  • When I was growing up I became fascinated by the mysterious and little known country of Albania on the southern edge of Europe. A land which at that time few outsiders had visited due to the paranoid Stalinist leader Enver Hoxha. Well things have changed now and the borders are open so I decided to head there and to see where state paranoia can lead...

If you'd like to explore the bunkers of Albania like I did then I can recommend the place I rented a scooter from in Vlore from where I began the adventure. Search @motorentvlora on insta for their shop. They might even give you the same scooter I used. Imagine that, sitting on the same seat where my sweaty bum cheeks have been. Cheers

I'm Albanian and I would have loved to guide you. I was raised up in Tirana but my parents are from Vlora. Basically all the people are saying that Enver Hoxha was bad and the times were poor af. The guy who offered you rakia said Maskara for him which means Bastard. If you hear PO on the video it means Yes. Shitet means is for sale bc everybody is looking to emigrate from that country. I myself emigrated 3 years ago in Germany where I'm currently living. I would have loved if you visited the Vlora beaches bc there are some Caribbean level beaches in there. The people are actually nice in there especially in the villages. They see the foreigners like Gods. At the family you visited the women is saying that she was 15 when Enver Hoxha died and she didn't have good feelings about him. The man is saying that the bunkers were build around 1970-80. You gave around 8 euros to the guy that trimmed your face hair which is the amount he makes in 2 days, I thank you very much for that. Normally you should have payed 80 cents I guess. He told you ''eshte vap'' which means is hot. I don't know where you heard that shuish loool but hot is 'vap'. The chilled old dudes at the park were saying that E.H worked only for himself not for the people, actually the people worked for him. Basically the whole Albania worked for enver hoxha. I missed so much my place. Haven't visited Albania in more than 1 year and I thank you very much for the tour. My hurt sunk when I heard my language on your channel. Big fan of you! everyone that has questions can ask me I'd be more than happy to answer ! and Goodbye in Albanian or SHQIP{the name of our language} is MIRUPAFSHIM

Some parts of Western Europe the age is higher (for example, in The Netherlands pretty much everyone except pensioners can speak English), but the general trend is that the younger they are the more likely they are to speak English. It's starting to happen in the Middle East as well, when I went to Beirut, everyone young could speak English - and it's the third language there, after Arabic and French.

Joris Nooren yeah, i know but that phrase is almost the same when spoken, i’m italian and i don’t have to study spanish to understand that “GRACIAS SEÑOR” is “GRAZIE SIGNORE” since spanish “CI” is pronounce almost like italian “ZI” and “Ñ” in italian is written as “GN”

When I was in the Army, there was a rejoiner who had served, essentially as a mercenary, in Albania. He said it was difficult training the Albanians, not because they were unskilled or unmotivated but because arguments tended to produce blood feuds. It sounded like the wild west. But apparently the wild west is also a beautiful place filled with wonderful people!
