Just a side note. If you are “back” lapping you should run the reel in reverse when you are putting the lapping compound on, otherwise you are at risk of dulling your blades.
That is a gorgeous lawnmower with a real nice cut. I imagine we don't use the round style blade for some safety reason, or perhaps it wouldnt handle twigs well lol. But for a manicured lawn, that cuts fantastic
Toro GTS 21” mowers especially from the 90’s to 2000 are some of the best mowers to finely cut the grass and leaves into fine particles so that ya don’t need to bag . I stopped bagging grass clippings over 25 years ago .
Wanted to thank you for your videos my dude! I got this old handmower and tried your sharpening and tightening tips. Worked like a charm! Special thanks to the way its supposed to sound, that really helped a lot!
Power reel mowers were popular in the late 50s but that horizontal shaft engine always really wanted to be on a minibike. The mowers would drive themselves into a stump or steel rod to self destruct freeing up the motor for its new life.
I found the best way of achieving a tight blade/bed knife tolerance is to let both corrode. This fills the gap completely, and then when you knock off the interference corrosion, its absolutely as tight a gap as can be accomplished. The raggedy edges act like a serrations and 'grip' the grass blades. I got the cleanest grass cuts and paper shear tests using plain ole' corrosion treatment. Sure, you might need to use lapping or files to get new pieces into agreement, but one you've done that, corrosion is the best fine adjustment method.
The local lawn mower shop back in the seventies had a home built reel mower sharpening stand that he disconnected the mowers chains and then connected his own chains to a drive motor to drive the reel while he's slathered on lapping compound and readjusted the blade
I need to get new magneto for my old school reel mower has not ran in a decade and need some work. I had it running last year but broke recoil then fixed it n thats when lost all spark so going to retrace the plug wire and c whats going on. I do lawn care so it would b pretty nice to use. Mine so old it has the old metal basket on front. Self propelled. Used to have s sickle more just like it but blue, not red like my reel mower
These mowers cut grass so much better than the spinning blade mowers. The problem is too many people are getting injured by these so they had to redesign the lawn mower
Golf course is probably cutting every day. 15 years experience cutting with reel mowers at golf courses. Also causes thatch when u dont catch clippings. Then you have to dethatch more often.
Make sure you are taking less then 1/3 of the blade off the grass. If you hoc is 3/4 inch for example you should only be taking 1/4th of an inch off this stops the grass from going into more stress then needed.
What’s that powder stuff and can I just repeat, put it on a paint brush and slap it on my green works while off? Where do I buy it? So many questions lol
Welll that’s just back lapping the blade u can buy a grinder wheel that will sharpen the blade and give it a new edge back lapping is just for keeping it extra sharp
My father used to be a master sharpener. He had a machine that would sharpen the blades on one of those wheel mowers. Only one around that could sharpen them. He has retired and unfortunately doesn't sharpen those anymore.
Sits nicer in the bin for a good reason. Ever slid a knife blade over a ribbon to curl it up? Same thing happens when you pull and rip the grass with your mower.
I have an almost identical reel mower to this one I haven't had it running in so many years but this makes me want to get it running again I just need to find a grass catcher like that
@@noobiestclips it's not a wast of time, depending on the grass you have most will get "matted" and slow or even stop the growth in spots Amongst plenty of other benefits.
I love these original engines but i have new honda engines in all my reel mowers. They etart first pull and without much effort to crank over the case like a big old tecumseh engine
Wait, your mower cuts forward. The push powered cheapo version I have spins the blades and also cuts backward. I didnt assemble mine. My father in law did. Did he assemble it backward, or are these old fashioned style mowers not always done the same way?
Never seen this type in my life of course im a newer generation but i have a question that needs an answer. How do u cut the corners where ur fences connect?
You run the blade in reverse with grinding paste on the reel and bed knife. The friction of the griding paste between the reel and bed knife removes any imperfections and sharpens the reel.
reel mowers work better in bermuda grass. St Agustin grass will pull and will get stuck on the blades....I had to kill all St Agustine and grow bermuda and now it looks badass
Spent the last 30 minutes watching a random guy on the internet fix his lawn over the last couple months. It was fascinating. Highly recommend. 10/10
Just a side note. If you are “back” lapping you should run the reel in reverse when you are putting the lapping compound on, otherwise you are at risk of dulling your blades.
Ayyyeeee! Good eye.
I am a professional landscaper and this series has been very enjoyable to watch. Congrats on your lawn!
A sharper blade obviously cuts better but a dull blade cut slows down the growth for some reason. At least it does when you're bushhogging
Kinda like how a cut from a sharp knife heals faster than a cut from a dull knife
In the 60s and 70s we had a King O Lawn reel mower like that it was self-propelled and I loved it.
That is a gorgeous lawnmower with a real nice cut. I imagine we don't use the round style blade for some safety reason, or perhaps it wouldnt handle twigs well lol. But for a manicured lawn, that cuts fantastic
I’ve heard some golf courses have this concept in big finish mowers
im happy u went back and explained this

Bro… as a kid we played with the non moterized version of that, and if that thing had been better at cutting. My finger would not be with me today😅

That liquid sand paper is interesting stuff
Grit compound
Possibly a lapping compound

As a kid, I remember mowing my grandparent's front yard with a manual (non-motor) reel mower!
Dude that thing is a work of art
Man watching those grass fly through the bin was satisfying now i wonder why it was ever portrayed as a boring chore in multimedias

My backyard is hard dirt. Looks good in the winter after i unclog the carburetor on my mower. Your lawn looks good though.
In our Area Golf Grass is always mulched, tho its cut maybe 2 times a week keeping it short. The mulched Grass fills and nourishes the Grass over time

You look original 1963.. yard, mower, outfit, home and haircut.
My goal this year is to level out my lawn so i can use my manual push reel mower.
Use a playing card to check the sharpness it’s way easier to tell than a piece of paper
Great idea.
What’s that powder stuff and can I just repeat, put it on a paint brush and slap it on my green works while off? Where do I buy it? So many questions lol
The last 20 seconds sound like a forged in fire judging sequence.
DAMN that lawns coming a long! Looks great man

Wow..
What's the best thing to do with grass trimmings when full? Let them dry out and use them as fertilizer?
I can smell this video.
Sits nicer in the bin for a good reason. Ever slid a knife blade over a ribbon to curl it up? Same thing happens when you pull and rip the grass with your mower.
Looks great🙌🏾
At 5 y/o I attempted to help dad and this same lawn mower dragged me straight into the street 😂
I have an almost identical reel mower to this one I haven't had it running in so many years but this makes me want to get it running again I just need to find a grass catcher like that
Why would you need yo bag your lawn, it is just a waste of time and removes biomatter from the cycle
@@noobiestclips it's not a wast of time, depending on the grass you have most will get "matted" and slow or even stop the growth in spots Amongst plenty of other benefits.
You sound like a relative of Gru. Love it.
Reel mowers are the best!
Truly, they don’t make them like they used to
Very cool machine
Those are great mowers. Why dosen't thay sell them anymore?
They are available, but fussy in comparison. Many people prefer to 'stress cut' their lawn to keep from having to cut very often.
Bro got the triangle cut 😂
American lawns are beautiful ngl
Where is an entire community to support a lawnmower? This is crazy.
I love these original engines but i have new honda engines in all my reel mowers. They etart first pull and without much effort to crank over the case like a big old tecumseh engine

Didn’t know vegeta knew so much about mowers
Looking good man
This dude really does not want to go back in the house.
What kind of lawnmower is that? Where can I get one? It looks awesome.
"King O' Lawn reel mower", there's a comment up further that says it, credit to him
Never seen this type in my life of course im a newer generation but i have a question that needs an answer. How do u cut the corners where ur fences connect?
Plant native to help insects birds and other wildlife
Where do you get one of those kind of mowers? I would love to have one
How often does he have to sharpen it? With a traditional mower i find that they neve hold an edge for long.
I need to get one of these mowers. Here’s a plot twist. I live in Finland.
Where do you get those Danger mowers with the exposed motorized blades?
Can you send a link where i can buy the mower?
Can you explain how putting some gritty putty on the blades sharpens it? What am I missing here? What does the blade rub against to get sharp?
You run the blade in reverse with grinding paste on the reel and bed knife. The friction of the griding paste between the reel and bed knife removes any imperfections and sharpens the reel.
I can watch but don’t wanna love lawn mowing.
Do you know if you can get those results using conventional mowers? Roding or gas push?
Bro has a steampunk mower
What do you do with the grass cuttings?
what year is that thing?
I've hauled thousands of golf and turf machines and never seen anything that old
Forbaden Yerba

Damnit I'm in my mid twenties and will never own a house, how did I end up here.
Can you use this on regular blades?
i need an electric reel mower
The is the correct name for this type of blade system?
My allergies are so pissed off
“Overall, it will cut!”
Not a dis - you sound like a relative of Gru
What sort of grass is that? It looks more like chives.
What mower is this I want one
Overall, this blade will keel
Wait no wrong show
What type of mower is this
You need a better reel mower
First video dry grass, second wet.
How much for one of them mowers
Off topic, what pants are those?
I sure hope its real, itd be wild mowing your lawn with a fake one
Didn't know I cared about this
I STILL DONT! 😂
Why I imagine matcha
Your blade will keil ha
That’s honing not sharpening
It will keel
Lawn mowers are $120 bucks bro
Mow it and they will watch
Forbiden chive
Video you can smell:
Yikes.
Lawns like that are ridiculous abominations xox
Put ur fingers in it
And that’s how you make 2 videos out from 1.
