    Picked up a Yoga 370, the model before this with a faulty keyboard for next to nothing. Absolutely brilliant machine. Been a Thinkpad user for a long time, started with a T420 and have owned multiple more. Still have my 420. This is probably my favorite one right next to the 420. Other than the faulty keyboard destroyed by the previous owner this machine looks and feels like new after 7 years of daily use. Just cleaned the heatsink and put new thermal paste on it and replaced the keybord, fresh Windows install and she is good as new. Even the battery still holds for hours. The screen is gorgeous and the pen is super nice to use. Whole machine is just superb to work on. Highly recommend picking one up.

      The 370 Yoga has upgradable RAM (up to 32GB) on the non-4G modem models. I bought the fastest available CPU variant (i7 7600) from eBay in mint condition for $100 and upgraded it with a 1TB NVME SSD, 32GM RAM and an Intel AX210 WiFi 6e card.

    I adore the smaller size of X380 yoga (which I remember is not much bigger than 260 yoga), but X1 yoga's 2560x1440 really provides lots of screen estates for multitasking (I use them at 96 dpi), so I have a pair of X1 Yoga now :).
    WWAN slots on these Kabylake machines actually only provide 1 lane of PCIe channels, so it's much slower than the main 2280 port. My pair of X1Y3s is running with a 2280 512G main SSD, 2242 512G SSD on WWAN for pagefiles and virtual machines, and a 1T microSD for my books and Wikipedia mirrors. The largest SSD that fits in WWAN slot is WD SN520 2242 512G, not because of the PCIe restrction, but because of M.2 slot keying. Newer 2242s using M-keying, which can never fit into that slot.
    Kabylake-R (i5/7 8th gen on these machines) is super hot, but with ThrottleStop doing undervolting and TDP controlling (25 W seems like a sweet spot), better with Honeywell PTM7950 thermal pad and TPfancontrol, you can squeeze some performance out of these small machines. Only Icelakes and later can truly beat it in Cinebench R15 with the same thread count, product line (U-class SKUs) and chassis size. These CPUs are really heat dissipate restricted, you can even try 45 W TDP and be surprised.
    Abandoning lift-and-lock keyboards for presumably weight and thickness saving on later Thinkpad Yoga models is really one of the reasons that I may stay on X1Y3 in the foreseeable future (the other reason is X1Y3 and alike is the last platform on which Windows 10 1607 could run without too much hiccup). The only thing different on new Thinkpad Yogas than products from other vendors is the Track Point, and really the Track Point on X1Y3 is with a somewhat worse handle feeling than X1Y1 and before.
    I do miss the huge rectangle power port. :)

    My employer is getting rid of a bunch of laptops including these. I'm on the waiting list to purchase one for the equivalent of $55. Slap Linux on it and I can hand off my current laptop (Ideapad Flex 5, with similar specs) to my wife! For the both of us laptops are not a necessity. My wife barely uses a laptop outside of work (for which she has her work laptop) and I casually use a laptop for watching shows and occasionally for productivity. But I also have a PC and a Steam Deck I can use. And we have an iPad, but for media viewing I would like something that uses their screen a little more efficient.
    $55 for a 2 in 1? That's no more dualbooting for a serious bargain.

    The yoga L380 is actually a nice substitute to the x380. It is cheaper, not as good quality, not TB3, no WWAN, but the same screen as the x380. However it is more upgradability as it has 2 ram slots so it can actually support 64gb of ram !

    These are a nice piece of kit. I've been running a 370 Yoga (so prior model, but pretty much the same chassis as this) as my travel machine since late 2017. It's /just/ starting to feel its age a little bit now, but works fine for the light internet/word/movies/light image editing I use it for. Of course it doesn't hurt that the 370 still had socketed RAM, so when I upgraded my home machine I was able to throw one of the old 16GB sticks into the Yoga and give it a cheap boost.
    And yes, that base is a bit of a faff to get off. I think I've broken at least one clip.

      If official Windows 11 support matters to you then the 8th gen is the way to go.

    • @81Alfetta
      @81Alfetta Před rokem +1

      @@VV-wl8gb the 7th gen does fine with basic office tasks, and I can still do light photoshop work and run my project planning software on it… though it’s not my primary for any of that, and noticeably slower than something with more grunt (not frustratingly slow, but you just note it took a bit longer). Bear on mind too I’m currently running 16Gb of RAM in mine (temporarily 32Gb, long story), and have so far avoided versions of Office and Adobe that require a subscription, so take that as you will. My work issued laptop also still has 7th gen/8Gb of ram, and bogs down pretty badly with all the extra stuff work puts on it or when opening large spreadsheets, big drawing packs, etc. Part of me would be tempted to go for 8th gen, as I remember it being quite a substantial jump forward at the time, but it depends on what your using it for.

    • @alee14389
      @alee14389 Před 8 měsíci +2

      My 370 is totally pimped out. Win 11 installed without any issues and runs perfectly. All updates work fine. I put in 16gb of ram and a very fast Adata SX8200 512gb SSD. And last month I finally got around to putting in an AX210 card for wifi6e. The bottleneck will always be the two-core CPU, but I haven't noticed any difference versus my X380 when using it for work. Gaming is a tiny bit slower on the 370 though. But I love my 370 so much because you simply cannot find it's combination of features anymore like retractable keyboard, swappable ram, and perfectly sized category 13-14 inch laptops. My daily carry is my 370 and 2022 Zephyrus G14 for gaming.

    I bought a refurbished one (8th Gen I7; 16gb) for my life. It cost me 380 euros with 2y warranty. I was looking for this version because of the better screen with 98% RGB and 2000:1 contrast. Recommending finding this version just for the amazing screen.
    Battery with 13% degradation is good for 5-7 hours screen on time.
    The processor is downvolting realy nice and its benefiting for more battery life and performance! With no problem you can get -200mv off the chip.
    Since it has a Windows Pro license I recommending un update to 11 for better battery life.
    I'm glad choosing this model over Hp Elitebook 1030 G2 for benefiting of nice screen much more performance and integrated Wacom pen. Missing the bare aluminium chassis though ...
    P.S. It is easier to open the back cover starting from the front size and unclipping to back.

      my L13 yoga i believe is the gen 3 with amd ryzen pro 7 . i hope lenovo does listen to complaints. because this is a hardware issue and not software. lenovo is the only laptop company that still seems to keep the buttons for the touchpad and keep the trackpad. so i do hope they improve quality.
      this is gen 1 czcams.com/video/s8xS1GzTcfY/video.html . it has three screws on the screen. the L13 gen 3 only has 2, the plastic that holds the screw is actually broken on mine. tried searching for replacement online and only found gen 2 gen 1 screen. so im left with one option, super glue. which did work. but i am not comfortable with this solution, so now i no longer fully 360 turn the hinge. i just use it like a regular laptop.

      I'm not an engineer but I'd research the system requirements of the most demanding software you plan to run, then talk to other people that have done or are doing the work you are about to do they can tell you the reality. I know workstation grade units like the P-series are often popular choices since they have dedicated GPUs.

    I love these Thinkpad Yoga laptops. As the RAM is soldered to the motherboard, you can get stuck with 4 GB of RAM with older models but they could still be useful.
    Actually, I have a Thinkpad Yoga 12 Gen 2 mounted on the Kitchen wall so I can watch CZcams videos while making pancakes :) It's still better than Android tablets...

    • @LaptopRetrospective
      @LaptopRetrospective  Před rokem +1

      @@LaptopRetrospective Yep :)
      mounting 14" models is even better because of the bigger screen plus some of those actually have a RAM slot (at least the Yoga 14 does) so you can still have 8GB of RAM.

    Hey I recently did a BIOS update on my T14 Gen 1 from version 1.41 to 1.42. But now my laptop sometimes refuses to turn on while the power light and the logo LED remain on. Also the time is always out of sync. I have replaced the CMOS battery but no difference. I tried downgrading the BIOS back to 1.41 but the self-healing process will automatically update to 1.42. I don't know what I should do.

      I read about people who faced similar issues on Reddit (and also Lenovo Forum) and some of them were able to solve it by downgrading the BIOS to the earlier version. But I haven't been able to do it due to the self-healing that auto updates the BIOS. Is there any way I can disable it and permanently downgrade the BIOS?

      I give price ranges at the end of the video. 8th gen will run Windows 11 and if you look at how long people hold onto a ThinkPad on the used market, it's usually a significant amount of time. It's not always about comparable but usable vs cost of new/cutting edge vs needs of the user.
