    I think the story of Bellerophon is a metaphor for a man's growth:
    he starts as a brash, irresponsible youth, who commits murder. He is then sent to repent in the temple of Athena (goddess of intellect), where he finds the means to tame his instincts (represented by Pegasus) that become the weapon to fight off evil and chaos (the chimera) and prove himself a man, while rejecting his lower impulses (the rebellious tribes of amazons) which ultimately gets him the girl, the ultimate prize for his growth (as he can now produce an offspring). Unfortunately he fails the last trial, being unable to accept his fate he challenges the gods and loses, as he had lost sight of his purpose in life and wanted too much.
    But perhaps I'm just overanalyzing.

    • @vladvoinea7759
      @vladvoinea7759 Před 5 lety +23

      That could very well be the true meaning behind it, after all this are all metaphors and riddles to be solved.

    Perseus used to be my favorite hero, & is still a very close second due to the fact that he is one of the few Greek heroes that didn’t really have a flaw & was just a good guy. A role model if you will. But when I heard Bellerophon’s tale, I fell in love, I don’t know why in particular. I feel it’s a mix of the fact that he’s lesser known, & he’s actually pretty competent, sure he has Pegasus, but that’s it, he didn’t have the buttload of special equipment Perseus had nor the supernatural strength that Heracles had, & he wasn’t a jerk like Jason or Theseus. He killed the chimaera with his whit, & took on armies & pirates singlehanded. And his hubris is very human & understandable in my opinion. He lived an exciting life & overcame everything thrown at him, & like he said, I like the moral of pushing yourself, & not too fond of knowing your place, though I understand the lesson of valuing yourself too much could be a problem. Again, very interesting to me.
    I choose to believe the more tragic ending where he survived & was overshadowed by other heroes, it just fits with the tragedy of valuing yourself only to be overshadowed. But Bellerophon will always have a fan in me.

    • @fernandomaron87
      @fernandomaron87 Před 2 lety

      Why do you think that Jason and Theseus are jerks? I'd say they were cocky, but jerks? If anybody in the ancient mythology could be called a jerk, that man was Achilles, he was a total rock star with a prima donna behaviour.

    • @azidahaka8543
      @azidahaka8543 Před rokem

      @@fernandomaron87 Jason commited Adultery, despite his marriage to Medea done by Hera herself. he also risked Medea's life for his own selfish gains several times.
      Theseus abandoned Ariadne, the girl who gave up her home,parents, luxury & royalty for him on a remote island. Theseus also kidnapped Helen who was just a child at that time, he also killed his son based on false accusations.
      Achilles actually wasn't a jerk, he was actually a pretty good person. until his loved ones i.e Briseas and Patroculus were taken away from him. He commited manslaughter in troy to avenge Patroculus. But other than he wasn't a jerk who betrayed his own friends for selfish gains. Theseus and Jason were like brave soldiers later turned into corrupt politicians. Heroes like Perseus, Heracles and Achilles were true Heroes who had a good moral character.
      Bellerophon was also a good guy but he just became blinded by his success & fell to hubris.

    This video is well appreciated. This past weekend my son and I started watching a series on Greek Mythology, we both love the stories. My grandson did not get interested until Bellerophon. We explained that most of the problems experienced by Greek heroes was their hubris, or arrogant pride, after winning a battle or two. He has a problem like this and the story was like a godsend for his parents who have tried to tame his natural tendency to crow and gloat. He watched the other tales (except Oedipus, we didn't feel that tale was appropriate at his age) so that he could see, great men accomplished great things, but then felt they were deserving of something more, entitled to more. It ended in misery for most. The lesson being, the higher you climb, the further your fall unless you are very careful and keep the memory from whence you came. He's having fun with the stories in your book. When he gets a little older I will introduce him to Edith Hamilton and Bulfinch.

    In big fantasy film adaptations like Clash of the Titans, I noticed they will often combine story elements of Bellerophon/Theseus/Perseus & usually just go with Perseus as The Hero.
    This myth has similar themes to Icarus flying too close to the sun. Hubris. Still a common theme in modern scifi/horror - don't play god or there's horrible consequences.
    I noticed in many of the artistic depictions he was shown as being left handed. Is there any significance to this or just a coincidence?
    Great video as always ♡

    I've always thought that the reason Zues denied Bellerophon's entry but allowed the Pegasus was because, without Pegasus, Bellerophon wouldn't have had succeeded for so long. He welcomed the Pegasus because it was the real hero of the two, while Bellerophon considered all of his accomplishments made by his hands alone.
    Moral: No "I" in team.

    Hey dude, I just want to ask you this important question. So, I don't believe in Myths, but the more I hear it the more I'm starting to feel interested in it. So, how would you define Mythology? Is Mythology historical? What does it teach? And what are some good books to start Mythology? Please respond, thanks.

    • @basedbacchus7224
      @basedbacchus7224 Před 5 lety

      SWLoreNerd55 well to answer, mythology is just a story- not necessarily always historical but it is a story, for example even the Christians have a mythology which could be interpreted as the Bible, or the leviathan. It can however be historical, but it doesn’t always mean it’s fully accurate. To answer the final question: there isn’t any really good place to begin as all mythology is different, and even the same stories have different bits and pieces so you can really start anywhere. A good base to start would be Greek mythology first. Oh and what does it teach?: it teaches generally wisdom or metaphorical answers so metaphorical questions.

    This isn't for Bellerophon but rather for HMS Bellerophon (1786 version), better known in the Royal Navy as Billy Ruffian. She took part in many of the Great battles of the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic wars. Most famously perhaps the battle of Trafalgar where she fought a bitter and bloody contest against no few than four French ships of the line. Chalked on her cannons the immortal words Death or Victory of which it would turn out she would have both. Losing her Captain, many of her crew, her colours three times and capturing a French prize ship. However, more than anything she was a symbol of the Royal Navy at its finest. She would later have the honour of taking Napoleon to St Helena but also the ignominy of being made into a prison ship before finally being sold for scrap. And, in that, perhaps she ended up sharing the fate of Bellerophon Himself.
