    I know I'm late to the party, but I'm 1/2 way through making this quilt for my son, just the border, backing, and quilting to be done. I'm in love with the fabric. I've changed it up a little bit, it's all in indigos, machine quilted 1/4" down the seams, backed with minky, and then I'll hand quilt the rest of it. Thank you for sharing it!

    I am just made a 60 x 60 flannel quilt top with one piece flannel backing and had a devil of a time. I had considered using batting but it was out of the question. Then when you get it sewn together you still have to bind it and I used cotton thinking it would be easier but it wasn’t- I increased my binding to 3.5 to allow for the extra thickness too.

    Laura, I watched this video even though it was made 6 years ago. You always give such good instructions in your videos and I love to see your videos. In this one, you said you should always wash the flannel before you begin cutting and stitching. I have been wondering for quite a while now and this seem to be the appropriate place and person to ask: I have several layer cakes and jelly rolls of flannel fabric but I hesitate to do anything with them. What do you suggest? I think you are probably the best person to ask this of and I respect your reply. Thank you for any help you can give me.

    Everyone has different opinions about washing fabrics. One mentor told me, wash it like you are going to use it. So I would have used my regular cycle and not gentle, as Laura suggested. However, I would have had a lot more strings. Also, be careful with plaids. Laura's design was woven but sometimes it is printed on and not always printed on the straight of grain. So be careful when blocking and pressing. With love from Arizona.

      Also, if you are going to hand quilt, test different battings according to how hot your son gets as flannel is warm on its own. As Laura says in the video, one option is to not use any batting, just the pieced top and a back. The thicker the batting the harder it is to make tiny stitches. One blogger says wool batting is the easiest to hand quilt, but in my opinion it's also the warmest and most expensive . xoxo from Arizona.

    By the look of things, I think the initial smoothing should be done one layer at a time. Unfortunately the under layer wasn’t straight, you can see this in some of those grey check pieces, they’re off. No criticism, I’ve been struggling with this myself! My material is absolutely like tripe! It won’t stay still.

    Hi Laura, great video as always. I’m a fairly new quilter so please pardon my simple questions here. Do you prewash your fabrics in cold water? What temp in the dryer? And, do you have a specific detergent you like to use for your fabrics?

    • @SewVeryEasy
      @SewVeryEasy  Před 6 lety +2

      I do use cold water as that is how I would wash it after it was made. I use medium dryer and only dry each piece for 7 min. and then do as I did with this flannel. I do like something like Woolite

    Thanks a lot Laura! 😎🌸 I’m making a throw flannel on top and fleeçe on back. It’s the first time I sew something that big with flannel so I used Best Press but after the cutting. I have noticed that you starch before the cut. I think I will try this next time because I find it is quite a challenge to to work with a 68 »x58 » piece of flannel. I have made throws last year with fleece and Minky Sherpa and it was easier, I must admit. Is it just me?
    What do you think? Thanks. 😎🌸

    • @SewVeryEasy
      @SewVeryEasy  Před 6 lety +2

      Flannel has a lot of give to it. If you starch it first, before cutting it will help stabilize the fabric. You can always double starch it :) if need be. After you press and cut it, try to press it as little as possible. The heat of the Iron will make it soft again. You can finger press it as you go along. The starch will come out in the wash. Fleece and Minky are thicker and do not give as much well sewing. While sewing with flannel is a walking foot is helpful

    Brilliant quilt Laura, would a walking foot be good for stitching this quilt to help stop it stretching? Thank you as always, Shirley.

    • @newbeequilter
      @newbeequilter Před 6 lety +1

      + Shirley Atterbury - Do as Laura instructed and pre-wash the flannel (as it shrinks more than regular quilting cotton fabric) and spray starch and iron it in the manner she recommended. Both will help; but using a walking foot for straight line quilting should do the trick; just practice on some scrap fabric first - she even says to do that for the piecing. But I do think any stitching on flannel is more tricky than regular cotton quilting fabric. I don't know, maybe she's skilled enough to do free-motion quilting too - I think her Bernina has more than a few specialty feet. A newer, more technologically advanced and quality machine seems to allow one to sew cleaner, consistent stitches.

    • @SewVeryEasy

      A walking foot would be fine to use:)

    Thank you for all the tips you give out with every video. I need them all!! I am trying to put my flannel backing together using a walking foot but the fabric at the top is not keeping in pace with the bottom. at the end I had an extra inch on the top and I don't understand why it's not feeding evenly. I prewashed the fabric, pressed, starched it and I pinned it. I just ripped it and am afraid to do it again. I didn't had that problem before but it seems that the bigger its getting the harder time my machine is having. I had it in my lap and on the side table trying for it not to be pulling.
    What can I be doing wrong. Any suggestions?

    • @SewVeryEasy
      @SewVeryEasy  Před 5 lety +1

      You might need to pin baste more. Also see if starting from the center going out helps. As you quilt hold the front of the quilt up slightly as you were quilting so that it's almost sliding under the needle versus pulling under the needle. I hope that makes sense
