I came to New Zealand 50 years ago, I knew nothing of its history, it’s indigenous people, way of life etc. And despite having some heartaches, I have had more fulfilling times, and I am very grateful to have made Aotearoa/ New Zealand my home.

Welcome. It will be well into winter here in august, not cold enough for any snow in Tauranga, but it’s the rainy season instead. Most of north island (away from the mountains) winter means rain. Snow further down south. As the year gets along, the weather improves, so it’s summer in late December, really mid jan nowadays as seasons seem to be getting later. Tauranga is a bit weird as it’s really two parts. The small Tauranga centre and suburbs and the Mount, about 10mins drive away, cafes and beach area.

@@runforrestrun1965 I'm very excited- but also bummed - getting back shipping quotes today, the cost to move our stuff is pretty high so I'm having looking at having to leave a lot behind... I know it's silly b/c it's just dumb 'stuff' but it's things I can't really replace- regardless, I'm thrilled. North Island was top on my list for world destinations b/c I'm trying to forever avoid snow for the rest of my life! - also, we live in new orleans, weird is in our middle name (weather, people, culture, food, nature...you name it)

Welcome to NZ Cherelle, very sorry about the weather I promise it is not normally this bad. I hope you are settling into your new job and making friends. I enjoyed hearing your story and appreciate your realistic attitude towards moving countries, I think much is made of the cost of living in NZ, people forget to factor in that this is happening in every other similar country as well, it is a symptom of the pandemic, you can't shut down production for nearly two years across the whole world without having negative economic consequences, as previous generations have done before us we just need to accept how things are and work hard to get back to prosperity again. As I am sure you are aware we are desperately short of health workers here in general, and midwives in particular so thank you for choosing to come here. I hope you do let us know how you are getting on some time in the future.

It’s called homesickness lol! It’s an odd feeling, I think that the fear, adrenaline, the excitement and apprehension, is all over and you are here and it’s like now what? Your not busy and you feel like your in a parallel universe. Good on you for feeling the fear and doing it anyway, I read that book years ago and you really do have to get on the court and play the game of life! Without playing the game and getting on the court, you are only but a spectator in life. It’s easy to sit back and watch life and be in a safe space, that’s not living, we get one chance at this life and you are still young and have no ties. Good on you for having goals and setting yourself a path towards achieving them. If you never came you would always have that voice in the back of your mind what if I had of done that trip? Live life, enjoy yourself, you will be fine, you have a very appealing and lovely nature and you will make loads of friends here. It maybe more expensive to live here but the benefits are worth it. There are loads for free things to do at your fingertips here! I really hope everything works out well for you, your adorable :) xx

Welcome to NZ Cherelle. We certainly need more health workers. Hope you settle in quickly and enjoy your life here. As Liz said, you are very brave moving to the other side of the world alone. Hi Liz, I always love watching these chats with your guests who have decided to try out life in NZ.. Interesting to hear their thoughts and the processes they've been through to get here. 🙂

Charelke looks like a lovely lady and hope all goes well here for her. Talking about a Brit living here in NZ. Just wondering how the difference is between here and there with racism? No one really talks about it. I know racism is quite prevalent in the UK & of course there's some here to but saying that, I don't really notice to much of it here. I'm not dumb, I know it's here but wonder where is it worse?

    • @robert3987

    • @robert3987

Every country has racism. Go to Britain and you'll find the Indians and Pakistani people don't like each other and wage riots against each other.
