- Guilty, occasionally, of overreaching, but packed with mysteries and thrills.

I'm almost finished with The Shadow of the Wind after reading The Angel's Game and I'm surprise so many people like the the first one better. The Angels Game was so much better imo
Shadow of the wind is a masterpiece!
I have been reading my way through the series and am about half way through the last book right now. I read the first two when they were released, and loved them! We lost a wonderful writer.
Thank you for sharing with us your views on The Tetralogy of the Cemetery of Forgotten Books by this most formidable of writers. Shadow of the Wind sent me into another realm which I did not want to leave…The Angel’s Game you described perfectly and I loved it, the Labrinth of the Spirit I struggled with for the reasons you have mentioned, but I could not but shed a tear for the end not only of a series of unforgettable books but the end of a journey for one of my most loved writers.
Brilliant review as always. Detailed and informative.
I love your Videos! It’s such a refreshing change to listen to a booktuber who is actually well read.
Loved the Labyrinth! As I did the others.
I am in the middle of the second attempt of reading “The Labirint of Spirits” - I often feel that this book could have been with 300-400 pages shorter. Somehow I feel that this volume can’t manage to bring the same atmosphere as the rest of the series. If the first 3 volumes were some real page turnovers (and I really loved them, read them twice), this last one is definitively more like “omg, this is a never ending chapter”.
Thank you so much for this video! I felt so guilty for struggling so hard with this last book 🥺
Glad I'm not the only one feeling that way about Labyrinth!
Sucks to hear about Carlos Ruíz Zafón's passing, Shadow of the wind was a very important book for me in highschool
Indeed, a tragedy.
Hey! What would you say what was the idea behind the prisoner of heaven(like what was the message of the book, what author wanted to "show us")? Im doing a research and your answer would really help!
I got these books before of your review of the first. I'll get back to you about them once I'm done in two years or so!
Started a re-read of The Angel's game last night (I've read it first, back some 3 years ago, and finished The Labyrinth in the week between 2022 and 2023), I agree mostly with what is stated about those two books respectfully. In a sense, many aspects of Labyrinth felt unnecessary and drafty, as if it could've used a few more revisions and cuts. Angel's was my favourite, because of the genre flert with magical realism, and how it was later addressed in The Prisoner. Still, I very much like this composition of the quartet where each novel has potential to be read and understood as a standalone. Probably my most controversial opinion is that I found The Shadow the weakest. Not literary, but as a story - it didn't grab me into it like the other three for some reason. I am glad I didn't read it first, but rather took a chronological approach to the plot. The City of Mist, a companion to the quartet... Man, I am not sure where to start, what to say and how to end. Definitely deserves a place, nice trivia and info dumps in some of the stories, nice extra layer of Zafón's Barcelona in the others, but overall, I am not sure where I stand regarding it.
Thanks for doing this video
I definitely am one of those people who gets frustrated by the Angels game. I am 60 pages till the end and I am so confused right now that I actually began to doubt my intellect because it is not normal to read to the end of an almost 600 page book and then understand that you understood nothing ..... I will try to make to the end somehow but I AM frustrated. It is one thing to leave untied ends but to me nothing makes sense right now.
Overdose of Fermin, I like that. I have no problem with Fermin.
Havent read Labyrinth ofSpirits yet
Enjoyed Shadow of the Wind very much: one of my best reading experiences ever. I read it in an airplane back home from Barcelona, that definitely played its part in enjoying it.
If Angels game wasnt written by the author of the Shadow of the Wind, I would not even read it to the end because it just got so confusing by the second half, definitely the last quarter.
i loved the books so much but it took them so long to translated to english i absolutely forget the charchaters , stories and evants of what happened in the last books sadly i will not read the the last one , as always great review
Now that you have reviewed the entirety of this series in one video, any chance you will review all of The Book of the New Sun?
As soon as I read them, certainly! They're very high on my list ;)
Just finished the series and loved them all. What would you recommend that would be similar?
The classics that inspired this (Dumas, Laroux, Stevenson etc) are always great fun - in terms of more contemporary works, Umberto Eco's works are similarly stimulating and action-packed! I recommend starting with Numero Zero or The Prague Cemetery :)
"The Quincunx" by Charles Palliser..a brilliant Dickensian/Wilkie Collins style-mystery
Personally I didn't care much about the politics of these books since I found it hard to understand and I didn't want to do the research - so I kind of skipped that part of the series and focused more on the mysteries at hand. I'm almost halfway through labyrinth at the moment and I am enjoying it, curious to see what happens next although I think nothing, like no book ever, will top The Angels Game
Great review!I have read shadow of the wind and the angel's game. Both are among my favourite books of all time and both are so atmospherical.Just want to ask you , whether you know of any similar books?Any recommendations would be appreciated.Love your content.Keep up the good work.
I'd say that The Book Thief by Markus Zusak has a somewhat similar tone; The Prague Cemetery by Umberto Eco is a similar story of bookish intrigue, although a somewhat different book otherwise; and Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia has a similar atmosphere and a very intriguing plot. The Angel's Game in particular also reads a lot like the great Gothic mysteries (Phantom of the Opera, Jekyll & Hyde, etc)!
I never understood who saved David Martin that night that they were going to execute him. Is something I lost?
Seems like a hugely inconsistent writer, but I love the series. I was very surprised with how the later books kept up.
For anyone looking for more Carlos Ruiz zafon content, he composed sound tracks for the first two books
Really?! Do you know if they are available to buy somewhere?
@@Lucia-pd6fi the shadow of the wind soundtrack is on CZcams and everything used to be on his website. If it's not there anymore maybe using the wayback machine. The angels game compositions we're really great from what I remember.
Muchas gracias! Lo voy a buscar. Me hace ilusión escucharlo.
Andreas Corelli disliked this video. Just a joke.
Great review!
