- Flashback to Australia Day in 1983 as Dennis Lillee and Jeff Thomson make a mess of England's top order, taking three wickets in quick succession in front of a packed Sydney Cricket Ground crowd
- Sport
Lillee had the greatest gift in test cricket ,the late outswinger to the right hander. His action was just perfect and he could swing it at will.Extremely wily, greatest competitor.
The Best Ever Pacer Duo of Australia Dennis Lillee and Jeff Thompson. A Big Salute to them.

Best Years 80`s...
This was the great year that we saw them return together in the ODI's for the last time, never to see again. Not as fast as mid 70's but still destructive. You'll never see the Hill like that ever again either! Great times.

Not same class in wonder McGrath , Courtney Walsh , Ambrose and swing sultan Akram ...their record proves
Man look at the swing from Lillee to bowl Gower. Many past cricketers have said he's the greatest bowler they've ever faced. Such skill on display a boomerang inswinger to the left hander and a well disguised off cutter to Alan Lamb
yeah - love it. But then the movement off the wicket going the other way to trap Lamb. Superb!
@@Fuzcapp yeah mate. I think he was more toward the latter part of his career in this. When he started he was rapid- didn't care too much about swing and seam. But then that back injury forced him to develop crafty skills like in this video. What a champ
@@shahmianas8512 this was the 82-3 Australian Summer. Lillee retired at end of the next season and was coming off a knee injury at this time. Thommo was toward the end also, never being the same (apart from a few occasions) after destroying his shoulder in 1976.
@@couldabeenanything Sad that we don't see characters like these in the game anymore. All good boys 'yes we played well' 'we need to play well tomorrow'. Warnie used to go to press conferences and say I'm gonna destroy x batsmans career this series 😂
@@shahmianas8512 McGrath would predict 5-0 series wins, every series, regardless of location or any other factor. Supreme confidence!
Jeff Thompson One Of the Finest Bowlers Australia has ever produced.
Lawry predicted Gower's wicket before the first ball. Great reader of the game!
Open neck and chains, mullets and moe’s ! The cool days of cricket
Dennis Lillee and Hadlee were absolute legends. Would have loved to have faced up to both of those lads in their prime. The moustache was what made them that little bit more fierce for me.. rhythm, swing, seam, guile, talent and character. One of my favourite eras of cricket to watch.. Gower was classy too very laid back approach to batting.
Lillee and Thomson, the greatest
Thomson was 6'1"", Lillee 6' neat. This clip was near the end for both of them. Mid 1970's , they were fearsome,& along with the West Indians squadron of fast bowlers to follow, hastened the introduction of helmets. Ask England & West Indies batsmen about them. They were scary enough watching them at full tilt on the TV.
Crickets golden age from mid-70's to mid-80's
Thommo is 5'11
Malcolm Marshall said of Dennis Lillee “such control man”
Malcolm Marshall came to the greatest in Lillee and asked him to teach him how to bowl the legcutter and outswinger, which DK surely did. Marshall is the best overseas quick to come to Australia. Dennis is the greatest paceman of all time. Absolute master.
@@graemealexander8804 Marshal was greatest. Lillie never bowled in subcontinent. Macgrath was better than Lillie
@@vladdracula9586 Umm fact check there dude. DK did tour the subcontinent, I'll let you work out who & where. McGrath is a tier below, widely agreed in Australia. DK twice took 12 wkts in Tests against World XI's, 12/89 & 12/92. He took 103 unaccounted Test Wkts in SuperTests, against the mighty West Indies & World XI's & still holds the world record for the most Test wkts in a Calendar Year by a fast bowler, 85. He took 458wkts in just 89 Tests, 29x 5wkt hauls and 9x 10wkt hauls. In his era, Australia refused to play minnows. Marshall? So why does Viv Richards rate Dennis as the greatest, as does Clive Lloyd, Richard Hadlee & everyone that saw him? Tony Cosier rates him as the best fast bowler ever to play on Carribean shores. I've spoken to Joel Garner, who rates Dennis the best. Easily the greatest.
@@graemealexander8804 What's his record in Subcontinent?? And what's Macgrath's record?? If McGrath gets those uncoverd pitches then he would get 100-200 more wicket. Viv rate him highly because he played against him. Marshall is from same team. Lillie is a great bowler but not the best
That swing though 🔥
A golden era.
Dennis Lillee had a beautiful bowling action
Masterpiece of fast bowling can only b commented on such a great vid upload of lily & Thomson bowling
this was really great of great lilly ball to Gower showed outswinger angle but came in in the air and not after pitching.this is armery outswinger for right handed batsmen.Hadlee n Botham too had this skill.
Lillee Lillee Lillee .. Thomson was super quick 🇦🇺
Exciting times in Test Cricket. Even towards the end of his career he was player of the series.
Ha Ha Bill Lawry "Thompson beats Allan Lamb all ends up" when he nicked off to Marsh - camera pans to Allan Lamb leaning on his bat at the non strikers end. Gotta Love Bill.
DK Lillee is the greatest fast bowler ever !
Great fast bowling pair
Lillie -swing and accuracy
Thomo -pace and bounce
It's a great contrast of styles. Thommo managed to fit some wildly tangled maneuvers into his delivery while Lillie's action was just so smooth. Both effective though.
And then Max Walker as the change up - how's that for a unique action?!

Kim Hughes was once asked 'what was the best way to play Thommo'. His answer, 'at the other end'!
Ah the memories. Remember, Lillee did that to Gower in Australia, with a Kookaburra ball. Hooped it in through the gate, then bowled an off cutter to trap Lamb plump in front. Greatest fast bowler of all time. Bar none.
McGrath was less pretty but better. Marshall was just better in every way.
@@haydenbing5832 Marshall had great bowlers around him and he was able to exploit that. Lillee was often used as a stock bowler when England were on top. I think the game was mire defensive in Lillees time and if you compare him to any other bowler of his time, he was far superior. I loved Macco,, don't get me wrong, but as he is second to Lillee for mine. Lillee was a lion hearted masterpiece.
The early white ball was 2 piece. It swung like a dunny door.

Back when real men played cricket 🔥
and now??
Lily the.gem of fast bowlers
Went to Adelaide Oval in 1980 to see SA v QLD in a Shield match primarily to see the great Thommo bowl as a 10yo. Remember watching Lillee at Adelaide Oval v Pakistan in 83/84 and I am so glad of those memories.
By this time both great fast bowlers lost considerable amount of pace however still so effective
Thomson through a fielding accident, dislocated his shoulder, never the same afterwards. Though, many don't know that the recorded speeds of 160.45kmh & 160.7kmh, were aftee this injury. Much quicker prior.
Lillee, after his 4 spinal fractures, was recorded at 155.7kmh. He, according to the great photographer, Patrick Eager, was at his fastest, most lethal & furious in 1972. Terrifying apparently. Could have nudged the 100mph mark.
Dennis Lillee's unofficial record is 89 Tests, 458 wkts @ 23.91, including 103 wkts Vs WSC West Indies in SuperTests & World XI matches. 29x 5wkt hauls & 9x 10wkt hauls, Best Bowling 12/89 vs WSC World XI & 12/92 vs 1972 World XI. He's the greatest I've seen in my lifetime. Thomson the quickest. They both formed the best opening bowling attack I've ever seen.

It's so good to watch cricket back in the days when there was no DRS!
Lamb absolutely smashed that and it was going down leg anyway lol. I like DRS, adds an extra element of tactics (deciding whether or not to save reviews etc)
When you learn that Jeff trained as a javelin thrower you suddenly realise his technique isn't bad at all. Yes, it's a sling but does it matter when you generate the sort of pace he did? Imagine him throwing javelins at the batsmen and you have a new blood-sport.
Those little boys must have been terrified.

Golden days, real men.

Both are 5 11 still they were lethal
Shows you don’t need height for pace bowling
If u Are near 6 feet than How much more height u need to be a pacer my friend😂😂😂
There is a video on CZcams where an academic from the University of WA talks about a way that Thommo generated his pace. It's the range of movement he goes through with his action and putting all his muscles on full stretch. This means he can generate pace without having to be as tall. Interesting theory.
Lamb was dismissed by the off-cutter.Lillee loved setting up batsmen with bouncers and then bowl an off-cutter close to the stumps that was always very accurate.Gower could swing like a rusty gate because he wanted to hit boundaries right from the get-go and Tavare's footwork wasn't good enough against top class bowling.
is that Jim Tavare???? :-)
@@Fuzcapp No. it's Chris, the zookeeper.

Here legendary Dennis Lillee looks a little bit past his prime
Yes, he retired the following season, aged 34.
The ball he took Gower's wicket with here was still unbelievable.
Thompson said he can bowl 10 kmph extra according to current rules
Thompson is just a typical " things were better in my days " old man.
@@jatin123ize good old days buddy.... Today's cricket is a joke....

I heard Thompson was the fastest there ever was........but I don't think he bowled faster than Akhtar or even Lee, Tait.......may be he was passed his prime...idk....
He had a major shoulder injury which slowed him in the 80s. In the mid 70s he was much quicker..
First
That was missing leg stump by a foot. Australian umpires eh
By a foot? Stop it lol
Vantheman12 Welshman u r part right.one must be partial to truth.nobody can deny lilly 's greatness.here also umpire is wrong.if we see properly ball pitched in the line of off stump n came back sharply only to leave the stumps.it was an a big off cutter.in fact lilly was much more famous for his world-class armery outswinger n perfect leg cutter.he even used to move the ball away in in swinger action.one thing is also true that the ball would leave the stump but not by one foot .
mazrimalthor Lillee was Great. However, the Aussie umpires did bend to his greatness. If that makes sense.
I say! Lamb was never out. That was going down leg side, what what!
What a kick in the knickers!
3 wickets is a rout?? Video sux
Still don't believe that Thompson ever bowled 100mph
Lol those day batsmen had weak techniques
Yeah, but those days they were only semi professional and did not play as much and had none of the tools that today's teams have such as video analysis, batting coaches etc.
Really? Viv Richards would smash all bowlers today, on the featherbeds they bat on, shorter boundaries & bullet like bats. Tougher matches in that era, unlimited bouncers etc.
@@graemealexander8804 Gavaskar wasn't bad either, n' Clive Lloyd.
Wasim and waqar more batter pair than both lilli and thomson
Lambs LBW was going way down leg side, but what do you expect from Aussie umpires
Hey, why back then Aussies copped the same, as did other teams. That is why DRS was brought in. Damien Martyn was given out twice by Umpire Bucknor in England LBW when it was obvious Martyn had hit the ball. Stupid comment from you.
he was back in his crease. smashing middle and leg for mine

Thomo the greatest and fastest bowler ever!
ugliest bowling action ever from Thomson ?
You never saw Max HN Walker, did you. Or are you just trying to be a bummer?
Hmmm who would be the best judge of what is and isn't ugly? Someone ill informed asking questions on here or Richie Benaud? I think Richie Benaud every time. Do you understand the term ugly. Max Walker was called 'Tangles' by his mates... wonder why? Proctor, Bob Willis before he adapted it in later years, Tony Greig both his types of bowling. Now they're ugly.
He stated , ''Jeff Thomson, unorthodox, but he has one of the most marvellous bowling action's he's ever seen!'' Now marvellous and ugly do NOT go together. So to answer you question, nah you're talking rubbish!!! It was smooth, perfectly side-on , in a game that should be played side-on and enabled not only his fantastic speed , but kept the ball hidden from batsmen thus making it almost impossible to see what Thommo was trying to do with the seam. Which as Thommo admitted, didn't really matter as he , other than getting it down there as fast as possible, had little idea either, even said sometimes actually forgot which way the ball was supposed to go with respect to the seam position. He walked down and asked Chappel once in an over , Chappel thought he was joking.
