  • In November of 1913, the worst storm in the Great Lakes history hit the region with a fury that remains legendary today. With 12 ships lost with all hands and over 20 more wrecked, this “White Hurricane” caused more damage and claimed more lives than any other single storm on the Great Lakes. Come learn the dramatic tale of shipwreck and destruction that was wrought by this “King of Storms” that has never been seen since on the Great Lakes.
As a local history teacher and part time Great Lakes sailor, Jeff Thomas draws on both experiences to tell the story of Great Lakes shipwrecks. He finds the small details that brings the stories to life in a story-telling experience that puts the viewer “in the moment” of these dramatic tales.
This Program was presented to the Association of Lifelong Learners at ACC on May 2, 2023, in Alpena, MI. Our Thanks to Jeff for another outstanding Program.

This was the moment when people realized how ferocious the Great Lakes really can be. Even today you occasionally hear of a ship being lost on one of them, especially in October and November. It greatly improved weather forecasting and people’s understanding of the need to respect these waters.

Excellent presentation of a very important period of our country's history. It's great to have this perspective as most people who live outside of this region haven't a clue about the perils and dangers that the weather the Great Lakes presented to the mariners who lived and died trying to provide for their families. I'm an avid sea history buff. I really appreciate your work and what you have shared. Thanks so much!

Thoroughly enjoy his presentations. The seldom heard details. The personal stories make it so much more real.

Super good job sir... all my life I've been in keweenaw county, diver, rockhounding. I never heard the story of the full rock incident. I dove all around there, and was surprised to see that there r actually 2 islands each with a lighthouse. And the bugs are the worst on that island. I'm 54 yrs old, and never heard of the gold medal award either. What a shame.

I'm not a shipwreck hunter, (not yet, at least) but James Carruthers is my personal Great Lakes Holy Grail. Search all you want for Le Griffon, I want to see someone find James Carruthers.

The key to survival is staying calm and have a plan you know to do if you find yourself in the water. Don't go out on the big lakes without basic survival training at the very least.

When you got to marjorie's mother it is indeed sad. Actually got tears in my eyes over it and I'm not one to cry over a shipwreck video

To me, the James Curruthers is the King of ships lost in this storm. 550 Ft long and on her 3rd voyage. The biggest ship on the great lakes at that time. And the wreck has never been found.

JEFF THOMAS BRINGS THE BEST OF 2 WORLDS TO HIS PRESENTATIONS. During the Summers, he is himself a sailor. The rest of the year he teaches High school History. Ric Mixter, who got to be a big deal lecturing about the Edmund Fitzgerald is talked-about...mostly by himself...but IN MY OPINION, Jeff's got him beaten. He's the best!❤

Those instantly forming Great Lakes gales churn up short length fresh water waves that seem to hit the free-board of big cargo ships in such quick succession they appear to crawl right up over the decks. I think that's one of those weather phenomenons where I'd rather be somewhere else . . . czcams.com/video/0viKJUhDB1M/video.html

Two years ago my son found a piece of coal on lighthouse beach in Port Huron.. as you had said the price was loaded with coal, which makes me wonder if the coal was from the Price a few miles north.
