#GreekMythology #Mythology #Bellerophon - Zábava
I think the story of Bellerophon is a metaphor for a man's growth:
he starts as a brash, irresponsible youth, who commits murder. He is then sent to repent in the temple of Athena (goddess of intellect), where he finds the means to tame his instincts (represented by Pegasus) that become the weapon to fight off evil and chaos (the chimera) and prove himself a man, while rejecting his lower impulses (the rebellious tribes of amazons) which ultimately gets him the girl, the ultimate prize for his growth (as he can now produce an offspring). Unfortunately he fails the last trial, being unable to accept his fate he challenges the gods and loses, as he had lost sight of his purpose in life and wanted too much.
But perhaps I'm just overanalyzing.
That could very well be the true meaning behind it, after all this are all metaphors and riddles to be solved.
No, it's perfect.
It surely makes a lot of sense. We shall never know for sure, but I know a good paraphrase when I read one.
Yeah it's great but lets be honest the Greek gods are worst than trash. Belleraphon was greater in character than the gods, even with his hubris.
Nope, I think you nailed it well.
Perseus used to be my favorite hero, & is still a very close second due to the fact that he is one of the few Greek heroes that didn’t really have a flaw & was just a good guy. A role model if you will. But when I heard Bellerophon’s tale, I fell in love, I don’t know why in particular. I feel it’s a mix of the fact that he’s lesser known, & he’s actually pretty competent, sure he has Pegasus, but that’s it, he didn’t have the buttload of special equipment Perseus had nor the supernatural strength that Heracles had, & he wasn’t a jerk like Jason or Theseus. He killed the chimaera with his whit, & took on armies & pirates singlehanded. And his hubris is very human & understandable in my opinion. He lived an exciting life & overcame everything thrown at him, & like he said, I like the moral of pushing yourself, & not too fond of knowing your place, though I understand the lesson of valuing yourself too much could be a problem. Again, very interesting to me.
I choose to believe the more tragic ending where he survived & was overshadowed by other heroes, it just fits with the tragedy of valuing yourself only to be overshadowed. But Bellerophon will always have a fan in me.
Why do you think that Jason and Theseus are jerks? I'd say they were cocky, but jerks? If anybody in the ancient mythology could be called a jerk, that man was Achilles, he was a total rock star with a prima donna behaviour.
@@fernandomaron87 Jason commited Adultery, despite his marriage to Medea done by Hera herself. he also risked Medea's life for his own selfish gains several times.
Theseus abandoned Ariadne, the girl who gave up her home, parents, luxury & royalty for him on a remote island. Theseus also kidnapped Helen who was just a child at that time, he also killed his son based on false accusations.
Achilles actually wasn't a jerk, he was actually a pretty good person. until his loved ones i.e Briseas and Patroculus were taken away from him. He commited manslaughter in troy to avenge Patroculus. But other than he wasn't a jerk who betrayed his own friends for selfish gains. Theseus and Jason were like brave soldiers later turned into corrupt politicians. Heroes like Perseus, Heracles and Achilles were true Heroes who had a good moral character.
Bellerophon was also a good guy but he just became blinded by his success & fell to hubris.
I'm glad you highlighted him, Bellerophone was one of the heroes that always got his deeds attributed in another more popular hero like Theseus or Perseus...
Happy hour with Dionysus sounds pretty good😎
Dionysus would say "You're damn right. Happy hour does sound good."
Dionysus makes happy hour even happier.
I prefer happy hour with Jesus, cuz he can turn water into wine

"so buy the book... if you want to" and what follows, told with your usual deadpan tone, is hilarious ;)
Bellerophon sounds like he was a total bad ass until the end. I love these videos. They really help me absorb these Greek myths. Thanks!
Such a human hero compared to the others honestly. Really felt like a more realistic interpretation of human actions in this tale.
Love the skyrim music
i love how im not the only one who noticed
Yes same!
Yeah but he did not give credit for it

Do akin is son of Zeus.. Change my mind.. He is a hero that is enough evidence
This video is well appreciated. This past weekend my son and I started watching a series on Greek Mythology, we both love the stories. My grandson did not get interested until Bellerophon. We explained that most of the problems experienced by Greek heroes was their hubris, or arrogant pride, after winning a battle or two. He has a problem like this and the story was like a godsend for his parents who have tried to tame his natural tendency to crow and gloat. He watched the other tales (except Oedipus, we didn't feel that tale was appropriate at his age) so that he could see, great men accomplished great things, but then felt they were deserving of something more, entitled to more. It ended in misery for most. The lesson being, the higher you climb, the further your fall unless you are very careful and keep the memory from whence you came. He's having fun with the stories in your book. When he gets a little older I will introduce him to Edith Hamilton and Bulfinch.
What show is this? Is it on Netflix?
@@briarwolf0501 It was on Amazon Prime. I don't subscribe to Netflix. Sorry, I didn't elucidate.
His original name was Ἱππόνους(Hipponus), but one day when he went hunting with his brother Bellerus(Βέλλερος), he killed him by accident! That is why he was then called Bellerephonthes, which in Greek means "the killer of Bellerus"!
The reason, Rider from Fate/Stay Night has the golden bridle Bellerophon used, was because in all of Medusa's myths, she birthed Pegasus from her blood, which is also why she summons Pegasus via a magic seal by stabbing her throat.
Hades: Just how many kids you wants?
Poseidon, Zeus: Y E S!
He’s kinda like an underdog honestly.

You have the most amazing voice for this forum. It’s silky and smooth with such a great twisted sense of humor love it
Bought your new book yesterday, can't wait to tear into it this weekend! I've been enjoying your videos SO much the last few months, and can't wait to experience your more narrative approach to the Greek legends. I'll be sure to leave a review on Amazon. Thanks for all your hard work! Maybe we could see some more Yokai in the future, or Sumerian myth? Arthurian Legend? I look forward to what you have in store!
“You don’t know your limits until you push yourself”. Your closing statement of this video is exactly why I love your channel. Bravo 👏
Its ironic how in some adaption he lives and becomes a nobody, because he's forgotten right at this time, though is remembered by the very few. He's now literally a nobody. Almost makes the story historical in a sense.
Athena is surprisingly helpful to Poseidons kids. See that makes me think Athena isn't always so bad
Out of jealousy she cursed Medusa
Athena wasn't ever really that had to begin with
She only cursed medusa because her and Poseidon had sex in her altar
Yeah...
But it was poseidon who forced her......she only went to Athena's temple for help...but that's when he to advantage
@@simonacquahforson1760 jealousy of being raped?
In big fantasy film adaptations like Clash of the Titans, I noticed they will often combine story elements of Bellerophon/Theseus/Perseus & usually just go with Perseus as The Hero.
This myth has similar themes to Icarus flying too close to the sun. Hubris. Still a common theme in modern scifi/horror - don't play god or there's horrible consequences.
I noticed in many of the artistic depictions he was shown as being left handed. Is there any significance to this or just a coincidence?
Great video as always ♡
Everyone forgets who Bellerophon is until you mention the part about where he tried to use Pegasus to reach mount Olympus and then suddenly everyone remembers his story.
I just found you. Very nicely done , Bellerophon is one of my favorite myths (greek) .. You just gained a new subscriber.. Thank you for posting !
Just wanted to tell you how much I have enjoyed reading your book, Greek Mythology. I have always enjoyed your videos, but reading the hardcover book has been such a pleasure. It is so engaging it keeps me from putting it down. It is very well written and the stories selected are thoughtfully put together. I hope it is the first of many such series (Celtic, Egyptian, etc), if so, you might want to consider numbering them, i.e. Greek Mythology I, II, etc.). Great Job!
Wow! This is phenomenal. Thank you for your time and dedication. It truly is amazing.
I think green goblin said it best. "You know what people want more them a hero? To see a hero fall, fail, die trying."
Hey dude just got your book and I am loving it 👌👌

Oh, & book ordered. Happy reading coming my way.
I have never heard of Bellerophon but this story/legend is very interesting and fun. I’m glad I follow and learn from this channel
Congratulations and well put together. Your channel continues to impress, well narrated. Well done and thank you for all your videos. Remain blessed
You dont really here about the children of poseidon, its mainly the monsters that you hear about.
I guess percy jackson has given light to the obscure children of the gods.

Percy Jackson is not ancient Greek mythology it is a reimagining and loosely based story on Greek mythology

I mean it is Greek mythology , just a more modern version to fit it into our generation I guess you could say .
@@x3papichulo3x78 It is not Greek mythology at all. There is no percy in Greek mythology. Also, In percy Jackson, it is percy who is doing the work of all the heroes, be it killing medusa, or cyclops, or cronos, etc.

the moral of the fable of Bellerophon is don't triumph too early
Your edits are beautiful

So when I was a kid, I had these Disney-published books about various subjects, and one was mythology. This one really confused me, because the book said that Bellerophon had once been Perseus until he killed his brother. Maybe that was another version of the legend, or maybe that old book's writers needed to do better research.
Loved Bellerophon and thought of him when playing Dnd attacking a Chimaera.
I love this channel! 🦄🐂🐗🐎🐏🦁🐲
Thank you.
Bellerophon lands in hades*
Lucifer: "hello there"
Very good.
I love the ending to this video
So.. gotta say, I have to agree with your Poseidon premise. Particularly if Pegasus is the Celestial Representation of Bellerophontës.. since He is there aside Perseus and Andromeda, but I suspect that Andromeda might serve as a Twin Constellation for Bellerophontës, since it is just over Pegasus, the Pisces and Cetus(?).
Good call.
Now I'm gonna watch the video!
Blessings!
Can you do a video please on the Giants/Gigantomachy of Greek mythology!!!!
*wears helmet for boulders* I want to buy it but cannot afford to right now. Once I am in a more comfortable place financially I will for sure pick your book up. I’ve been so anxious to read it. Keep up the amazing content 👍🏻
I just read the part from the book and I have to say, it's really good. I wish a good filmmaker like Peter Jackson for an example, would make a film adaptation based on your version of Bellerophon.

Growing up I had a children's book about Bellerophon. I read it because I liked Pegasus. I had no idea he (Bellerophon) was kind of forgotten. 😶 I always thought it was a sad story but I read it many times.
Imma def buy your book love your work its inspires me before my boxing matches i never heard this story before I think you should do bible stories explained I would love to here your views on Samson and king David
I suspect that Bellorophon sounding more human is because he was a person who existed. He wrote a book in 400bc about horsemanship that can be still found today. I studied it at uni. I was unaware that he was thought of as a Greek hero or even God though! That's pretty interesting!
Do Jason and the argonauts next please
To me, tragic hero stories always seems to have
a pattern of someone who wants to live an adult
life, before he/she has reached the
emotional/intellectual/spiritual maturity of an adult.
A lot like arrested development(aka narcissism).
Someone who wants to be a true hero, instead
of a tragic hero, has to get rid of his/her
narcissism.
Look up "the fool" archetype
Same premise of The Odyssey. Odysseus was cursed by Poseidon due to his arrogance, and he was humbled for years, before his last task of getting his reign back
Bellerophon was the name of Rider's (Medea) Pegasus from the Fate visual novel/anime series
I beleive this hero showed up in Age of Mythology as one of the Greek Heroes you can build out of the town center, complete with Pegasus being ridden.
The reason zues took it as an insult is because he was a son of Poseidon and he was in Zeus domain
Mythology&Fiction Explained, i see you posted the link for the intro song. Which film/cd collection is it on? Love the song and trying find the full version
You need to do a vid about Achilles in the future
I second that!
Wish that a movie of Bellerophon would be made.
I've always thought that the reason Zues denied Bellerophon's entry but allowed the Pegasus was because, without Pegasus, Bellerophon wouldn't have had succeeded for so long. He welcomed the Pegasus because it was the real hero of the two, while Bellerophon considered all of his accomplishments made by his hands alone.
Moral: No "I" in team.
Does anybody know the name of the piano music used throughout this video? It’s beautiful
Do annunaki Next

Hey dude, I just want to ask you this important question. So, I don't believe in Myths, but the more I hear it the more I'm starting to feel interested in it. So, how would you define Mythology? Is Mythology historical? What does it teach? And what are some good books to start Mythology? Please respond, thanks.
SWLoreNerd55 well to answer, mythology is just a story- not necessarily always historical but it is a story, for example even the Christians have a mythology which could be interpreted as the Bible, or the leviathan. It can however be historical, but it doesn’t always mean it’s fully accurate. To answer the final question: there isn’t any really good place to begin as all mythology is different, and even the same stories have different bits and pieces so you can really start anywhere. A good base to start would be Greek mythology first. Oh and what does it teach?: it teaches generally wisdom or metaphorical answers so metaphorical questions.
I never think of Perseus riding Pegasus, because never remember if he did or not so I only remembered Bellerophon
This isn't for Bellerophon but rather for HMS Bellerophon (1786 version), better known in the Royal Navy as Billy Ruffian. She took part in many of the Great battles of the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic wars. Most famously perhaps the battle of Trafalgar where she fought a bitter and bloody contest against no few than four French ships of the line. Chalked on her cannons the immortal words Death or Victory of which it would turn out she would have both. Losing her Captain, many of her crew, her colours three times and capturing a French prize ship. However, more than anything she was a symbol of the Royal Navy at its finest. She would later have the honour of taking Napoleon to St Helena but also the ignominy of being made into a prison ship before finally being sold for scrap. And, in that, perhaps she ended up sharing the fate of Bellerophon Himself.
