John Prine was an amazing songwriter. He was called "your favorite songwriters favorite songwriter ". I was late to the parade but now realize Covid took an American Treasure from us.
Such an intense song of longing and regret. John Prine was able to evoke so much feeling with just a few words, the perfect turn of phrase. The reaction was similar to the one my Golden Retriever had.
John was one of our greatest American storytellers through his music. He is surely missed. 💔🎶
This song was first recorded in 1970-71. It appeared on his first album which was released in 71.

This was written by John Prine, but you're right that other people's covers are better known, especially Bonnie Raitt's.

An Angel From Montgomery was a real thing -- when a prisoner was on death row the governor could change the death sentence to life in prison. The warden would wait for the call from the governor right up to the last moment. If the call came through it was called an angel from Montgomery. I knew the song long before Bonnie Raitt ever sang it.
Now that’s a golden nugget right there. I never knew that! I hung with John and his band after a show in a hotel bar. Just myself, the couple I met outside the venue, and two young women. It was the Lost Dogs And Mixed Blessing tour. Bought him a couple of vodka tonics. He asked us if we saw the Howard Stern movie. He said it was a love story. I could go on. I should write an essay about that time in North Carolina. As I write this, I’m realizing how many outstanding live performances I witnessed during the short year l lived there. Link Wray, Patti Smith, John Hammond Jr, Leo Kotke, Johnny Winter…

Only found John Prine when I heard a tribute to him after he died from covid. Although he had survived throat cancer that restricted his voice he had a last great album called the tree of forgiveness I would strongly suggest you react to Sam Stone and Hello in there and later songs such as Summers end and the humerous In spite of ourselves with Iris dement.

Love, Bonnie Raitt, she is amazing, a true legend! Saying that, John Prine has been compared to Bob Dyian and goes down in history as one of the greatest singer/song writers, storytellers and American folk/rock legends of all time! (I think Bonnie would agree) Please check out his song "Sam Stone" as proof!
I think he wrote this song, I remember him singing it, he was mainly know for his song writing but way back when he had a large following of people who would watch him in concert every time he came to town to sing his own songs sam stone would be a great song of his to review God bless

That was a powerful song. I hadnt heard that one before. There are sevral i havnt heard of his but i really like everything i have heard. John Prine also wrote "Pardise" witch is a amazing song also. I'm guessing you have heard that one? Also he wrote "Sam Stone". If you havnt heard either one of those songs i strongly suggest you take a listen. Im sure you will like them. 👍
