Poatan's power and accuracy are insane. That hook is heavier than most heavy weights can throw
For anyone who's wondering the way Alex checks leg kicks is visible in his fights especially with Izzy. He essentially doesn't check them, Joe hints at it with the "can't be a tough guy" line.
Basically Alex just lifts up his leg that's getting kicked off the mat to meet the kick just like any other check would, but instead of trying to fight the kick, he just lets his leg go sort of limp and moves it with the force of the guys kick instead of against it while he's planted on his rear leg. It's pretty genius it's basically the concept of rolling with the punches and not moving into them but for leg kicks. He doesn't push back into the other guys leg and try to do damage to him by tensing up; he just lets the kick push and ride off of his lower leg so the force is dispersed and the connection isn't clean. Ultra smart and simple technique as long as you have the pliability and balance.

He makes the same movement everyone does when their leg is injured. But he does it before his leg is injured.
Seems reasonable. Even seemed like Strickland was doing this against Izzy and Dricus after training with Pieria.

I mean, he's far from being a good grappler for sure, but in the very short amount of time that he's been training/learning how to grapple in mma - he's improved immensely from where he was just starting out. Now imagine instead of kick-boxing - he had just started training for mma? That means at this moment he would have had 3 to 4 times as many years of training/learning and mma fighting than what he's had, he'd be a phenomenal grappler by now, or at least a phenomenal defensive grappler!

It's not a secret lol. Videos have been out for months showing Alex's new checks. He uses the non-targeted heel to swat the kick away right before it makes impact. It's sick. Strickland picked it up after training with him and even used it in the DDP fight.

I could be wrong but I think what Joe is saying about the leg kicks is that when Alex sees someone about to throw a leg kick, he does this thing were he moves his left foot into the inside left of his other leg and drops the knee.

Alex just let’s the bottom portion of his front leg go loose and bend like a hing when he takes a leg kick. It allows the force to roll through his shin instead of vibrating it while it has weight on it. Also similar how he rolls with punches when his hands are down. Very basic technique to understand if you watch his sparring . Also allows him to jab off the lead leg check
Imagine how many times Pereira, as a teen, was chased by the town’s people with torches… of course it builds strategy and toughness!

The way he checks leg kicks, you can see it in the izzy fight. Izzy kicks his leg but Izzy’s leg is the one to give out. Shit was weird, he also took a shit load of calf kicks but idk, the was he just dropped after clashing shins with pereira was weird.
Nah mane he's talking about the one where he uses his other leg to check the kick targeting the lead leg. The heel blocks it. It's very cool looking but also leaves room for concern due to the vulnerability he puts himself in immediately after. There's videos of it everywhere. Surprised no one has mentioned it.

Not wrong but another side to the technique is that he does a small little crouch when kicking. The glutes press down with a mini momentum hit try it on the bag when you do a kick you will notice the difference

I just rewatched that fight, Jan really blew it by not landing meaningful takedowns after the first round and getting pieced up badly on the feet. Had a bad draw before that the guy just doesn’t have a high IQ in the cage
