  • On 26th May 2024, Sydney Metro's new Crows Nest Station had an open day providing a chance for the local community to look around it before the Metro's extension to Sydenham opens later this year. Since I was in the area, I decided to take a look at the station myself, and see how it will shape the next chapter in Sydney's rail development!
Join me as I explore the station in depth, and interview those involved with its design and construction, hoping to not only highlight the amazing architecture, but also the effort that went into it, and the transformational benefit it will achieve for the local community and wider network.
Fun facts about the station: • Crows Nest Station Con...
More than 82,000 tonnes of concrete poured - enough to fill more than 13 Olympic swimming pools
Low carbon concrete used, meaning 60% reduction in cement used in the concrete manufacturing process without impacting performance.
11,360 tonnes of steel reinforcement used for concrete structures such as floors, walls, columns, and lift shafts
167 concrete beams weighing up to 70 tonnes have been installed across the station
220 pre-cast brick facade panels installed around the station perimiter, with the largest panels weighing 13 tonnes and holding up to 1,400 bricks
126,000 bricks hand laid to achieve the unique exterior wall design
More than 17 kilometres of underground services installed within the station box and surrounding streets
4,000 of 9,845 hand cut pavers laid, covering 2,200 square metres of internal floor space - enough to cover more than 10 tennis courts
More than 6,101 tonnes of construction waste recycled
More than 75% of power sourced from renewable or green energy sources
90% Australian steel sourced with 75% of all steel used coming from recycled steel
Potable water consumption reduced by 6000 kilolitres

Apologies if the audio is a little hard to hear in some parts, I usually take a proper microphone with my when filming but it had been damaged in transit so had to use my phone's built-in microphone (which isn't as good)

😀Great clip. Really well presented. Must look at some of your clips from the 'Mother Country'. Two comments:
    - The Metro system is wheel chair accessible throughout. I think the platform accessible door signs just indicate where the foldable seats are located in the train for wheel chair parking space.
    - The upslope approaching stations and downslope on departure isn't really that new. Stations on the Sydney City Circle (mostly built in the 1920s) often feature it. If you watch some of the 'cab view' clips you can see it. Exceptions will be in places where the line climbs or descends due to the geography, such as the steep climb out (1 in 30 I think) from Wynyard station up to go across the Harbour Bridge.

Great video and welcome to Sydney.
Youll see very few people buying single use tickets these days (probably due to the price premium) and most people have auto top-up on Opal (which unlike the London system can be collected anywhere). Plus the ability(like London) to use any credit card.
Gates and overall system is similar yo London, as Cubic Corp is the primary provider on both.

On the weekend of the open day at the Martin Place Metro station , not only were the trains not running through this station , but the remainder of the line was closed as well. I discovered this when I attempted to catch the Metro train from Castle Hill station , however the replacement bus trip was interesting - especially the return trip over the Harbour Bridge through the apocalyptic weather scene on that stormy afternoon ! 😮

Oh that's strange, I took a ride on the operational part of the metro after filming this video and it seemed to be fine!

Nice to meet you at Chatswood metro, Do they stand on the right hand side in the UK? I thought it would be the same as the driving side.

Yep, if you go on the London Underground you'll find a bunch of signs on the escalators telling you to 'stand on the right' and if you were to stand on the left you could expect a lot of disgruntled tutting!
Anyway it was nice to meet you at Chatswood as well!

Nice video & very informative. I didn't know about the tracks rising up to stations, for example. Genius! Good luck with the model !

All Sydney public transport, including the Metro, uses only contactless card payment - either the Opal card, or, for example, a Visa card or Apple Pay on your phone - No tickets - no ticket slots.

You drive on the left, why don't you stand on the left 😭

I'm not sure to be honest, but it's always been that way!
