I'm curious about the exchange between the hopper and the cook chamber. There's a charcoal grate in the hopper and the lit coals will be on top of that grate. Is the port to the cook chamber even with the coal bed ? It appears to me that most of the firebox is below the cook chamber. I have a Masterbuilt 560 and the port to the cook chamber is right above the charcoal grate.

Sorry for delay. The opening to the cook chamber is even with the grate while the area below where you put the wood in for smoke is below it and pulls the smoke up.

Great smoker! Do you still have it? I am interested in getting one!

Yep! Black Betty enjoys impressing with every cook. Points of interest: chute on back, second wire port on opposite side of chute, 2 extra rails. WELL worth an investment. I also ordered a top of line cover from Covers and All.

What Charcoal have you found works best in it?

I use B&B briquettes and/or regular Kingsford. When I get the fire going in the chimney I prep the chute with a handful of lump before and after I pour in the chimney then use a larger chimney to load the rest.
