    I really dig the process behind the creation. I have a similar method built in for my own process that sometimes outsiders don't understand. That having to build it up and evolve it in my mind before deconstructing it for a project. I probably sketch less than I should, but I have to see the forest to sketch the acorn, per se.

    Really awesome...tutorial..perhpas theonly one i have found online the breaksdown the entire process of a pen and ink illustration fromnstart to finish..I loved your explanation of how you set up your tonal values for your wash...The only question I have is apprximately how many parts of water to parts of ink you use to create the various tonal washes for example ...say for the light gray wash what size cuo are you using and how many drops of water and drops of ink do you put in it..(ex: 6 dropswater to 1 drop ink..or whatever etc)..But I must compliment you again on a very valuable and thorough tutorial

    • @artprof
      @artprof  Před 4 lety

      Glad you enjoyed seeing the process beginning to end! I think the # of drops of water you put in really depends on the ink you are using; some inks are really strong, others are a lot more diluted. I think the important thing is that whatever you do in terms of ink quantity you do that it's relative to the mixtures to get a range of gradients. So if one cup has 6 drops, the next can have 4 drops, the next can have 2 drops. I almost always end up having to tweak the mixtures a bit, which is why it's good to test out your gradients on scrap paper first. -Prof Lieu

    Please can I tell me what brushes you use and another question, what is the pencil you use , how light or dark that is, I’ve watched other illustrators , they don’t rub out their pencil lines until they have applied the pen, why do you do that at that stage? What thickness of pen did you use for this drawing? I love your art work it’s beautiful. I’m so glad I found your channel I’m a qualified artist but have not used pen and ink for years , since my student days ! Excellent instruction! I’ve a few questions about your brushes. What is the flat brush you use to spread water over the paper? Is that a watercolor brush you are inking with? Does cutting the handle down help or is that for portability?

    • @artprof
      @artprof  Před 3 lety +1

      Thank you! The flat brush was my 1 inch stroke brush! It's a little expensive compared to other watercolor brushes, but I've had the same one for almost a decade and the angle makes it ideal to apply smooth coats. And I use watercolor brushes for inking, but I never use them for watercolor again - it's just easier for me to not worry about any potential color tainting left over from ink - I clean my brushes well, but there's always something it seems haha!
      And purely for portability! I had a pencil case that was perfect but just a little short, so I snapped the end of an old brush off :) -Alex Rowe, Teaching Artist

    This might sound like a stupid question, but I've noticed on CZcams that most people who do black-outlined ink drawings seem to draw in pencil, colour in and put the black line last on top. But you seem to be doing it the other way round. Is there a reason for this? Is there a right and a wrong way? (I've always drawn my black lines first...)

      I think as long as you're working with water non-soluble ink, you can apply these in any order you wish! :) - Mia, Art Prof Staff

    The docking of tails for sheep is actually kind of a modern thing. Back in the early colonial America period she would all have long shaggy tails.

    Why everybody is using the so poor Staedtler erasers, when there are erasers, that do much better job without damaging the paper at all? For Graphite, nothing beats Tombow Mono Plastic and for colored pencils, like oil/wax pencils chalk pencils etc, the Faber Castell 187120 is the best out there, Both are very soft,which means they don't ruin the tooth/surface of the paper and both, erase easier/faster and more, than any other out there, Staedler lacks both of these, it's harder and doesn't erase as good.
