
