    Thank you for this succinct, informative video. I have a G9 and am still learning how to use it, and did install the latest 2.0 firmware, so I'm good to go. For my needs, it should be more than sufficient. I appreciate and thank you for being straightforward with no hype. Cheers from Louisiana!

    I owned a GH4 and later added the GH5 then, when the G9 was released (and the initial price was lowered), I sold the GH4 and that paid for 50% of the G9. Since I am a proper hybrid shooter, I find the combination is perfect; the G9 is my B Cam and the GH5 is my backup stills camera.
    A few weeks ago I was asked to shoot a Soccer match and the G9 was on a monopod with the 35-100 f2.8 and the GH5 was on a strap around my neck (the neck strap was still in the original box) with the 12-35 f2.8

    Honestly, this is one of the best comparisons I've ever seen on youtube. I'm currently in the process of deciding which I'm going to go for, as right now I can currently afford the G9 and don't have a camera, but in about 3 months I can afford the GH5 so just deciding whether it's worth the wait.
    Thank you for this review and comparison, it was brilliantly presented and went through literally everything I needed to know about without you making it really wordy and complicated like some other youtubers! Great work man, and thank you! I think I'm going to hold out for just a few more months and go with the GH5 :D

I still am not 100% sure on what camera I will buy, that will also depend on the quality of the lenses and their price for each line of cameras. It really depends on what you do. If you are always in control behind the camera, and you need good video, Panasonic is probably better if you're shooting slow moving subjects.
      If you're shooting sports/wildlife whether in video or photos and need powerful AF, Sony is the only system I would trust.

  • @professionalpotato4764

    Do you think unlimited record limit and the XLR adapter is a valid reason to pick GH5 over G9? I'm trying to get something that's versatile and will suit many situations.
    I'm still rather new, and have no niche, so I don't want to spend too much on my gear. I just want it to work without getting in the way.

      @FabledFew  Před 3 lety +1

      Depends, do you find yourself shooting takes longer than 30minutes? If so, then yes. If not, you can get a much faster camera, and just use a small external audio recorder for your XLR audio needs. Really depends on what type of shoots you usually do.

    I do hear 60p electronical shutter for photos, is this not a hidden 6K RAW video option (can you film/photo in panasonic RAW and then batch process to prores 422...)? How many seconds can you manage shooting 60p RAW?

    • @FabledFew
      @FabledFew  Před 3 lety +1

      The 60p electronic shutter for photos is limited to 8mpx or 4K. They call it 4K Photo mode. The G9 can also do 30p at around 5.2K, and when you connect your SD card to the computer, you'll find a 10bit 5.2K file, albeit at 3:2 aspect ratio. Check out this video where I talk all about it: czcams.com/video/whIbE5AEAvU/video.html

    • @pieterpauwelbeelaerts5995
      @pieterpauwelbeelaerts5995 Před 3 lety

      @@FabledFew yes, the 5.2K mode is interesting. I have a GH5 and used the 4:3 anamorphic 6K mode once with a sirui anamorphic prime 1,33x in order to get close to 16:9 in full resolution. The 3:2 mode probably is even better for that purpose, thank you for making me aware of that! I will check it out... Unfortunately it is still h265, and when comparing to BRAW footage from blackmagic pocket 4K, there are less colors. Though GH5 is sharper and it has IBIS. I was looking at G9 for a body with IBIS that has a better colorimetry or sensor then GH5, to bypass the internal codecs, but it seems using an external recorder with GH5 is what I need for my purpose (shooting in prores 422 HQ and 4K).

  • @gracenotes5379
    @gracenotes5379 Před 3 lety

    Nice review, Mohammad, and very fair. Having owned both I find myself in agreement with your comparisons. Since I care nothing about photography, I'll say this about shooting video. Ease of use, in my book, counts for a lot.
    Context also has to be a factor that cannot be discounted in considering which camera to choose.
    If you're a content creator for youtube---do you really need All-I and 400 megabits files?
    Isn't Long GOP, 10 bit more than enough for youtube and other most other contexts???
    I know professional S1H owners who opt to shoot video in Long GOP. There is such a thing as "overkill." How is "overkill" determined? By considering Context.
    What I'm driving at is this: I find the G9 better for video because of the improvement in color and image quality, better IBIS---and for simplicity of use. The image is killer good.
    Anamorphic would be nice, but not necessary. I have other cameras for that if I need it.
    DCI would be nice---again, but not necessary.
    Ease and simplicity, on the other hand, are necessary---essential. And the G9 has it.
    Man, is this thing fun to shoot!
    And yes, I've got to say it, if it were only better in lowlight. ;-(

      I agree. If only it was clean up to ISO 3200, it'd be the perfect camera. If only.

      @@FabledFew I'm no technocrat, but I don't see why they could not build a MFT camera with dual channel ISOs like the S5 and S1H. You could have the second kick in at 3200. That would really be fantastic.
      There's a LOT to be said for MFT cameras like this in general. The longer reach of lenses for one is a very important feature---much more than a wider field of view in, say, shooting wildlife. With sufficient light the MFT sensor is far superior in shooting intimate bird and animal shots, as well as shooting people from a distance.
      If higher, cleaner ISOs were implemented in MFT cameras they would have a whole new birth on the mirrorless market. And at longer focal lengths that precious bokeh is beautifully present.
      I, personally, actually prefer the simplicity of use of the G9. The only thing I don't care for thus far is the exposure of the slow motion being determined internally...and no 120. But, IMO, it's made up for with the better skin tones and improved color science. It would be great if it had been made to use that great Panasonic XLR unit they made. What a terrific tool for talking heads and interview shooting.
      Thanks again for your comparison.

      @@avarmadillo better skin tones is a must for me, I have enormous difficulty getting good looking caucasian skin tones out of GH5 video in v-log!!! (if you compare to blackmagic pocket 4k or canon, they give almost instantly OK looking results). But unfortunately bpcc4k isn't ergonomical... Therefore I am looking at this G9, but the lack of codecs (even for social media use), makes it a difficult choice for delicate skin tones. Now, da vinci resolve free version unfortunately doesn't import GH5 footage, I have to transcode everything to prores which makes me wonder if atomos ninja V will gain better skin tones with gh5 even, or g9, then the internal codecs.

    I actually have the G9 and film with it. I hate saying it but not sure if there's going to be more Panasonic cameras

      @FabledFew  Před 3 lety +1

      You mean in the MFT line-up? Panasonic's full-frame S line is going strong, and Panasonic did say that they're working on the next GH camera, but it might not be out soon. It all depends on the sensor, and so far, there hasn't been a new MFT sensor.

    Just got the g9 as a b cam and notice that the video quality is quite different imo, the gh5 seems to have a more filmic quality (which I love) than the g9. What’s your opinion?

    • @FabledFew

      10 minutes for 4K 60fps, 30 minutes for everything else.

      Mohammad Rezaie thank you. If i go with ninja v as an external recorder via hdmi it will be the same? Or in the same price range GH5 it’s a better option?

    • @FabledFew
      @FabledFew  Před 4 lety +1

      No, there are no record limits with the Ninja V. If you get the Ninja V, you also get access to 4K60FPS at 10bit (internal is 8bit only) so if you do require that, then it's a great purchase because it also doubles as a monitor. But if you don't, and you need a more compact setup, the GH5 would be a better purchase. GH5 is around $1600 now, which is roughly what a G9 + Ninja V would cost you.
