BMC Kaius Review | Faster Than Your Gravel Bike | Contender Bicycles

- The BMC Kaius gravel bike is all about going fast, contrary to most other gravel bikes. Much of that speed, features, and inspiration are drawn from the Teammachine SLR race road bike. In our review we show off what makes the Kaius so speedy, how it compares to other gravel bikes, and our ride review thoughts.
For a bike that pulls so many features from the Teammachine, the geometry
is still uniquely tuned for gravel and dirt roads. Long reach, a low bottom bracket, and shorter stems means the bike is stable across multiple types of terrains. This is no BMC Roadmachine folks; rather the Kaius is a gravel race bike all on its own.
In this video we feature the BMC Kaius 01 TWO (seen in blue) and Kaius 01 THREE (seen in orange). Kaius 01 TWO features a SRAM Force AXS 2x12 drivetrain and Zipp 303 S wheels. The Kaius 01 THREE nets a SRAM Rival AXS 2x12 drivetrain and CRD 400 carbon wheels.

Got one of the first Kaius 01 Twos. Best bike I've ever owned. It truly does it all.
Happy to hear it! Kaius is the bike a lot of people have been waiting for I believe, particularly for BMC fans.
Would you recommend this for someone looking for a bike to do Gravel rides of 3-4 hours and casual group road rides? Right now I’m torn between the Diverge Expert, Crux Expert, and the Checkpoint SL7. Kaius just hit my radar. Phenomenal review by the way.

Great review. This or a Crux… I have a RoadMachine for the road. Think I’d want a more aggressive gravel bike, like a drop bar MTB.
Do you ride long gravel, or more single track stuff? This bike is for open gravel. The crux has round tubes so better suited for single track kinda stuff where aero doesn’t matter.
Nice gravel bike
This is a great bike overview video, saw you guys did a video in the past on selecting a road bike based on geometry, could you do one on gravel geometry? I don't do any bike packing but race road, XC, gravel and CX and currently race gravel and CX on the same bike. I do also enjoy riding on the road with my gravel bike to single track trails systems and riding intermediate level trails (with drops etc) with my gravel bike. I think at present my all-rounder gravel bike is likely not great for CX or single track riding and was considering getting rid of it and perhaps getting 2 gravel bikes, one that is going to do better at CX racing and one that is better for single track. I understand those are kind of opposite ends of the spectrum where I would want a shorter wheelbase, steeper head angle and shorter chain stays for CX and the opposite for riding a gravel bike in the single track (bigger tire clearance, longer wheel base, slacker head angle and longer chain stays) would you be able to make a video going through the spectrum of gravel geometry to make it easier to evaluate a few bikes to determine which may be better for singletrack and which may be better for CX? Then what good gravel race geo would look like for racing on Grade 3-4 gravel? Perhaps the CX biased bike would be good for gravel racing or maybe the singletrack biased bike could be is the all-rounder geometry the best for gravel racing?

Both are great options, I would recommend you try to ride each one and see which one you like. You will not be able to go wrong with either.
Hi and thanks for the comprehensive review. One question, from your experience would you recommend this bike for « heavy » jigs, I mean over 90kgs driver in M size ?
I think the Kaius will work just fine; the estimated max rider weight according to BMC is 120 kg. Let us know if you have any other questions!
Nice review, will it take regular stem? Like suspension stem or new canyon one unit stem/bar combo
The canyon one-piece bar combo only works on 2021+ Canyon bike steer tubes, the bottom of the bar actually goes into the frame and connects to the steer tube. However, BMC makes once pice bars and suspension stems that will fit this bike!
I wish they sold just a frame set. The white one is beautiful.
We honestly do too, fingers crossed that when they get this bike more settled they will start doing it.
Can we mount a 30mm wheel on it? is it recommended if we want to have a 100% race bike?
You can ride this bike with a 30mm. It won't be quite as good as a true race road bike, but it will still be really capable and fast as a race bike.
what would you reccommend as a gravel touring bike?
I would recommend the Pinarello Granger X, the Open Wide, or the Jamis Renegade for a touring bike.
Which model in the BMC families has a more comfort and relaxed position?
BMC has two gravel models, their aggressive race Kaius, and the more relaxed, adventure focused URS

When you say power meter ready does that mean it has a power meter already?
hey, this is Isaac from the video, and no it doesn’t have a power meter, but because it has an 8 bolt crank spider interface, you can just put one on without changing cranks or chainrings like a lot of of bikes will require you too

I would recommend a 51 or 54. 51 if you want a more agile bike, or 54 if you want something a little more stable.

confused millimetres and centimetres a couple of times, which would result in a massively long bike! (Chain stay length and trail, probably others)
