Martin XB-51 Takes Flight...Again

- Vance Gilbert's incredible 37" span rubber-powered free-flight model of the Martin XB-51 is flown at Geneseo during two FAC contests in 2017 & 2023. First attempts in 2017 led to an unexpected inverted flight. The model's wing angle was revised for 2023, giving her a more stable flight pattern. Not shown, the removal of some tail weight, which allowed her to fly for 73 seconds on 2/3 power. The bird is destined to max at 2 minutes. Designed & flown by Vance Gilbert. Filmed by Tom Hallman & Charlie Sauter, with photos by Clive Gamble.

An amazing accomplishment. Never in a thousand years would I have seen that particular design having even half a chance of flying that nicely.

Ha! was about to comment how impressed i was he could get it to fly with anhedral ! - i built a folland gnat (with the same silver and orange livery :-) slope soarer with anhedral - and even with RC it was nearly un flyable! - though sweet how it went inverted for a stable landing 😇😍

Fabulous. This design is a challenge, but one to which Vance Gilbert has risen magnificently! I'm not surprised the anhedral had to go. As you guys seemed to be saying, even with the angle change, she was thinking of flipping! Really enjoyable, thanks Tom for showing us this. ⭐⭐👍

Anhedral to dihedral is a significant change. How did he do that? It certainly fixed it. That roll inverted was no bueno.
WOW! It looks like she is controllable at these scale air speeds that Look "to me" about 25% under design speed with almost zero power? Bet she is Way More Fun at scaled speeds or powers!
