Why did I buy a Chevrolet C4 Corvette Z51 instead of a 2024 C8 Stingray?

  • This 1986 Corvette is very special to me and there is a big reason. Take a ride with me to get the details on how at the age of 17 years old I was about to buy myself a carbon copy of this C4 Corvette. Why did I buy a Chevrolet C4 Corvette Z51 instead of a 2024 C8 Stingray?

I too had a C4 in high school (1995). A few Kids called me "90210" because of "Steve" in the show who drove a vette to high school. I didn't care, I just loved cars and had the means to buy a lightly used corvette. I drove it for 18 months, put about 10K miles on the odometer and sold it for damn near what I bought it for. After that I went on to own some Formula 350 Third Gens with the same TPI 350 as the Vette and a few Fox Body Mustangs too. Now I'm 46 and I'm building muscle cars and engines. It never gets old.

My first car at 16 was an 89 Firebird Formula. I now own a 93 ZR-1 Corvette! The C4 gets so much hate, and its usually from people that have never driven one. They're a great car if you care about it being driver focused and raw visceral feel. Even for not being fast by today's standards, they're so much fun to pilot that you won't even care. Plus the high torque makes up for most of it.

Here is my story. I was always a Chevy guy from elementary school, when I was in high school I got a part time job after school in a local metal shop. My goal was to save money to purchase a Camaro Z28, this was one of my favorite cars but the ultimate dream car was the new C5 corvette. I would drool over this car. One day while at work our shop manager drove in on a new C5 corvette, man was I exited and all over that car. It was like looking at a brand new Ferrari but better to my eyes. I always told myself one day I will own one and be just like him. After a few years of working in this great company I decided to leave to a competitor company to better my knowledge in this field, after leaving for 12 years they the first company called me back and made me an offer to comeback at a facility manager. I accepted the job and soon after while driving home I seen a beautiful C5 with a sale sign. I stopped to look at the car and soon after made the purchase. I remember pulling up to work in my C5 and telling myself well I said one day and today is the day. I still have my C5 here. Not sure if I would ever sell it.

I love this video. I worked at Hardees and then Wendy's when I was 15-18 years old. The manager at Hardees had an Chevy IROC Z-28 with the louvers in the back window. I loved his car. I was never able to save enough to buy a car. My parents would NOT allow me to have a car because they were afraid that it would make their own car insurance go up while living at home with them. Only after I turned 18 and moved out of their house was I able to have a car. I appreciate that Joe was thrifty enough to be able to save his money, and not spend it on other things that kids waste money on. In 2004, at age 34 years old, I graduated Pharmacy School and became a Pharmacist. The 1st thing I bought was a 2000 Chevy Corvette, dark red from Hendrick Chevrolet in Charlotte, NC. The day I bought it, I went on I-85 and was doing 95mph. I was instantly pulled over by a NC Highway Trooper. When he pulled me over, I told him I had just bought it, just graduated. He gave me a warning and sent me on my way. Thank you, Trooper!! That was the best day in my life getting that Vette.

Joe, I have a very similar story. I am a bit order then you. I saved my money and when I turned 18 I walked into my local Chevrolet dealer and ordered my 73 Corvette. When it came in the sales guy called me and said come and get it. I paid the balance and drove off. It was one of the happiest days of my life. I remember that day like it was yesterday. I sold the car 3 years later because I was getting married and as my dad said, you need a practical car. 50 years later and 7 Corvettes later I ordered a 2023. The color I picked for my 73 was orange. Of course my 2023 is also orange. There is no comparison of course. The C8 Corvette matches the hype. It's the real deal. I think of my 73 Corvette often and wonder where it is today. I hope it's still burning gas. Enjoy reliving those memories when driving your 86 Corvette. As they say, your only young once. Cheers!!!

I mentioned in your other C4 video, my first Corvette was a red 1988 Z51 with the standard transmission. I got it in 2002. I loved that car. In 2004 I bought a 1991 ZR-1. It too was awesome. I went to a Cadillac CTS-V for 5 years, but I'm happy to say I'm back in a Corvette. A 2016 Z06, 3LZ convertible. I have loved them all, but there is a special place in my heart for that first red C4. Thanks for the video Joe. Glad you were able to get your car back! Oh by the way, when I turned 21 years old (yeah I got some years on you Joe) I bought a brand new 1988 Mustang GT. I kinda forgot about it, but it was hella fun too. I lowered it, removed the cat, installed a Carter 625 AFB electric choke carb on a Edelbrock Performer intake manifold, damn that woke that car up, cause it came with a 2 bbl carb.. Fun times, I drove that car trouble free for 93k miles.. and sold it in 1987.

I had a Barbie Corvette and big yellow Barbie camper. That was as close as it got. Somehow, my automobiles have always resembled the camper more than the Vette from station wagons to my Suburban. Also, first job was McDonald's in 1985. Anyone who worked at McDonald's can do anything in life! Definitely do more videos like this. As always, enjoy your amazing stories. Lessons from Dad are priceless. .

You've inspired me to get back to work on my 1987 c4! I've now completed almost everything on it 2 days later (It just needed a new tensioner pulley, brakes and an oil change) what a beast man! I can't wait to have it painted so I can have a badass ride this summer. Cheers!

Gosh I love car stories like yours, Joe! Especially since we grew up in the same era. Sadly those types of situations don’t really happen now-a-days. My most beloved car was my Sunburst Yellow 1972 Buick Skylark. I was 16 y/o, working at a retirement home, mowing lawns, shoveling snow and umpiring little league games. I scraped together every penny I could and found the Skylark in the local classified newspaper. It was a classic story of the original owner little old lady who had to sit on a pillow to see over the steering wheel! 76,000 original miles and completely stock. She wouldn’t let me test drive it so I had to go for a ride in the passenger seat while she drove 15mph around her neighborhood! 🤣 $2,500 later she was all mine! I too thought I was the man, especially once I started modifying it. It was a base 350 2 barrel with a black vinyl roof and hubcaps. I found original Buick ralley wheels, got a custom bent dual exhaust put on with Dynomax mufflers, found an original Buick 350 4 barrel manifold and carb, put a Sun Tach on the steering column and converted the column shift to a floor shifter. The icing on the cake was when my best friend and I installed a shift kit. I was chirping tires all over town! Those memories will forever be part of who I am and why I love cars so much. Related to your story, growing up my dad had a Mustang too, but not a classic in those days. He bought a 1982 Mustang GT (the original Fox body) off the showroom floor and modified it the entire time I was getting to driving age. Obviously that was a huge influence in my life too. Anyway, just thought I’d share my car story.

I guess I was kind of a nerd back in my high school days. When I was 17 and 18 in the early 80s, the car in my custody was a brown 6 cylinder 78 Ford Fairmont Futura coupe that could barely get out of its own way. But it got the job done, and it meant freedom. I frequently drove with both windows down listening to one of our Dallas-Fort Worth rock stations, either Q102, or "The Zoo" 98 KZEW (both long gone), and often 97.1 "The Eagle", which mixed in some "yacht rock" with Van Halen and Rick Springfield. I'd crank it up when "Freebird" or "Sweet Home Alabama" came on, same with "Just What I Needed" by The Cars, and "Ah! Leah!" by Donnie Iris. As for your 86, that looks great! And I dig the sound of the transmission. As for Fox Mustangs, at 24 I "almost bought" a brand new 88 GT 5 speed for the salesman's "offer" of $100 per month payments. 24 year old Me actually fell for it! 😂 But, of course the deal wasn't approved. And I think I saw the sales manager's shoe print on the rear of my salesman's khakis. I didn't buy new wheels that day. And that's good, because I had no business even attempting to do so, even thinking about it. I enjoyed the ride in your Vette from my swivel chair at home. 😊
