Five Different Ways To Make Bread Over A Campfire

- This video is a response to Beatsafari101 in London, who asked to see how I make bread outdoors.
I start with bannock made from Bisquick and select from five alternative cooking methods: (1) ash cooking, (2) frying, (3) roasting, (4) baking or (5) boiling. If I want the bread to be sweet, I add brown sugar, cinnamon and raisons. If I want a healthy breakfast, I add oatmeal. Sometimes I cook bannock in an orange rind or an onion peal.
Homemade Bisquick Mix:
4 cups flour
3 tsp baking powder
1 tsp salt
2 tsp sugar
1/2 cup vegetable shortening or butter
Bread is more than just a food. Think of how the word is used: Work that earns a solid income is often referred to as "bread and butter." The words "bread" and "dough" are slang for cash. When people "break bread" they share more than just a meal; they come together in both body and spirit.
It's not surprising that making bread outdoors is special. From the beginning of recorded history, bread has been a vital food source for people around the globe. Over the centuries, it has traveled and evolved, reflecting both the unity and diversity of human culture, and the ability of people to adapt to their environment.

Sandy, thanks for watching and commenting, my busy friend. My grandson is visiting this week. He saw me making this video, became hungry and wanted to go hiking where I made the bread. So, today we went hiking in the same area. So cool! Don't work too hard. Ken
Short, simple and cool. Thanks
Love your channel, Ken. Thanks for all the good tips and footage.
Thanks for loving my channel astrogypsy. Much appreciated my friend ...ken
You seem so smiley and zen while you stir that bannock. Like a really thin Buddha! Thanks for sharing your wilderness knowledge with us! I make a bannock type bread here at home with just flour, water, live yeast, sugar and salt and everyone loves it. I hope to use your methods to make my bread in the bush. I will be cooking for some young loggers and goatherds this summer [my kids and other hard workers], following them around our family's land doing selective logging and reconditioning of the ecosystem to support a silvopasture for a future deer farm. I will think of you and your teachings often this summer, I'm sure. Peace!
Thanks for watching and taking time to comment. Happy New Year, Ken

Several briquettes were used to get a quick coal bed. They were from a brand that states chemicals were not added The coals on top were from native wood.
Thanks Cassia!
Awesome. My grandpa (mother's side) lives in Sofia, Bulgaria. Every summer we go see him, and he takes us out into the woods and we do stuff like this. He says we need to learn how to live without modern technology, just in case it fails us. You actually look a lot like him. Will definitely share this with him. We usually just ash cook (onions or apples, even dragon fruit one time) or plank it. But it will be good to have different techniques :3
Kaori Nguyen Hi Kaori. Thanks for commenting and sharing. You're feedback means a great deal to me. ATB, Ken
Awesome. Thank You.

Thanks I enjoy you videos very much, my wife and I spend are free time in the back country of British Columbia. we are always looking for new ideas in videos to field test, again thank you very much, and keep up the great work.
Just subscribed! I've been cooking eggs, bacon and sausage every Sunday (weather permitting) over an open fire since 2005. NOTHING compares.
Thanks for the sub, Afleet. I agree that nothing compare to cooking over an open fire. Stay tuned for more outdoor cooking ….. ATB, Ken
Your question was excellent and this video was fun & tasty to make. My favorite is plank cooking. It is easy to control the heat, so none of the bread burns. AND it requires no tools. It is great for backpacking~ Orange muffins come in second. Each method is excellent in its own way. Take care, my friend. Ken
Your way of food making at outdoors is amazing Ken. I am sad that I could not have a chance to taste your lovely food :)) Thank you very much for this great video.Have a joyful weekend my dear!!
wow thanks allot! you are an inspiration

Really enjoy your video's,, U keep it plain n simple, , I read a quote one time that said,,, a man is happiest who's pleasure's R the simplest.
Great video I like the hash cake technic
Thank you for your reply, ok sorry have been very busy. The way's you have shown, to cook outdoor's bread are amazing, although not unknown to me. Please keep showing people that they can do, make those thing's that we all seem to feel we can only buy. People have forgotten that before the store, hypermarket, supermarket etc. we made all the thing's we as people needed. Fine it's easy to buy it ready made but there is a day coming when the good's will not be available in the never ending store shelf. So please keep on telling people how too.. God bless all...
+Tony Harris Thanks for watching Tony and taking time to comment. Stay tuned. I soon will upload a video on making yeast bread over a campfire.... ken
