Couldn’t you add some wood chunks in with the charcoal in the chute? I would think having the wood chunks in the ash pan, they would smolder and not create a pleasant smoke.
I found that this gravity feed method also works with Kamado style smokers. If you use the kick ash basket you get small hot embers falling between the cracks and into the pull out ash tray underneath. Just put a chunk of smoking wood in the ash tray and you’ll get the perfect amount of smoke.
