Given that the Nikon Z 28-75 f/2.8 was essentially an exact copy of the version 1 of this lens, this G2 version is going to be a lot better. I do think it is an interesting option as a standard zoom, especially if you also have one of the wide angles like the 14-30mm (without that, I would generally find 28mm to be too narrow to cover all my needs). It bridges the gap to the telephoto 100-400 nicely for a 3 lens setup that costs and weights less than the 24-120mm and certainly less than the native 24-70 f/2.8. So yes, very interesting option!!!

Hi Matt, fabulous images sir 😍 I’m really surprised this lens came out and thought that Nikon had a deal with tamron when the native lens came out. I’m really pleased to see more options and have always liked tamron lenses. I had the g2 versions of the f mount primes in 35 & 85mm variant as well as 24-70 & 70-200 and was thoroughly impressed. The only downside side for me is the firmware port and wish that they’d utilised the docking station which worked perfectly but that’s a small and negligible issue. Great work tamron and all we need now is for sigma to launch their 1.4’s 😀

The USB-C port is also for programming the lens for cine+video purposes: override the by-wire MF for a consistent 360° mechanical throw... Program focus pulls to one preset distance or between two distances... Even program exactly how long it takes to rack to or between those points. It's weathersealed to the hilt, as well. The Android app even allows you to do all this on-location for the specific scene in front of you. Brilliant.

Hi Matt - nice intro to this lens!
So, this is an interesting development. We were led to believe before when the 28-75mm 2.8 Nikkor was released and the subsequent 17-28mm 2.8, 70-180 2.8 that these lenses were G1 versions of the Tamron lenses already available for Sony E mount, but rehoused by Nikon. We were further under the impression that Nikon would not be letting third party companies manufacture lens that were identical to current Nikon offerings in focal length and aperture.
It seemed like Nikon went around their own 'restriction' by licensing from Tamron this set of 'affordable' trinity zoom lenses, but now, with the introduction of this lens, this theory is thrown to the wind.
It is clear that Nikon is not restricting third parties from manufacturing native Z mount lenses that are the identical focal length and aperture as currently existing Nikkor lenses. This seems a strange move however. If the Nikkor version of this lens was in fact a re-badged G1 Tamron, then it seems like Nikon will have trouble selling this lens going forward now that a G2 is natively available and for less money. I wonder if this signals that Nikon has changed its perspective on this and has decided not to license such lenses from third parties going forward and rather to just allow the third parties to release such lenses directly as they did in the F mount days - well this seem to be the case definitively with the release of this lens. I suppose there is an argument that maybe Nikon is using its own glass in the Nikkor versions irrespective of the design and that alone might make the Nikon a favorable product - but even if this is the case they have not done a great job of signaling this and I suspect the Tamron 28-75 2.8 G2 will largely out sell the Nikkor 28-75 2.8 going forward.
Still, this seems to be very good sign for the Nikon Z mount. It strongly suggests that Nikon will be allowing third parties to make any lens they want for the Z mount, which means we should be seeing many lenses from many other third party manufacturers in the near term. It would not now be surprising if Sigma Art lenses are made available for Z mount soon. This also seems to jibe with the reports that Viltrox will be making 1.4 and 1.2 primes of focal lengths that already exist in the Z mount Nikkor lineup.
The bottom line is that Sony just lost one of its last advantages over Nikon - more lens choice. Recently this advantage has been dwindling with all the releases of Nikkor glass, but now that the third party manufacturers are fully in the game there is no more Sony advantage in this respect whatsoever.
Ironically, to the contrary, this seem to now be an advantage for Nikon as Nikon does not intentionally cripple third party lenses the way that Sony does (limiting FPS on third party glass etc.). As such third party glass on a Nikon will be more functional than it would be on a Sony making it even more useful.
This is another surprising, but favorable turn of events for Nikon - who in recent times seems to be unstoppable. With the future introduction of a Z5II, Z6III and possibly Z80/90 (D500 replacement) there will be nothing left lacking in the Z mount system in which Nikon is not on par or superior to all competitors - as it stands the lack of these products are all that stand in the way of Nikon being the best all around system out there and we all suspect that these products are on the near term horizon.
Great time to be a Nikon shooter - but then again, when really was it not?
    -PD

Brilliant, thanks Matt. Not a lens i will be buying - simply because i already have the Z equivalent which I bought when I got my first Z body - the Z6. Before i switched to the Z system I had a D500 and a D 850 and my 24-70 & 70-200 lenses were both Tamron "G2" models and were both absolutely brilliant and half the price of the Nikon equivalents at the time. I also remember watching various CZcams reviews here on CZcams, especially the one regarding the last generation F-mount Nikon 70-200 v the Tamron 70-200 G2 and almost every review at that time said the Tamron out performed the latest Nikon as well as being half the price. It was a no-brainer. I am really happy with my Z 24-70 f/2.8 and my Z 70-200 f/2.8 and have no intention to change either but it is great that people are now getting more and more options to consider.

But does it bite the ankles of the all mighty Nikon Z 24-70 f2.8 S? I wonder how it compares in AF speed to the Nikon 24-70 2.8 , in my experience it's Nikon's fastest focusing lense so far.
I already have the 35-150 2-2.8 and it's slower , nothing extreme but noticable , inclduing slower start-up time for my Z9
    SO how is it?

The scary thing is that I recently bought the Nikon 70-180 ... and now maybe Tamron will soon release the version G2 of that lens for Nikon Z???

I really thought this would be a safe video to watch as I have no desire to get this lens (I have the Nikon 24-70 f4 and rarely use it). But dang it, you talked up the Zf again. I'm hanging in there to see what the Z6iii brings to the table. Now, it does seem to be a right good lens. I do like what Tamron has done and I still use my Tamron 70-200 (but again, not all that much).
But a question: Can Capture One suppress the purple fringing that is happening?

The only thing that would be great in the future, more lenses with aperture ring for Nikon, it really makes a difference, they look so clinical, mechanical somehow, at least for smaller size cameras like Zf, I believe ZfR is coming soon after Z7 III, Nikon should try to downsize their lenses without waiting for Canon to do it -The reason i'm saying all this...all the lenses made in the 60's, 70's,80's are still bought and searched by nikon z users, for the character and feeling of aperture ring
