tip: add some motion blur between the clips to make it look even smoother
Great tip! 👍
I was going to say the same
How do you add motion blur?

I will def subscribe to your channel . Keep them coming! I am a nurse full time, but I love video editing in my free time. I love filming travel and sports. I followed this tutorial to make a beautiful transition in a travel video I just created. It takes my video to a completely different level. Thank you!
Glad it was helpful David!
Great tutorial! I am totally new to FCP and this was a big help. Definitely will add this to my "tool bag".
Thanks Adrian, so glad this helped you in Final Cut Pro!
Thank you so much ...very clear ⋯
You're welcome!
Super easy to follow and you didn’t take 25min to explain like everyone else. Thanks for the tutorial!
Glad it was helpful!
This helped me alot thank you so much
Glad it helped!
Great info! Thanks for the explanation
You're welcome, thanks so much for the comment!
Thanks dude! Quick and easy tutorial.. Two thumbs up!
You're welcome!
One important notice% you forgot to animate "control points", that's why after changing the shape of the mask it keeps final type of the shape and didn't change it during timeline. It could be seen when you scroll back by the clip. If you want to change mask during the clip (form of object is changing) - you have to also animate the control points ;)
Just found that out too, it works much better with control points keyframes on
Ahh I hope this explains my problem! The points will not move :( But perhaps I should also make the control points yellow, I'll try!
This was really helpful, thank you!
Your welcome glad you enjoyed it
Thank you so much for this. It really helped me on this recent video im editing now.
You’re welcome Guyatian so glad this helped your video! Hope it turned out ok!
very good coaching ,,, thanks this would help
You are welcome!

Very useful! I never tried my hands on masking, will do it now 🙂
HerHappyFace good luck with it! We’ve also got a new tutorial tomorrow about how to ‘Mask without masking’ coming out this week too
To me editing is really alien. As a doctor I need a hobby beside work and I think I just found one. Smooth transition! Thank you for your effort and I subscribed.
You can do it! We have a few videos on iMovie on here and it's a great place to start as it's much easier than FCPX. Hope this helps
Great video you just made editing so much easier
Glad to hear it!
I’m just learning about masking. I can hardly wait to hone my skills in this area. Thank you for such an informative tutorial.
You are so welcome Roderick!
did you hone your skills? this a reply 2 years later.
amazing thank you.....
You're welcome 😊
Yeahhh Thanks for teaching us
My pleasure
Great. Thanks!
You're welcome!
Really great video I recently shot a video just like this and watched yours for inspiration. My flow isn't as good as your yet but I'll keep trying until I get there. Keep it going
Thanks so much for the comment, you’ll get there... I’m still learning too!
tips : the end of first clip and the start of the second clip should be in the same color hue
eg : shot end at the grass and start with a guy with green shirt
So don't begin with green and jump to red?
love the content man I'm getting really excited to start using final cut pro after using imovie for what seems like forever lol
You're welcome!
Great vid!
Thanks so much!
Thanks! I subscribed!!!!
Thanks so much! Welcome to the channel!
@@editorskeys Thanks!
Goooood
That was good. yes this is the first time that I have used masking - or even heard of it.
Hey Sebastian, that’s great, glad I could help you learning something new!
this is really cool. I've been teaching myself video editing and I can already tell this is a skill that would take me multiple attempts in order to feel out what looks right. thanks for the tutorial
Most definitely. The other day a friend told me that he could do what I do for a living and I explained to him that editing is much more than just stringing clips together. It's about style, pacing, attention to detail, and an overall them that connects everything. I also made a masking tutorial check it out if you have the time. My channel is dedicated to making people who are serious a whole lot better than they are now by covering the basics and setting a strong foundation
Rob Tha Creative thanks man. I appreciate the response. Its def more complex than it looks especially when using FCPX. For me, the timing and pace is everything especially for comedic effect. I’m actually practicing masking as i write this so I’ll def check it out
@@JR-sd3fk Thanks I appreciate ya!
Pixel film studios played an ad right before I watched this. Same subject and all.. they didn’t count on you having such a clear video
Haha thanks Jay!
Good tip!
Thanks Svetlin!
nice tutorial
Nice 👍 thanks i am reading other comments to for how to do it better 👏🏼
No problem 👍
Whenever i blade the tool it the image at the start it just drops down to the other layer how do I stop final cut from doing this....
There should be two arrows near the title of your project (below the render window). Click the right button and it should return you to your original layer.
I LOVE YOU
We love you too!
First time I tried masking, all I used was the "elements" Shapes Generator. You weren't the first to show me the "Draw Mask" effects. It was nice to find. Stupid thing I learned after using it three times...
You could use it more than once on a frame. Just have to be careful to mark the keyframes on the transform AND control points to make sure you have coherence over the section. The control points are not keyframable (at least so far as I have tried). The number of control points is the same across the segment. If you end up adding more during the process, you will have to go back and handle them in the previous frames.
Nice and informative video! I used your tips in my latest vid, thanks a lot :)
I discovered an important thing though... When you tick to add keyframes under "Transforms", you are actually only moving the entire mask and the only thing changing, in this case, is its position, which is why some of the control points are not in their right place anymore in any frame except the last one. If you would tick the plus next to "Control Points" instead, the mask would transform more accurately after the same process is done.
Hope this helps!
Cheers
yes!! This is the proper way! Works so well! Thanks a lot!
So doing it this way, you wouldn't utilize the "Transforms" tab at all?
Alecia Custodio I didn't do any adjustments. It worked perfectly👍🏻
@@aleciacustodio2061 The control points keyframe allows you to adjust the individual control points, but if you turn on the keyframes for transforms it allows yout o move the entire mask as one entity.
@@NickMak No it doesn't. The transform affects the image itself, not the mask. ABTV's comment is correct and I commented the same a while back. You can keyframe the top for all control points and proceed to move the points as shown in the video.
This was a great explanation to masking. Very easy to follow! Appreciate this video
Whenever I move the key frames, do I have too re click the ''Transforms'' buttons each time after I make a slight change to make the animation work? or does it record the mask automatically?
but as my frames move my shape changes and if i change the points of the mask it changes all the points of the mask?? please help??
You have to select "Control Points" when he selects the Transform elements as well. At 4:20

I like how you use this as a transition - that’s an interesting use I hadn’t thought of. But man, you are doing it the painful way! Much easier to use Motion or one of the dozens of motion tracking plugins available.
is there a video on how to do that
*Good stuff, and thank you; subscribed!* ... _You should have many more subscriptions! I don’t get it how even the best videos have a few dozen dislikes; there are many grudge-based folks out there! (and yours belongs amongst the best videos; it has aside from the professionalism itself a sprightly, buoyant mood; and thank you for that, too)_
Thank you so much Dr Walter. Really appreciate you taking your time out to write a kind comment! Means a lot, thanks!
At 8:31, how do you get the storyline to go on the bottom row so that the original masked clip is above? Every time I try to add a new clip after the mask, it always deletes it and just plays the next clip...
what command did you use to make the speed ramp right there the cursor was?
Love from india ❤️ bro... thanks for this important video...
You're welcome!
Thank you.
Thank you!
mu man whats good i hope you still respond. so whenever i do this i start out great but when i am done the mask on the first frame is totally shifted like halfway. how do i get this right
I think if include the backpack, u would have a better quality as the wall of the second clip is also black. Both can fit in very comfortably without the viewer notice major edges like the shirt did.
Hey yes you can sometimes do that if the objects are similar colours like you mention. Good tip.
I think the reason you had to readjust the control points at the start of the transition and that they weren’t moving was because you didn’t click a key frame for control points at the start, only transform.
^ great video other than this
I wanted to if i have motion tracking in motion 5, do I need any motion tracking plugins in finalcut pro?
I have trouble speed ramping the transition. All my Mask points just move and mess up the whole transition. Any ideas ideas why this might be happening? Thanks :)
First time using mask!
Really informative, creative, and eye-opening. Thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great video. So helpful: I subscribed!! Q for ya: how do u get to speed ramping?
Hey we have a speed video on the channel!
Caffeeeeeine 😁😁👍🏼
Thank you, a littel bit confuse but help me so h
Masking can be a bit tricky but this guy really broke it down nicely. I also made a masking tutorial. Check it out and see if that works for you as well
Thank you!
god this is so fucking useful! Subscribed
Thank you great video. I do not understand why when I speed rump the piece of footage where the mask is applied the mask stop to fit the frame. Cheers, Gabriele
Hey thanks for the message, we’re going to create a new update video for this very soon!
First time saw how to do masking!
You're welcome! Hope you enjoyed it!
Thanks for the tip on masking...never knew FCPX could do this...being an "old school" AVID and CMX editor, this makes life a lot easier. I'll be looking for more of your posts to learn more about the possibilities. BRAVO my man!
1question...are there any tracking capabilities inherent in FCPX?
there isn't any tracking in FCPX but you can get object and motion auto track plug-ins from Pixel Film Studios for super cheap
Masking is an incredible tool. I'm glad I came across this video too. He inspired me to make a tutorial of my own. I'm still finding my voice but I think it came out ok
Great teacher man! Do you color grade before edits like this or after?
Thanks so much Andrew! So it’s best to grade first but just even out your footage, rather than trying to add colours etc. Did you see we also have some free LUTS on our channel?
Just starting with Final Cut Pro - what do you think is the best video(s) thanks
Hey Paul I hope you’re well good luck with FCPX I think you’ll enjoy it! We have a load of videos on our channel for Final cut
i love how he says to "chop" the clip
haha! now go chop that subscribe button ;-)
@@editorskeys just did!
Great explanation man! Just curious why you masked his book bag (drawing mask inside vs outside his bag) creating a weird cutout shape on the body? Wouldn’t it look smoother if you started drawing mask on outside contour of bag to transition to next clip? Maybe it’s an aesthetic choice or is that better starting point for smooth transition?
Hi, i see your point, we tried it both ways and for us it felt like this way looked the best in our opinion, however the other way as well looked completely smooth to, it was easy to show this way as an example as its more of a straight line to follow. I hope the video video helped you! Thank you.
How would you overlap two videos included the sound of both videos? Like for instance, in interviews, they always show the interviewer speaking and then transition to the host listening while the interviewer continues to speak. Could you make a video about that using final cut pro? Thank you for your time.
Hi, so your audio and video are on different tracks so you can do something called an L cut, hope this helps
Grt, thanks for sharing. I have face problems in exporting mp4 file before it use to take 1hrs for 1hrs file from project now it take more then 1hrs? what to do?
Hey I would try allocating more RAM in Premieres settings and clear premieres cache
When I speed up the clip being masked at the end, it seems to not make the mask work again, any suggestion as to what I could be doing wrong?
Did you happen to figure out why this happened / how to stop it happening? Im experiencing the same thing.
You probably have to go frame by frame when you speed ramp it. The timing is probably off. This guy is really good though I tried making a tutorial on the same thing and it was not easy. Hats off to him
@@RobertJohnsonEYT So speed ramp it first, then go frame by frame with this tool?
@@samueltredinnick yeah try that. Keyframe the mask manually to do exactly what you want it to do
I want to use masking for the first time. thank you
Thank you!
what is the shortcut for the speed ramp
Hey I’m so confused on how the fundamentals work for the shape mask in revealing the title why do you need 2 of the same clips and out the title in between them
Is it possible to save that mask effect or you need to do it everytime on new video?
It's best to change it each time as the shapes you are trying to mask will change.
