Heroes in History: Zhan Hu

  • At long last, I finally get to talk about Zhan Hu, one of my favorites of the Wu Lin. From their design, to their weapon, to their fiery abilities, the Zhan Hu excited me from the moment I started playing them. But what excited me more was learning about who they were based on.
    After careful study and analysis of the evidence, I've concluded that Zhan Hu is more likely based on the Jinyiwei of Ming China, the secret police and elite guard of the Ming Dynasty. I hope ya'll enjoy this video. It was fun to put together and it has some really cool history involved.

    I'm very happy with the Zhan Hu as characters, it has historical elements but is still very creative and fits into the world of FH. Having a Chinese faction without fireworks/gunpower would be disappointing. Its the same reason why not getting the hand cannon execution was disappointing. China invented gunpowder and it is cool to see that represented. I could do without the magic rocks though, but that's an entirely different discussion.

      @@gammothguy297 It does, although she should have been put in the Wu Lin faction honestly, they should have saved a more exotic hero for the first of the Outlanders.

      @@thewolfgirlexpert I guess, but I think the point was she isn’t affiliated with the Wu Lin, like the other Wu Lin heroes. She’s completely independent, owing allegiance to no one. I.e., the whole point of the Outlanders.

      The Chinese might have discovered gunpowder and used them for fireworks/artillery, but the Europeans took that idea and ran with it. If anything, a knight should've had the first handcannon/flintlock.

A Knight or a Wu Lin were the only options possible historically yeah, however, had Ubi released another Knight hero the community (including myself) would have become rabid. But in the end the Wu Lin didn't even get a new hero anyways, It has been nearly 2 whole years since we got a Viking or a Wu Lin.

      Your comment really surprised me because I actually once tried to make a Shen based Zhanhu by using the red and white color from the christmas event and some battlepass patterns that made red feathers appear on his armor! He really remind me of Shen due to how fluid he is (at least since his rework lmao) and his clothing that flows really well with his animation. Not only that but Shen using canons in the film and Zhanhu essentially being an artillery specialist just gives even more credit to this comparaison, brilliant!

    I am very happy CZcams recommended this video to me, I’m a Wu Lin fanboy and zhanhu is my main. I always thought they had a cool backstory and lore, and zhanhu’s was the coolest to me because he’s like Count Dooku, elegant and dignified yet villainous and power hungry

    I've used the nodachi and the changdao for real in my martial arts training and tbh, I prefer the changdao more due to the balance and perfect mix between a longsword and spear like attributes. Most historical changdao have a straight backed, one or even two sided blade that actually lets it stab and pierce better than the curved katana imo.
    I was main Zhanhu for a long time and just now switched to Gladiator but I will forever enjoy the fire artillery warrior and the powerful yet elegant changdao

    I love Zhan hu. Their design, fighting them, definitely playing them, the in game lore. And now this as well. LB will forever be my favorite child, so for further tempting me away from him thank you and curse you.

      @@josiahhayes3423 they are one of the only heroes who can engage in dodge heavy fights while not just negating any and all risk and every dangerous move they have can get thrown back with either a gb or light parry punish. He can be played annoying when it's just nothing but light, ub light, and dodge light and nothing else but literally every hero has a "that play style" so I don't judge by the lowest common denominator.

    Even though for honor is basically historical fantasy at the same time it is cool how a lot of it is based on something you can find in real life.

      That's entirely the point of medieval fantasy: Fictional elements, but with various connections to real life be it mythological, cultural, or military. For example, in the Elder Scrolls series, notice that a lot of the inspiration for High Rock comes from popular depictions of Western Europe during the Middle Ages, or how the Cyrodilic Empire is almost directly based on the Western Roman Empire complete with a similar military system, architectural style, and other things to the Western Roman Empire.

    tbh the word changdao just means a long sword… that word could be any sword or even Chinese pole arms, the sword he is using are controversial. but the mocap actor of zhanhu is a person who practice a single edge double handed sword called miaodao. just consider it is a Japanese tachi, it is a tape of sword that been created at the qing dynasty, the last dynasty of China. it is highly based on Japanese swords, even some techniques are similar. miaodao is if not the last existing double handed Chinese swords that people train with. but zhanhu's sword in game model are definitely not miaodao.

    Tho I doubt they used such a long sword esp when the Jinyiwei are supposed to be imperial guards or assassins as they need to carry main one hand swords. Three movies that portrays the jinyiwei and such is pretty good :) 14 blades starring Donnie Yen, Brotherhood of blades 1 and 2

      To my basic understanding tiandi is based off of a Chinese peasant soldier, his weapon the dadao was a sword that was used to arm most of the soldiers conscripted into the Chinese army, but I would I would love a video on tiandi too

    I think the Dai Li of Avatar are based off Dai Li of KMT, a spy served for the ROC and known as Himmler of China. Their uniforms are also directly from the Qing Dynasty without a doubt and I don't think the people working on Avatar really know who Jinyiwei were. Zhanhu is definitely based off Jinyiwei for sure, but the lore also mixed with the Shenjiying, which is the artillery camp of the Ming who specialised in gunpowder equipment like imported guns, fire lances, cannons and many others including grenades.

    I haven't watched the entire video yet but i feel like i have to point out that the name of the character is pronounced more like "john hu" (except the o is pronounced like uh so technically "j-uh-n hu) and not "zan hu". It's really diffcult to explain since i am not an english speaker and i have a bit of trouble explaining how to pronounce something to english speakers so i hope you understood what i was trying to say

    What's funny to me is I thought Ubi would use a Miao Dao because of it's similar look to the sword those secret police used but it's more like a Bastard sword being anywhere from hand and a half to two handed but being closer to wardens sword then a greatsword that the Chang Dao is. Plus it has that fancy scabbard and I thought Zhanhu would be the first hero with a Scabbard.

      To be honest, I kind of ran with that concept a tiny bit. In my eyes, an Assassin's Creed taking place in China would best be set in the Ming Dynasty because so much political, economic, and other shit was going on at the time, and was also the era in which the Shaolin monks started developing their martial arts skills at a rapid pace. For a Japan based AC title, either the mid 13th century, or the final years of the Tokugawa Shogunate, specifically 1864, would be best with the latter allowing the potential for a Japan branch of the Assassins to have Shinobi act as their primary intelligence gatherers before the Assassins move in for the kill once enough knowledge on their target has been gathered. A Japan based Assassin's Creed title set in 1864 also has the potential for some Japanese Assassins to be secret Hitokiri working for the Western backed Imperialist military against the Tokugawa government, but were never caught unlike the real Hitokiri during that time. Meanwhile, with a Japan based Assassin's Creed title set in 1864, perhaps the Templars in the Tokugawa government hire groups of Ronin and send them out to act as bandits harassing pro-Imperialist villages similar to how highwaymen were used in Europe with the feudal system during the Middle Ages. Perhaps the Hidden Blade in Japan is more like a Tanto dagger than it is a proper Hidden Blade, which can also be used by Japanese Assassins to commit Seppuku in the event that they're either captured or feel immeasurable shame.

    In the Tang Dynasty there was no changdao a two handed "sword" was name Mo dao no examples have been found but from what we do know it was a pole weapon which despite the name dao it had a straight double edged blade, the sword in the Ming Dynasty came from nodachi like you said I would add it becomes even more obvious with the original name wodao( literally meaning Japanese sword),chang dao or miao dao the typical names today were given during the Republican era.
    While we're on the topic of weapons I have been meaning to discuss something, I know you have mentioned before that the guandao is the origin of the naginata however this is unlikely besides both being pole weapons with single edge blades they don't have that much in common when looking at the details and both their history, in fact the naginata may be the older of the two.
    guandao was a Cavalry weapon unfit for foot combat or common soldiers and it's use as a actual weapon is limited pretty much use for strength training after song, the naginata history however is the complete opposite with no evidence for use on Horseback until about the 14th century.
    Also in the ming dynasty we see the adoption of Japanese naginata sometimes called Chang Wo Dao, at the same time during sengoku peirod We do see at least some examples of blades resembling ming guandao.

      Well I got my information from "Chinese Martial Arts: From Antiquity to the Twenty-First Century" by Peter Lorge. But I admit, that is only one source. Do you have another I could look at?
      And yes, I did get my information on the guandao and naginata history from a source that I later found to be unreliable, but I have not gone back to retract my statement.
      And as for the Chang Wo Dao, I'd also like to see a source on that, as I've never heard of this. Could you link them to me? I'm interested to learn more.

      Talks about mo dao and Chang Wo Dao tho not too deep in detail,and Chang Wo Dao I'm afraid I have not cross everything that talks about a too much I could try though.

      Here it mostly talks about the miao dao but does talk about Chang Wo Dao a bit.
