2008 Subaru - Dim Headlight - Fixed

  • The passenger side headlight on my 2008 Subaru Outback was very dim when on 'low' beam and would turn off completely when switched to 'high' beam. Replacing the DLR (Daylight Running Light) module (as demonstrated in other videos on CZcams), did not correct the problem and was a major pain in the neck to change anyway.
I had replaced both bulbs with new ones and made sure the bulbs were seated properly in the headlight assembly (also discussed on many forums). They were still dim.
After several hours scouring the internet, I came across a comment from someone that mentioned the fuses. I had used a test light to check for voltage at the fuses but, as mentioned in the video, had done it incorrectly. Had I tested it correctly, I would have found the blown fuse before doing a lot of unnecessary work. Replacing the fuse corrected the problem, thankfully!
Apparently, both headlights share wiring but have independent fuses. If one goes out, the other fuse doesn't allow enough current to allow the other headlight work properly. That being said, if you had a dim driver-side headlight and a bright passenger headlight, this should fix it by replacing the other fuse (explained in the video).
I'm not positive, but believe this fix will work on Outbacks (and maybe other trims) from 2005-2009. It may also work on other models.

Both mine stopped working. I just replaced fuse 18. The 2 15 amp fuses were the first ones I checked. But if u have anymore issues with non working headlights. Try the fuse in the cabin on 18. I have same exact car. Have u had reverse light issues cuz mine won't work. Can't figure out if it's worse or what.

So did you figure out how the light was working with a blown fuse, but it was dim? Are they somehow connected where one affects the other?

Great question! The answer is "kind of, but not really". This article www.subaruforester.org/threads/one-headlight-bright-others-dim-its-probably-a-fuse.6139/ gives the best explination I could find. You might want to take a look. Hope it helps.
