why carbon does not gain or lose four electrons to complete its octate?
this is because if carbon looses 4 electrons forming C+4 cation then it would require a large amount of energy to remove four electrons from the outermost shell.
if carbon gains for electrons forming C-4 anion, it becomes difficult for the carbon anion with 6 protons holding on 10 electrons. so carbon does not gain or lose 4 electrons.
