- Today we had a used Jeep Wrangler JK in the shop. A Dad just bought one for his son and needed a few things added. It got me thinking that I needed to do a buyer's guide for the used wrangler JK model. SO here it is. Hope this helps out.

Step #1-Get rid of angry face grill. 😂
No get a angry grill first, stock looks horrible
Darth Jeeper is not a good look.
Correct
Yep, #1 mod
I like em
Don't trust a used one with an angry grille.
😂
@@Exodus4x4 Great video Mate!
I'm new, what do people do when they angry grill
@@SRC503 grill looks like angry birds. It's a lame mod, don't do it.
The angry grills are actually usually a pretty good indicator on a lot of levels without having to open anything up:
You know the gear ratio: stock
You know it’s not been off-road (much) 🤣
Unfortunately, oil changes where probably long
2010 Wrangler with 340 000km. Biggest issue was real axle seal leak. Runs great
Egr valve never failed ?
Original engine and transmission?
Just bought a 2011 sport 2 door with 60,000 miles and it is mechanically sound. Well taken care of and clean!
Took me 6 months of searching before realize better off buy stock.
All lifted and cool aftermarket modifications has been drove hard and all of them has low mileage with hidden problems for a reasons and lots of them has salvage titles.
Finally found one of what I wanted. Going to build this up slowly with my types.
I have a 2012 jk with 256000 miles, just starting to poop out on me. 4.5 in lift with 37s since new . Basically just rear seal leaks every 50,000 or so . heater has been a problem but other than normal stuff like a starter or two ,ball joints once. The usual. I have been happy with it overall.plus I have done things with this jeep you could not do with any other vehicle. Get one. It is what it is.
Thanks a no BS review. I have the 2008 love it, the engine is easy to work one.
Is it reliable?

Toyota FJ guy here, not in the market for a jeep but I find them neat, nice learning about other vehicles
Just bought a 2010 JK unlimited sport and love it!
how’s it been so far
@@wavegod9387 Put about 10k miles on it at this point and no issues.
Hows it held up 3 years later? I'm about to dive in and buy one myself.
Just so you know the Unlimited part is four doors a JK has two doors jku has four doors. Unlimited means four doors. I say this because I want you to know what you're talking about when you talk to people. Every jku owner tells me they have four doors. Usually like this. I have a jku unlimited four-door literally told me three times in one sentence they have a four-door. JK means two door jku means four door. There is no such thing as a JK 2-door Unlimited all the unlimited are four doors. Enjoy your Jeep. I have an 07 JK it's fabulous✌❤😆
@@crazyfoot490 Yes, the U stands for unlimited, so JKU or JK Unlimited are the same thing. This is my fourth Jeep btw. I'm not new.
2010 2 Door JK 300,000 miles
2018 4 Door JK still going strong 100k
Very informative video, great job.
Yes that ticking noise is something that all JK owners should be aware of, get it fixed sooner and don't wait until your camshaft wears out. and it's not just the JK but all Chrysler vehicles with that 3.6 Pentastar engine, I've heard Caravans/Rams tick as well.
Glad I watched this video because my wife's Jeep makes that noise.
just picked up a 2012 two door sport manual. Only thing they did was wheels and some 295s... I cant wait to get into the build!!
Have an 07 2 door myself. Its currently going through major upgrades. I was basically considering getting something else but with all of the garbage that has come out over the last few years and the fact that when I drive my jeep its just different. I mean it just feels different. I just could not part with it. So its getting the cost of a new jeep worth of upgrades . And if your wondering. I do wheel it. It is in no way some big rimed mall crawler.
I have an 2011 3.8 but newer interior had it for a few years now just clicked over 100k love it!
How is it? Still good? I’m looking at one myself
I think its hilarious how people on jeep Facebook pages call the 3.8 junk, yeah its gutless but reliability is what matters most. Id hate to be one of those jeepers who bought the 3.6 at a premium because someone mentioned horsepower, just to end up with a leaking oil cooler housing in the middle of a trail....
The thing with the 3.8 is you've GOT to replace the air intakes. K&N or the Banks intakes are good. Cheapest thing you can do to get more power out of those engines. There's a few other little things you can do that aren't expensive either.
Hi people. I have own so many jeeps .all my life I'm 60 years old today 2023 .an old man I now got me in to jeeps. Today I own a norther jeep the one your looking at is .a 2018 wrangler 4door jk unlimited in Canada 🇨🇦. There was only 18 white 18 black. 2 colors only. And it's number #2 out of 18 .and it was done at 11 am .and it's a golden eagle edition. I use them for show and shine. Me .I had all of them .
I accidentally bought a 2wd 4-door. The only recommendation I have is built for lightweight and gas mileage as a manual 2wd has the best gas milage you can get out of most models.
Depends on who owned it prior. 2013 was maintained with dealer oil changes still runs great at 100k.
Bubba - Great Spinal Tap reference, and SNL! My overland rig needs more cowbell. lmao
Great vid Bo.
As much as I miss my '06 Rubicon, I absoloutly love my '17 Recon.
You summed it up pretty good.
Also have a lifted '12 Sahara which to date has been great withthe exception of the biodegradable FCA wiring harness.
2017 Recons rock
John Q, what specifically do you miss about your 2006 Ruby?
I have that same thing going in with my ‘12. I have never anything this brittle - plus the wiring insulation that cracks everywhere.
08 jk here with 88k miles. No serious issues yet. Lowest trim package which I like because I like to mod my vehicle anyway so no point in paying for stuff you’ll get rid off.
Yep, and theres tons of them out there to pick up at a reasonable price to start modding. Enjoy that Jeep!
I'm from New Zealand, you stated that there is no such thing as a 1996 TJ. Well I'm here to tell you that there is.
Mine was made in Ohio sent to NZ and first registered here in NZ in November 1996.
One of the annoying things i have found with it is the mix of YJ and TJ parts in the engine bay and transmission.
I have to double check every time I order new parts, I was told that with the early TJ's that if they didn't have the proper TJ part available then they would throw on something from the YJ parts .
The other thing is mine is RHD whereas US Jeeps are LHD, I have to double check any part will also fit a RHD vehicle.
I bought a 2015 JK Freedom with 57,000 miles on it in July 22. I paid a premium price for it because it was a 1 owner locally owned stock from the factory. Leather interior Alpine sound system. It looked showroom new inside and out.
I was looking to replace a 1997 TJ 2.5L manual transmission that I’d given back to my son, who had given it to me 4 years earlier. My grandson and I had changed the exterior lights to LED’s, added some cube lights and a light bar, and ungraded the interior.
My son originally replaced the TJ with a 2019 JL that had been professionally customized. Unfortunately, it turned out to be a lemon. Mostly electrical problems that the dealer never could fix as well as a 4 wheel drive check engine light problem the dealer couldn’t seem to fix.
He sold the Jeep and bought a Toyota Tundra. Since my son was without a Jeep I gave the TJ back to him. I’ve had to replace a thermostat and gas cap in my JK. My grandson is a certified mechanic. He replaced all the exterior lights in my JK with LED’s with daytime running lights.
I very much enjoy my JK with the 3.6 engine.
man i could use a reference list to this video. so much good material. Great AAA video. would give a 10x thumbs up if possible.
My 2012 jk 3.6 in the shop getting a new driver side cylinder head with 40000 miles. Would be covered under warranty but mine has a damaged title and they will not cover it. The bad head also took out my catalytic converter. So a $3500 fix.
YES, to the tick, tick, tick sound. Just got off the phone with my mechanic. Upwards of $10,000 dollars in repairs needed. He said I was lucky to catch it early. (2014 2D Sport)
😂 thats more thrn its worth buy a new jeep wtf
Yea definitely trying to screw you lol
If you know what you're doing you just pull that valve cover off take the rocker off replace with new rocker and pushrod $150 fix 4hr in the driveway
I have Jeep jk 07 with 266,00 run strong i love Jeep!!!
2008 jku here just went over 221,000! Glad you hear yours is still a champ too!!
Great video man! Answered alot of questions I had... joined the jeep family last year around this time. We have an 08 with the 3.8 and the automatic. Has just over 221,000 miles. One minor leak, think its power steering.
How it running today?
@@SantosProd Just did an oil change yesterday and logged a mileage of 238,737 miles. It runs like a champ, and I've been nothing but happy with it.
@@zerolimitsoffroad6346 that's great i want to get one just afraid of money pit
@@SantosProd I was lucky and found a one owner. It was a cream puff when I got it... Awesome condition.
@@zerolimitsoffroad6346 would you have gotten a newer one if you could have or why the 08?
It’s crazy how I see a lot of people say that Jeep Wranglers aren’t reliable cars but then I also see a lot of people say that they are reliable cars… now idk if I should get one or not 😭
Thats EXACTLY what im seeing too. Just as many people saying they are terrible as there are saying that theyre the most reliable thing ever. Idk wtf to do. Haha
My 2010 JK with the rubicrawler 10:1 is pretty rad.
Wish the engine had more power and 1 or more extra gears but as my 2nd Jeep (76 CJ5 was my first) it is a nice Jeep
When the 2007 Unlimited Rubicon came out I just had to have one, traded in my 05 Rubicon for the new latest and greatest. Big mistake, 3.8 was a true gutless wonder. A gust of wind would have it jacking between 3rd and overdrive. Kept it 6 months and got rid of it. I didn't think much of the new 3.6 either. I've been back to LJ's and a TJ since then, until now. I just ordered a Gladiator Rubicon diesel. We'll see. If it does not work out I still have an 06 LJ and TJ Rubicons.
I think you're going to be extremely impressed with your choice. I love my JT, especially after the Hemi conversion. If the diesel doesn't have any issues, then I'm sure you'll enjoy that Gladiator just as much as I do.
Thanks Bubba, it's been a long and frustrating wait on Jeep to offer an adequate power plant. (I hope no issues). AFT!
Don’t forget the hatch back window was changed from 11 to 12 as well. Not a big deal until you bust the glass and try to put the wrong year of jk hatch back on. The hinges bolt right up but the glass is different.
I have an 08 hardtop on my 2012
My 2008 JKU with an automatic trans has 213k on it . I’ve been running 35’s on it for ever. It’s been one of the most reliable vehicles I’ve ever owned . Jeep has designed most Jeeps with just enough power to get around on the road but when your off road in 4lo the 3.8 does just fine . Keep up the cool videos and can we get a hemi gladiator update ?
Matt McDonough I agree 100% brother in 4lo my 2008 Rubicon feels like it has plenty of power.
Hellephant gladiator
Got an 08 with 221,000 on it. Never had an issue with power... then again, im never in a rush 😆
Any problems with it so far? Just bought a jk 2008 and am wondering what problems I might run into.
@@DXG_multimedia this post was a year ago and since then I added another 30k miles with no issues. However at 246k miles I did a 6.4 hemi swap ! And it’s amazing
Go ahead and budget for the oil filter/cooler housing that WILL 100% fail on the 3.6 Other than that, no issues on my 2015 JKUR with 100k miles.
They all have a slight "ticking" noise even in good condition so be careful what you listen for. You'll definitely know a bad "tick" a mile away...
Often time it’s the lifters. Had to get most replaced in my 2196 rubi recently and now rear Axel needs completely replaced. I’ll still keeper.
LOVE TO HAVE ONE..IN A STANDARD TRANSMISSION!❤DONT NEED SPEED..ITS A CONTROL THING!🤣
One thing I would add is that in 2017 and 2018, the jk could be had with a factory LED headlight option.
You mean JL
@@r.s.customz1502 nope it was JK. My 2017 JK has factory LED lights.
2010 JK 2DR 6spd with 124k miles and the only issue is a small upper pan gasket leak. Other than that, mechanically sound. I run 5.38s with some minor engine upgrades (no boost) and a cat delete. Runs and drives like a charm. I could never part with it.
EGR valve fails on the the 3.8 too.
I enjoyed the video. I’m considering early / high mileage 2 door JKs for weekend fun. This video makes it seem like that’s not a terrible idea.
I have a 2017 JK 4Door and love it with very few issues but ill be listening for the death tick for sure
The JK's are definitely a Jeep that will provide may years of enjoyment. Just keep an ear on that tick. Once it starts you'll want to get it fixed ASAP.
@@Exodus4x4 Read that a lot of the death tick issues were resolved after a revision to the cylinder head beginning with the 2014 models. Any accuracy to that? Currently shopping for a 4 door JK Sahara my wife has been wanting forever.
The 2016 75th anniversary edition came with a Dana 44 with limited slip.
Love the angry eyes. Let's the road know who's boss.
Nice review I have 09 jk x unlimited manual transmission. I regear 4 :88 and upgrade steering components and shocks 6 in lift and 2 in body lift. Upgrade ball joints and axles..running 37s your right not a speed demon but I get it driving almost like stock. Took some time to tweak alignment..upgrade clutch, it's nice to drive..I'm happy with it
About the same price as some TJs. 2007-11 12-18, gear ratio, rubicon vs other, axles. Pretty much all you need to know.
Beware of 3.21 gears. Regearing a must. BTW mileage did not hardly change with 4.56 up grade.
One of my regret when buying my JKU is that I didn't choose the tow package which comes with 3.73 gears... (non-rubicon)
@@jwhisky4128 Regearing is worth it.
This is a fantastic video. Thank you for your efforts.
I got an '18 JK sport S came with D44 rear with LSD, and break assist traction mimics a locker kinda, but mine came with the max tow package which upgraded my 5 spd AT tona W5A580 heavy duty transmission W/ cooler
and 3.73 makes running 35s easier and LED headlights and fogs. And power windows .
Have not had issues with the front dana 30 but I will be ditching it soon for proRock 44 trail leader
0:22 No Jeep is a Jeep unless it has the cowl dimple and most will not ever know how it got there :) 2012 CG JK 2D with about every racked up cracked up mod you can get. 92,000 and ZERO issues but I have replaced the majority of the suspension but it wasn't broke when I did. I was just pro active. If your gonna run 35's or bigger you either need to beef up the D30 or go with a D44. The D30 will last a while on 35's but after a while it will start falling apart. Especially if you off road hard. You can beef it up with something like the whole SteerSmarts setup. flip kit and track bar included. CV or Chromoly axles, trusses for the C and a HD drive shaft (front) but the ring and pinion will then be the weak link and if your gonna replace that as well along with lockers you might as well go with the 44 upgrade. the other thing I will add is if your gonna lift it. Buy a decent lift kit. Those cheaper ones will give you nothing but problems in the long run.
Well said👍👍
Thanks for this. Was looking for some info on Jeeps as I’m looking for my first one. This was exactly the info I was looking for.
The angry grille only looks good if you have a bunch of mods
No, just no.
Besides overpaying for my 09 rubicon 2dr I got lucky that it only had 29k on it. I'm at 53k now with no issues. Put a flowmaster super 10 on and i just have fun. Id like to test a pentistar 2dr though just to see the difference in power. I do hate the 4 speed on the highway though. It just constantly searches for gears.
I still have my yj from 1993 bought it brand new
JK is bigger than the previous model. The interior stuff, make more sense like the A/C vents.
Yes!! ❤ The Tommy Boy clips!!😂
My 2008 Rubicon blew up at 130k. Now bored over .020, Centerforce Clutch, Afe Bladerunner manifolds, TrailDash 2 (programmed for 87 octane) and a HikeIt throttle controller. Seems to have a little more pep.
I have a 2007 Sahara with a 3.8L and six-speed manual trans. I don't think it's any slower than most of the vehicles that i've owned, and I've had close to 15 different cars and trucks through the years...
My 2011 sport is awesome..still driving it
I've owned my TJ 4.0 for a few months now and love it. Planning on getting a JK 3.6 this year for more power.
