  • Jeep Wrangler JK's going through a grade 5 obstacle at Moegatle.
    Jeeps & mods (to best of my knowledge) in order of appearance:
    JK Unlimited Rubicon Auto - stock
    JK Unlimited Rubicon Auto - 3" Zone Lift w/ BFG MT 285/70
    JK Unlimited Sahara CRD Manual - 3" Old Man Emu HD Lift w/ BFG AT 285/70
    JK Sahara Auto - 3" Old Man Emu HD Lift w/ BFG AT 285/70
    JK Unlimited Sahara Hemi 6.4L Auto - 4" Lift w/ BFG MT 35/12.50, Air Lockers
    Apologies for clip ending abruptly. Used a trial version dvd ripper and could only get 5 mins of footage from the dvd.
    I must add the last JK did make it through after locking both Air Lockers.
    The 2nd last JK eventually went around after sustaining damages to the front axle.

    I'm glad I found this for when people ask me why I paid the extra for my Rubicon. Lockers, disconnects a low crawl ratio and a skilled driver make all the difference.

    this panned out exactly how i would expect. just from looking at the obstacle, very unlikely to get up without lockers.

      That's quite a simple obstacle with the right tyres. I would have kept my foot steady and wait for traction control to kick in. I've been through worst in my Sahara and always get through.

    LOL, you could see that guy with the snorkel was pissed as hell that his Jeep couldn't make it up the obstacle and was willing to risk destroying his vehicle to do so.

    1) These are not all stock JEEP, and vary in year's designs. 2)This is clearly operator error; Anyone who's "crawled", or even been trained in traversing such terrain in accredited courses will recognize that immediately.

    Guy in the 2 door is all throttle no brains lol. Second 4 just need to stay on gas steady. The BLD needs some slippage before it can work effectively and you kept letting off as soon as it grabbed. Keep on having fun though!

    CRD has high low end torque and turbo lag is not an issue there, looks more like the driver is a bit to conservative with the skinny pedal.
    Crossed over situation where lockers of the rubicon will shine but I think that the open diff with brake assist traction control of non rubi JK's would make it as well with proper tires, tire pressure and some balls to push it a little ( not as much as the two door though :) )

    @Rohirn i'm not any kind of expert, but i hear that the automatic transmission is much better for crawling, as you don't have to worry about stalling out. But i'm sure either is just fine

    yes my friend.JK rubicon has all the refered advantages ,so i do beleive that`s a jeep for off roading addicts. but i meant that if the failed and good driver with sahara crd manual had auto transmission MAYBE could make this, after rubicon jk could show its worth to numerous and more difficult cases. by the way in greece jk rubicon 4 doors costs about 25000 dollars more than my liberty kk and unlimited sahara. That`s about it !!

    It's a CRD. Huge turbo-lag. It's hard to crawl with that turbo lag. There's either no power or tons of it. Now add a manual tranny in the mix and it gets tough.
    His choices were go slow and stall or hit the gas and possibly damage the vehicle.

      Turbo diesel and automatic transmision is a bad combo for off road. I had WJ CRD automatic and everything is OK when you got momentum but once you stop in tricky situation there are good chances to stay there. I also have XJ turbo diesel with manual transmission and even with open difs and less torque it's much better...

    @NemeanLion Having a snorkel reduces your horsepower by 10-20%. It's one of the worst mod he can do to the underpowered JKU.

      6886miki And Axle ratio, edisco, and lockers. I've owned both. Stock vs stock the Rubicon is much easier offroad especially on inclines.

      +Brawndo totally agree, i have drivin a stock jeep jk 2013 sahara for many miles (manual 3.21 axles)

    unfortunately in greece sahara 4 doors costs about $60000 my kk liberty $55000 and to buy a rubicon must sell almost a house :$80000- $85000 . Nowadays all diesel editions, after petrol costs about 2.2 dollars per liter.

    well it looked to me that that stock rubi was having more problems...orange/red went up the first hill easier and the silver one, the one that said rubicon on the side had a more difficult time...

    which is better for off roading manual or auto transmission real question i am thinking of getting a brand new rubicon soon and i an a total noob at off roading i know i want to do it though still thinking about a grand cherokee though

    It's not that bad... when they dyno it with the snorkel, you have no air going into it like you would going down the road... there still is a slight loss compared to a standard CAI.. but the loss they show on the dyno isnt 100% accurate.

    Go manual. Way more fun and power. A rubicon has a 4:1 transfer case too. Pretty damn hard to stall out.

    Proof it's about the driver and not the mods. Stock Ruby ran through it no problem. The guy who kept stalling seemed more like a rookie. The guy in the red jeep was a tool. The people there should have educated him.

    the brake system sucks. it still acts like open dif and feel almost no help from the brakes. lockers on the other hand, just need to bypass the transmision with a switch and i can use them in 4hi

    The sahara's just have stock tires, theeses one are bullshit to go off roading, put good tires and it will climb well...

    Ok any trail rider can see you need at least 1 diff lock to get up that, or you could tear something up trying...

    my belief is that rubicon is the best as it has locked differentials. but to overleap this obstacle needs driving skills who failed driver hasn`t. this opinion comes from my belief that vid is real not trying to raise false ideas!! i`m an owner of jeep kk with select trac 2 system and i think the failed wrangler could go better!! thanks and greetings from greece

      How so? I purchased a 15' JK "Freedom" (New). It had the higher rated stock springs ironically; Then I installed Bilstein shocks, sleeved the Dana 30 front axle, swapped to 4.56 gears, w/locking differential (simultaneously), and programmed a DiabloSport tune & ECU....... All for less than the price of a Rubi off the lot.(?)

    I do better then both of them with my almost stock 2001 TJ (31" mud tires deflated to 20 psi, sway bars disconect front and back removed, 1.75 budget lift in front, stock (Rubicon 2006) coils and shocks, 1' body lift an.d skills... No lockers in front and limited slip in back Dana 30-35 differentials
